Chapter 15: Explanation• Madison

Madison glared at Nayla. Was she freaking stalking her?

"Get the hell out!" she said. She clenched her fist and pointed at her angrily, "it's bad enough you told everyone about my dad. And now you come here to taunt me?!"

Nayla took a step back, "You-your dad?" she stuttered.

"Don't act like you don't know." said Madison through her tears, "what are you doing here? And what are you doing here?" she said, advancing on Anwar.

He had his hands on his head and was looking from Nayla to Madison and back again.

"D-did you know ab-about this?" Nayla asked Anwar.

"I..." started Anwar.

"Shut up! Both of you. Get out! Now!" Madison said pointing towards the entrance. She stormed back into the visiting room and slammed the door behind her.

She took a breath and marched towards her dad regaining her composure. "Nayla Abdullahi. Who is she to you?" Madison demanded.

Her dad smiled at her sympathetically. "Hi Madison, back so soon?"

Madison slammed the table. "Don't play mind games with me mother fucker." Her voice grew dangerously quiet, "who is she to you. Don't make me ask again."

Her dad sat back a little. "Ah yes, the Abdullahi family. How are they doing? Is Nayla here to see me?"

"No!" said Madison. Her voice cracked a little and tears slipped through her tough act. "She's out there ruining my life with my boyfriend. Don't freaking tell me that that's the family you helped that got you into this dump."

"Ah, but I think you already knew that Maddy." said her dad. His voice was level and he didn't seem to mind her going crazy. "From what I know so far it seems like you're the one that's ruining her life."

"W-what? Why would you say that?" Madison asked taking a step back.

"Because I saw you yell at her earlier and can see her crying through the window. It is double-sided you know," said her dad, pointing towards a crying Nayla and a freaked out Anwar.

"Shut up!" said Madison. She started pacing the room. Good thing this was a one on one visit. She couldn't handle keeping up a decent composure for any onlookers, besides the guard, he didn't bother her that much. "Stop talking like my stupid therapist." She growled in frustration as the hot tears streamed down her face.

"Ms. Brian isn't stupid." said her dad, throwing his hands up. "She's rated one of the best therapists in America. She has 5 stars on Yelp for God's sake."

"Shut up!" said Madison, banging the table again. Her eyes were bloodshot and her lips were chapped. She knew she looked crazy, but at this point, she didn't care anymore.

"You ruined my life. You ruined my life. You-," Madison cut herself off and broke into tears.

Her dad stood up to embrace her.

"Hey, no touching." said the guard, pulling out his weapon.

Madison's dad put his hands up and sat back down.

"Sweetie, there are a lot of things you don't understand."

"Then make me understand." Madison choked out through her sobs. "Why would you help their stupid family?"

Her dad took a breath and looked at her. She struggled to meet his gaze. She could see the pain in his eyes. "Because I was just like them once. Broke, helpless, foreign, and in need of support. And above all that they had a child. A child in need of medical assistance, a place to stay, and financial stability. Everything I had they needed 10 times more. We were well off. Three beautiful healthy children. Privileged, and you didn't even know it. They fled a civil war. They've faced struggles you can't even begin to comprehend and when they got here, to the so-called 'land of the free', America turned its back on them. We looked at them as terrorists. Mocked them. Told them to go back to their country. Denied them aid that they so desperately asked for. They deserve to be here as much as we do. And while you sit here crying blaming me for ruining your life, they're out there thanking me for saving theirs. I'm sorry I hurt you, but I wouldn't have done it any other way."
