Chapter 1

Today has been one of the worst days in school ever. My best friend and I got into a fight, I got an F on my science test, and I seen a kid who ranks a 10 on the scale. Today was just one of those days.
I forgot to tell you what the scale is and who I am! I am Jamie Jean Cash, but my friends call me JJ. I am 15 years old and go to creek view high. I was born with a gift that nobody has. The thing is I can see how dangerous people are. It can get kinda scary at times to. I just look at someone and within seconds know what they are capable of. It's really hard to explain how I know but I do. Not many people think that I'm special in any way. Not many people know that I have this special gift. People really underestimate me though. I'm kinda small for my age. I only stand 5 feet and 4 inches and I only way 100 pounds. I have medium length auburn hair and emerald green eyes. My best friend,Gracie, really helps with how people see me though. She is tall with blonde hair and blue eyes. We have been best friends since grade school. Then comes out other two friends, Steve and Johnny, they are the reason me and Gracie even got through middle school.
Steve is 16. He stands 6 feet 5 inches. He towers over me, but that has never stopped him from being there for me. Steve has a strong build. He never lifts weights or works out unless it's in gym and still looks as strong as some of the jocks. Steve is just as strong as them too. He has hair that is such a light brown it's almost blonde that he combs back everyday. Steve's eyes are a icy green that look cold and mean. Then Steve's features are unlike any other. His nose had been broken three times and it was starting to curve a little. His cheekbones looked sharp and could be seen quite well from any angle. Steve was really a walking mystery to me. He had a bad boy vibe about him. He ranked a 6 on the scale which meant capable of some bad things but he would never hurt me. I even ranked a 6 on the scale myself. Steve was a great person. He was caring, funny, and always ready to do something crazy with me and Gracie.
Johnny on the other hand was completely different. He was smaller than Steve. Johnny stood just under 6 foot. Johnny ranked a 4 on the scale and Gracie was in between all of us on the scale with a 5. Johnny could still do some damage and get kinda crazy. Johnny had black hair that just went crazy no matter how much he brushed or how much grease was put in it. He had hazel eyes that always looked different depending on how he felt. Johnny was into drawing, music, and hanging out with me and Gracie and Steve. Johnny was always there for me and Gracie to.
As a whole we were a crazy group that nobody wanted to mess with. If someone messed with one of us they messed with us all. We also helped each other in school. We were all great kids and had our strengths and weaknesses. Not all of us had the best home lives either. Johnny had the best of all of us and his dad was having an affair and his parents fought all the time. Mine beat me. They would knock me senseless. Steve has saved me a few times. I'm thinking about moving in with Gracie. She has her own place and works her butt off. Her parents were killed a few years ago in their sleep. Gracie's older brother was the one who killed them to. He had been in and out of mental hospitals for two years before he snapped and killed them. I had never met her brother. Gracie said he was losing his mind and going mental and stuff so I never had any intentions of wanting to meet him. Gracie works so hard to keep her house. She has family everywhere but here. Her aunt and uncle from Indiana send her money every month for food, cloths, and bills. Gracie works two jobs and baby sits on weekends so she can keep her house be near us. Then it comes to Steve's parents. It makes my blood boil thinking about them. They beat Steve. They have also cut him and tried to drown him. Steve really loves his parents but they don't love him. On a daily bases they tell him they wish he was never born or to go die in a whole and that they wished he would go kill him self. It's really starting to get to him. He is even thinking of moving in with Gracie just like I am.  We don't all have a lot extra spending money but we share what we have. One thing we all buy is cigarettes. No matter what at least one of us have a switch and smokes. We smoke like a freight train for four teenagers. We also all carry a switchblade knife. They help for a good bluff and work great when you really need them. We get into a lot of fights. It's not our fault. The side of town live on really has more to do with it. We have lived here in Austin, Texas our whole lives.
It's not a bad place. Things are hard right now and the town is kinda divided. There's the hoods and JDs which is where we fit in. Then there's the Preps. They have money and everything comes easy for them. Their always high on something so we can never really know what they are gonna do.
I walk into the house and see a note on the table. I picked up and read what it said. The note was from my brother. It said:

Dear Punk,
Mom and dad left and are never coming back. Since the house is all mine (since I'm the oldest) I'm kicking you out. Since you need a little money take the money that is on the table with this note. Now take all your stuff and get out. I never want to see you ever again as long as we both live. Anything you leave her I am going to sell or burn. Best of luck (not that I really care) hope life treats you well (not) now get your stuff and get. Life is not fair so hahaha. I never want to see you again.
With no love your                 big brother Matt

What the heck is all I thought as tears welled in my eyes as I packed my stuff. I went to the only place I knew I could go. To Gracie's.  She said door was always open no matter how much we fought.
