You run as silently as it is possible to run through the woods. Leaves rustle and twigs snap, but you adjust your stride as you go, leaping over snarled roots and mossy stones and doing your best to stay quiet. You measure your breathing and try to be economic with your movements, aware that you have finite energy and every bit of it is precious to you in these critical moments of your life.
With the threat of death behind you, you're running too fast to stop when you leap over a tangle of bushes only to realize that they're growing along the crest of a steep ravine.
At last you break your silence with a sharp cry, your arms pinwheeling at your sides as you teeter on the brink...and then you slide down, head over heels, and fetch up hard against a boulder at the bottom.
Crack!
The pain is instantaneous and complete. For a moment, it's all you can focus on: the pain, and swallowing the sound of your tortured scream.
Drawing in a thin, unsteady breath, you reach for your calf, but you don't have to touch it to know that it's broken. The entire limb is on fire and you can't bring yourself to even lay your fingers against your leg.
You lie there in the bottom of the ravine for a moment, staring up through the canopy of trees at the sky, which suddenly seems farther away than it ever has.
Praying to whatever forces you believe in, you reach around to your pocket, feeling for the familiar rectangular lump of your cell phone, but you know it won't be there, and it isn't. You left it in your car.
Call for help. [[Go to Chapter 70.]]
Stay quiet, no matter how scared you are. The only person in these woods is Wes. If you're lucky, someone else will find you. [[Go to Chapter 72.]]
