Chapter 10: The Sellout• Anwar

Anwar and everyone else at his table exchanged uncertain glances as they read the article. Madison's dad was in prison? He slightly remembered Madison bragging about how her dad was up in Manhattan dissolving crime for the good of the country. And abetting illegal immigrants? That was weird...

Anwar came out of his train of thought as Jace whistled, "Madison's not taking this well. Look at her, she looks like she's about to explode."

Anwar turned to look at her, and sure enough, Madison sat there red-faced and wide-eyed forcing mac and cheese down her throat. He wanted to laugh, but feel bad for her simultaneously. Her so-called friends stood up and left, leaving Madison isolated in the middle of the cafeteria.

Anwar glanced over at Nayla. She had a book out, but he could see her smug smile. She had totally done this, so badass. How had she airdropped anonymously though? He didn't even know that was a thing.

The bell rang and Anwar picked up his pace to catch up with Nayla.

He tapped her on the shoulder, "Hey."

She turned around and gave him a once over, "Hi."

Anwar ran his hand through his hair, "Listen, I'm sorry I didn't say anything last time-" he paused for a second not wanting to insult Madison. "She wasn't being very nice."

"Yeah, she never is," said Nayla.

Anwar nodded, "Yeah, it's nice that you got revenge on her or whatever." He stood in an awkward way not knowing what to do with his hands.

Nayla smiled knowingly, "That wasn't me. I have no idea what you're talking about. I was reading my book the whole time." She held up her book for proof.

Anwar laughed, "Sure, ok. Let's go with that."

She smiled back at him and they didn't say anything for a minute, they just stared at each other in silence.

"Do you wanna come over later?" said Nayla, breaking the silence.

Anwar, who was a little taken back by her boldness, thought about it for a second. "Yeah, that sounds fun."

She gave him a sly smile and walked away. He stood there dumbstruck, pondering what had just happened.

And then Madison came out of nowhere.

"Looks like you have a little date," she said, crossing her arms. She was trying to maintain her cool, but Anwar could tell she was still a little shaken up.

"Nah, we're just friends," Anwar said. He didn't want Madison getting the wrong idea.

"Ok," she said, giving him a side-eye. "Then give me your phone number."

Anwar's heart started beating faster and it took all his self-control to not start bouncing up and down. He fumbled with his phone and pulled up his contact list. "612..." He started.

Later that day Anwar went to Nayla's house. She opened the door and let him in. He smiled at her and took a look around. It was a nice house. Her house was white and pale blue on the outside and had a brownish beige theme on the inside.

Nayla pointed him towards the couch, "I was thinking we could just chill and watch something."

"Brooklyn 99!" they said in unison. Anwar laughed and made himself comfortable on the couch.

"Yeah, so there's no one home at the moment, but they'll be back like at seven," said Nayla. "And I'll go get some popcorn," she said as she disappeared into the kitchen.

Anwar felt his phone buzz and took it out. Why was Madison texting him? He opened it up and sent her a quick reply as Nayla came back with the popcorn.

Madison: Can you get some dirt on Nayla for me? We both know she's the one that airdropped that article to everyone, plus she totally has a crush on you.

Anwar: K
