Chapter 7 ~ Heartfelt Talks and Scary Dreams

After talking with Draco and cleaning myself up, I changed into my pajamas and sat on the bed with Draco. We had an entire conversation, and I was happy about that. We were both tired of not having the time speaking to each other as the days went on, so tonight was a perfect night to make up what we had missed.

"Max?"

"Yeah?"

Draco paused for a moment. "If you could, would you bring Cedric back?"

I brushed a piece of hair from my face. "Time is a delicate thing to mess with. It would've been dangerous to do it. Besides, I can't keep living in the past. I have you and Scorpius now. That's all I really need."

Draco smiled. "Speaking of Scorpius, do you think we should talk to him before he leaves tomorrow?"

I thought about it. While I was thinking, I looked down at my wrist and had an idea. "I want to try talking to him."

So I got off the bed, followed by Draco, and went to Scorpius' room.

"Max, are you sure that you're up for it?" Draco asked me.

I nodded my head. "Yeah, I'm sure." I headed inside Scorpius' room and shut the door behind me. "Hey, Scorpius."

"Hi," he said, sitting on his bed.

I sat down with him. "Can we talk?"

He shrugged his shoulders. "I don't feel like talking, Mum."

"You've been saying that all summer," I told him. "I think it's time that we talk."

He looked down at something in his hands. "I heard you crying earlier," he said all of a sudden. "Are you okay?"

I nodded my head. "Yeah, I'm fine. Anyway, whatcha got there?"

Scorpius looked at what was in his hand and held it up. "Oh, it's a gift from Uncle Ron. It's a Spell-Checking Quill. It's used to correct misspelling."

"Cool," I said, smiling at him. "How are you, Scorpius?"

"I'm fine, Mum," he replied.

"I want to show you something," I told him. I pointed at my bracelet on my wrist and held it up for Scorpius to see.

"A bracelet?" he asked.

"I know it's probably too girly for you, but it means something to me. It used to be a necklace. I've had it since I was your age. I lost it one night. Uncle Harry found it for me and turned it into a bracelet and gave it to me for my seventeenth birthday."

"Where did you get all of these charms?" he asked.

"Well, the silver heart is from Cedric. He gave it to me the night before he died. The dog is from Sirius, my godfather. He gave it to me as a Christmas gift, which ended up being the last one I received from him. This one, the one with my name, is from Harry. I got it for my sixteenth birthday. He wrote me a letter with it. This blue eagle was from Dumbledore, which helped with the war."

"What about these last three?" Scorpius questioned.

I smiled. "You father gave those to me. They all represent something about me. It's the only thing of mine that I have left. I want you to have it. If you ever feel down or you just want to give up, look at this bracelet and know that your father and I will always love you and that we're here for you." For the first time since I was seventeen, I took off the bracelet. "You remind me so much of the ones that gave me these charms, so it seems fitting that this bracelet is yours now."

Scorpius took the bracelet and then looked up at me. "Thank you, Mum." He wrapped his arms around me.

"You're welcome, sweetheart," I said back. "I just want you to be happy, you know that?"

"Yeah, I know," he replied. He pulled away and stared at me. "I love you, Mum."

I smiled and kissed him on the forehead. "I love you, too, Scorpius."

Scorpius placed the bracelet and quill on his bedside table and crawled under the blankets. I bid him goodnight and quietly left his room. I sighed in content and went back to my bedroom. Draco was already under the covers, but he was still awake.

"How did it go?" he inquired.

"It went well," I answered, getting beside Draco on the bed.

"Where's your bracelet?" he asked, pointing at my wrist.

"I gave it to Scorpius," I said. "I want him to have a part of me with him wherever he goes."

Draco chuckled. "You know, I left him my ring on his table with a note attached to it while he was sleeping last night."

"The Slytherin House ring?" I asked.

He nodded his head. "I wanted him to have a part of me with him, too."

I laughed. "Great minds think alike, huh?"

"You bet," Draco said. "Well, I think it's time we went to bed. Goodnight, Max."

