The Bunny ruined our Hunt

I cannot believe that we are actually going on a proper hunt. I have been begging dad to take me out hunting for years now.

'I thought you would have grown out of it by now", I can still hear my mother saying only a week ago.

"No, that is so cool", I exclaimed.

My father, who was reading the paper at that time, not listening to a word we were saying, all of a sudden looked up with a big grin on his face. "Well, that is settled then. We are going on a hunt next weekend."

"Yes", I screamed, jumping up off my chair and almost toppling over the entire table. Thank god that did not happen, because mum would have probably killed me, as she had her good Sunday cutlery and plates on the table.

------------------------------------

Now it is exactly one week later and the weekend has finally arrived. It is a beautiful Saturday morning, when I come crashing down the stairs like a herd of elephants.

"Alright, alright. Calm down, Tom, or you will fall down those stairs and that will be the end of your trip", my mum shouts after me, when she sees me fly past her bedroom and down the stairs.

Dad is already waiting for me at the car. He has packed everything we need for a successful hunt.

"Good morning, Tom. Ready to go?" he smiles at me, when he catches me coming out of the front door with a big grin on my face.

My mum, who has followed me down the stairs, is now standing in the doorway in her nightdress.

"You two boys have fun and be careful okay", she waves goodbye, as we leave our driveway.

----------------------------------

Only fifteen minutes later, we reach the parking place at the far end of the forest.

We quickly get the binoculars, knives and rifles out of the trunk and head off into the woods.

We do not need to worry about people running around in this forest, as it is a hunting ground only visited by hunters.

My dad has been a hunter almost all his life. When he was fourteen, his dad took him hunting for the first time and he has been hunting ever since.

Now I am fourteen myself and finally old enough to go hunting with MY dad.

He had already taught me how to use a rifle in our back yard, where he would make me shoot cans. I hardly ever miss, so how hard can an animal be?

We crouch down behind a bush and only a few minutes later, a little brown, fluffy bunny comes by and starts nibbling on some grass only a few meters away from us.

"Go on son, now is your chance", dad tells me.

So, I point my rifle at the bunny, ready to fire. But I can't. Something inside of me stops me from pulling the trigger. It is as if my entire body has frozen rock solid. I cannot move a muscle.

'I can't shoot this cute little creature. It is so innocently eating some grass. And what if it has a family, kids maybe even. I can't just kill a parent. Parents are the people that should be cherished most in life, as they are there right from the start. I am 100% sure this bunny has a family. I can't kill it. And anyway, it is probably the sweetest creature I have ever seen. I mean, just look at this cute ball of fur!' the thoughts are circling my mind, giving me a terrible headache, but one thing is certain, I am not going to kill that sweet bunny.

"I can't do it dad", I lower the rifle and look at him. I can see the disappointment in his eyes. But he tries to hide it by putting his hand on my shoulder. "Don't worry about it, son. Not everybody is born a hunter."

"Yeah, I guess I don't like hunting after all!" I reply, laughing, as I was so excited all these years for something I clearly do not enjoy doing at all.

"Well, at least we got to spend some quality time together, ey Tom", dad answers, also laughing at my exclamation.

From that day on, I decide to never set foot in that forest again or ask dad to take me out hunting for that matter.
