Chapter 16: Infinite Misery• Nayla
Nayla stormed into her house in tears. No one was in the living room, but she could hear her dad in the kitchen. The train and the Uber ride back had been awkward as hell. Nayla was pissed at Anwar right now. She couldn't believe he had known about this, and how? She had scoffed at his claim that he just pieced it together.
Nayla balled her fists and marched into the kitchen where her dad was making pasta. His back was turned to her, so Nayla yelled for his attention. She needed answers. "Is the 'family friend' you're always talking about Madison's dad?" said Nayla accusingly, stomping her foot on the ground. She put her fingers up for air quotes when she said family friend for extra emphasis.
Her dad turned down the stove a couple of notches and stepped closer to her. He wiped her tears away and hugged her close, "Well," he began. "Mr. Brekker does have a daughter in your grade if that's what you're asking, I don't know her name off the top of my head."
"Why didn't you tell me!" demanded Nayla, pulling away from the hug. Her voice was shaky and her lips were trembling.
Her dad put his arm around her and lead her to the living room. "Sit down, angel."
Nayla sniffled to herself and took a seat.
"We didn't want you to feel like you owed her something." said her dad as he handed her a tissue. "Who told you this anyway? And why are you crying?"
"Is this why she's been bullying me for all these years?" Nayla cried. It was more to herself than to her dad, but he jumped up anyway.
"What? She's been bullying you? Why haven't you said anything? Who told you all this? Come back here!" called her dad as she went up to her room.
Nayla rolled her eyes, typical parent, oblivious and unhelpful. She didn't want to talk right now. She just needed a good Wattpad session.
Nayla flopped on her bed and was thankful that the rest of her siblings were at the hospital, she didn't want to deal with their questions. Nayla opened up Wattpad in a new tab and wiped her tears away. She took a breath. She was going to be fine.
Nayla clicked on her notifications and opened up her PMs. Her jaw dropped and a cold feeling of unease washed over her as she read the top notification. @madisonzavier PM'd her a message, "you're getting exposed bitch."
Nayla slammed her laptop shut. She tossed it on the other side of the bed retreated to the corner of the room. She crossed her legs and rocked back and forth.
There was a knock on the door, "Are you, ok angel?"
Nayla spoke through her trembling lips, "Y-yes, I'm fine."
"Ok, I'll be downstairs if you need anything." her dad said. She listened to his footsteps as he jogged down the stairs
In reality, Nayla wasn't fine. How had Madison even got her Wattpad? She let out a faint gasp, Anwar! The tears streamed down faster and harder than ever. How could he? Did he hang out with her just to give all that info to Madison? She had told him that her Wattpad was her personal sanctuary. Her family didn't even know about it. She even ranted about them sometimes. It was her safe place that she went to whenever she ran out of options. Now, Wattpad wasn't an option.
Nayla's face reddened. She could feel her veins popping out. She squeezed her eyes shut and rocked back and forth faster. "I'm not in any real danger," she whispered to herself. Her heart was beating on overdrive and her breathing quickened. She kept repeating the phrase over and over again till her heart rate calmed down.
Wattpad had always been such a sacred place to her, she felt like she was being invaded from all sides. What was happening? She took a couple of breaths. She needed to figure out what to do. What would her Wattpad friends advise her to do? Expose and drag her she thought.
Nayla got up determined to get back at Madison. She wasn't going to let her get away with this. Was she really bullying her all these years because of her parents? Taking her anger out on her? It wasn't her fault that their parents had a history. Nayla picked up her phone with her trembling hands. She couldn't believe Anwar had betrayed her and Madison would swoop so low, but two could play at that game.