"Goodnight, Draco," I replied, turning off the lamp beside me.

"I love you," Draco whispered in my ear.

I smiled. "I love you, too."

"Potter!"

I was watering the plants outside when I heard Lucius' voice from the front of the house. I turned off the hose and made my way to the front.

"Don't yell, Lucius!" Narcissa hissed as she was coming outside. "Let me handle this."

"Fine," Lucius grumbled, disappearing into the house.

Narcissa turned to face me and gave me a weak smile. "Hello, dear. I would like to talk to you about something."

"If it's about what happened this morning, I didn't mean to burn Draco's toast," I whimpered.

"Oh, no, you're not in trouble. I wanted to talk to you about something else. Let's go inside, shall we?" Narcissa led me inside the house and into the kitchen. We sat down at the table. "Sweetheart, did you ever do things that you weren't sure how it happened? Things that you just couldn't explain?"

I nodded my head. "I got angry one time and the lamp beside me exploded. I also--" I began to tell her what happened at the zoo, but I knew that I would get in trouble if she found out.

"You also what?" she asked. "It's okay, you can tell me. It'll just be between you and me, I promise."

I swallowed hard and reluctantly nodded my head. "I-I snuck out one day while you guys were gone. I went to the zoo and met a boy there. We made the glass window disappear, then it reappeared again."

"You and this boy removed the glass and made it reappear together?" Narcissa asked.

"Yeah, we did."

"What was the boy's name?"

"Harry. His name was Harry."

Narcissa paused for a moment, then spoke again. "Well, it seems like you've got some magic in you."

"Magic?" I repeated. "Like what you use sometimes?"

Narcissa nodded her head. "You're a witch, Maxine."

All of a sudden, the sound of whispering caught my attention.

"Maxxxinnnee Pottterrrr..."

I gasped and opened my eyes, shooting up from the bed. I began to breathe heavily. I felt myself sweating and my forehead throbbing with pain. I closed my eyes shut and I pressed hard on my forehead, groaning in pain.

"Max?" Draco said in a tired voice, sitting up from the bed. "Max, what is it? Are you okay?"

"I'm fine," I lied, calming down. "Go back to sleep."

"Max, I can tell when you're not fine," Draco said. "Lumos." His wand was now shining in my face. "Was it a nightmare?"

I hesitated before saying, "Yes."

"What was it about?"

I leaned back against the bed and looked at Draco. "I was eleven. Your mum and I were talking in the kitchen. She was asking me about any unexplained things happening around me. Once I told her about a lamp exploding and what happened at the zoo, she said that I was a witch. Then, I heard his voice. I heard him whispering my name."

"Who was whispering your name?" he asked.

I rolled my eyes at him. "Dumbledore," I said in a sarcastic tone. "Who do you think?"

"Voldemort," he muttered.

"Yes, Voldemort," I replied.

"Do you want a Sleeping Draught?" he asked me.

"No, I'm fine," I answered, getting out of bed.

"You don't seem fine," he retorted.

I went into the bathroom and turned the light on. I placed my hands on the counter and looked at my reflection in the mirror. I heard Draco follow me in the bathroom. He gently put his hands on my shoulders.

"It wasn't easy, you know, with Amos Diggory saying all that stuff to me," I said, changing the subject. "What's hard about taking it all in is that he's right. Cedric died because of me and Harry--"

"Max, that's not fair on you or Harry..."

"--and with all of this anger that I have right now from Amos and this nightmare...it's just hard to cope with, you know?" I brushed some hair out of my face. "I'm sorry. I just had to get that off my chest."

"Max, it's okay," Draco told me, kissing the back of my head. "Come on, you might feel better if you go back to--"

All of a sudden, I gasped. I felt an intense pain go back to my forehead. I did everything to resist the urge to reach up and touch it.

"Max? What is it?" A concerned Draco asked.

"Nothing. I'm fine. Come on, let's--"

"Is it your scar?"

"No, I'm fine."

"Max." I looked at a serious Draco. "How long has it been since your scar hurt?"

This time, I couldn't lie. "Twenty-two years."
