05 | finding out the truth
I awoke with a strange sense of unease. It all came rushing back—the events of last night. Did he see the scars? Please, let him not have seen them. Please.
Descending the stairs, I found the house empty. However, chaos reigned outside. That's when it hit me—there was a battle unfolding.
Despite Leon's indifference toward me as a mate or Luna, I couldn't just stand idly by. This fight was for the pack, and I was determined to play my part. Without hesitation, I shifted into my wolf form and joined the fray.
I bolted out of bed and swiftly prepared for the impending battle. Transforming into my wolf form, I bounded out of the house. I noticed that Charlotte's door remained closed, suggesting she hadn't yet awakened. It was a relief; at least she wouldn't be exposed to the danger of combat.
The battlefield was teeming with adversaries. Surrendering control to my wolf, he pounced on a rogue, tearing through his throat with a ruthless bite. However, another rogue had schemed a sneak attack from behind.
Sensing his presence, I pivoted just in time, and we both tumbled to the ground. He managed to graze my arm with his claws before meeting his demise.
As I scanned the chaos around me, I spotted a white wolf. Though smaller in stature, her eyes bore a striking familiarity—Charlotte.
To my surprise, she handled herself admirably. Lost in my thoughts for a moment, I soon found three more rogues charging at me, prompting me to engage them in fierce combat.
I shifted into my wolf form and swiftly exited the house. Leon was unmistakable, his wolf, a commanding presence as all Alphas possessed imposing forms.
Despite his presence, I didn't acknowledge him and lunged at one of the rogues, clamping my jaws onto his leg before swiftly moving on to his neck. My wolf, though smaller and less formidable, struggled to bring the rogue down.
Everything unfolded in a blur, and I found myself defenseless when two more rogues pounced on me. They began to claw and attack my abdomen, overwhelming me with pain.
Tears welled up in my eyes as the agony washed over me. The scars that hadn't fully healed from Austin's torment began to bleed anew.
Just as I felt my consciousness slipping away due to the excruciating pain, I faintly glimpsed a massive black wolf charging at the rogues assaulting me.
Leon.
I mustered all my strength to keep my eyes open as Leon shifted back into his human form and gently scooped me into his arms, carrying me bridal-style to the pack hospital.
The battle seemed to have concluded, but many had suffered injuries. As he transported me to the hospital, darkness began to envelop me.
I dispatched those two rogues with ease, then caught sight of Charlotte in dire straits, pinned down by three menacing rogues. A menacing growl surged from deep within me as I sprinted over, tearing them off her without an ounce of mercy. She lay there, exhausted, and her wolf shifted back due to her weakness.
Blood stains marked her near the stomach area, and I hastily draped a shirt over her, cradling her fragile form in my arms. The journey to the pack hospital was swift, and I could tell she remained conscious throughout, though her strength waned with every step.
Halfway there, however, she succumbed to unconsciousness. I hastened my steps and alerted the pack doctor to prepare for her arrival.
Once inside, I followed closely as the pack doctor began her examination. With Charlotte's shirt lifted, my anger ignited like a storm. Blood oozed from her wound, and the telltale signs of fist marks adorned her stomach. Her back bore the cruel remnants of belt marks and other wounds, possibly even some fractured bones.
The evidence was undeniable—someone had subjected her to unspeakable brutality. A furious fire of rage consumed me. It was now evident why she consistently concealed herself beneath layers of clothing. Those responsible for harming my mate would face the direst of consequences; no one dared to harm her with impunity.
As Charlotte lay on the hospital bed, sleeping peacefully, I traced my fingers gently over her wounds. These injuries must have been inflicted long ago, yet they had refused to heal.
I swore to unearth the truth about her tormentors. Still, one pressing question gnawed at me: Why wouldn't she confide in me? She knew that I could easily vanquish her assailants, yet she chose to remain silent.
