Chapter 13: The Visit• Madison
Madison walked into the visiting room. She didn't want to be here, at all, yet here she was forced to be on her Aunt's stupid agenda.
She sat in front of her so-called dad and cringed as they exchanged pleasantries. "Hello, John." She said in a cold tone. She wasn't having a good week and she didn't want to be here any longer than she had to. He was such a disappointment to her. She had looked up to him so much when she was a kid, and now he was just some loser in prison.
"Hey Maddy," he said brightly.
"It's Madison," replied Madison in a bitter tone. "I don't go by that anymore."
"It's been a long time!" he said, ignoring her attitude. "I'm glad you came to see me! How's mom doing? And the twins?"
Madison glanced at him. His brown hair was ruffled, and his jumpsuit wasn't properly fitted.
"To set the record straight, I was forced to come here," said Madison. "Aunt Brooklyn is waiting outside. Madison pointed toward the gigantic window in the visiting room where Aunt Brooklyn stood on the other side using her phone.
He nodded and drummed his fingers on the table waiting for her to answer the rest of his questions.
"Moms a drunk and the twins are imbeciles, per usual." she scoffed. "Everything fell apart when you decided to get yourself locked up, but I'm finally taking control of my life." She sat up straighter as she said the last part.
"Hey, hey," said John, while waving his finger at her. "Watch your mouth little lady. I'm still your old man. I didn't decide to get myself locked up you know."
Madison nodded along. "Yeah, you just so happen to have accidentally committed tax fraud for some stupid immigrants."
"Hey! They're people just like you and were being treated unfairly. There are a lot of things you don't understand here." he said, standing up and raising his voice. The guard behind them took a step closer and Madison's dad cleared his throat and sat back down.
"Then what's with the tax fraud?" Madison challenged.
Her dad brushed her off, "Are you seeing your therapist?"
"Not that it's any of your business, but yes."
He leaned in closer and Madison sat back not wanting anything to do with him. He sighed and sat up straight. "Listen, I'm sorry that you're mom's been giving you a hard time lately. I want you to know that I'll always be here if you need me."
"Yeah, because you're stuck here," said Madison, waving her hands around. "This is a prison," she said the last part with frustration and stood up. "If you really cared, you would've picked your own family instead of some stupid illegals."
Her dad shook his head and waved goodbye as she stormed out. He didn't understand. He had hurt her, destroyed their family, and for what? Nothing. Madison took one last glance at the visitor's room and headed out. She didn't think that she would ever come back.
