Chapter 06 | Graffiti Park
A couple days had passed since that fight with those guys, and I can say that my head definitely did not feel better. Concentrating was nearly impossible, and being able to form coherent thoughts was not any easier either.
I laid in bed for a few more minutes before I finally got up.
The smell of pancakes and bacon wafted into my room from the kitchen and a smile quickly formed on my face.
In the kitchen, Jordan stood near the stove, a deep look of concentration written all over his face and my smile grew a little more each second I stood there watching him.
"Good morning." I finally said, walking over to lean against the counter near him. "Pancakes and bacon, what's the occasion?"
"Nothing in particular, just wanted to spoil you." He turned and shot me a wink. In the moments that followed, he picked the pan up off the stove and flipped the pancake. It landed perfectly flipped on to it's other side.
I scoffed at him, pushing myself off the counter to grab a cup from the cabinet to his right. "Show off."
"Anything for you."
My heart beat a little faster in my chest at that.
"So," I said, clearing my throat, "what's the game plan for today?"
Jordan just shrugged his shoulders. "Is there anything in particular you want to do?"
"Not really."
"How's your head doing."
"Fine." I was such a little liar. But if I told Jordan the truth, he would fret over me and I wouldn't be able to do what I really wanted to do, train.
I was leaving for California in a couple weeks with Tony and I was not prepared at all.
In my current state, I was going to get myself killed. If that happened before I took down Colton, Cooper's death would have been in vain.
"Really? You hit your head pretty hard. You should have a minor concussion at the least." Jordan glanced at me from the corner of his eyes.
Just believe me dammit.
"Well you know me," I laughed awkwardly, "I've got a thick skull."
"Oh trust me, I know that alright. If your skull wasn't so thick, you wouldn't have been in that position in the first place." The corners of his mouth tipped up in a smirk at his own joke.
I rolled my eyes and filled my cup up with some orange juice.
"I told you, this time I couldn't avoid it. But trust me, I wanted to." I turned around and busied myself with something on the island.
"I know, I know," then, I felt his chin lay on top of my shoulder as his arms wrapped around my waist and pulled me into him. "I know I've said it several times, but I'm glad you're okay Daytona."
Could he hear how fast my heart was beating?
Or how shallow my breaths became?
Could he feel the heat radiating off my cheeks.
His breath fanned my neck and I got an involuntary shiver down my spine.
"Don't scare me like that again you dork." He let go of me and ruffled my hair. "Breakfast is done by the way."
I took a deep, steady breath. These feelings I was getting for Jordan, I could not afford right now. I was lying to his face. I was leaving for California. I was leaving him behind.
And who knows if I'll make it back.
"Hey, what's wrong?" Hearing his voice broke me out of my trance.
"Oh, nothing. Just thinking about what we could do today." I offered up my softest smile.
Liar.
I grabbed some bacon and a pancake and slapped it down on to a plate. "Let's eat."
After breakfast, Jordan and I both split the job of doing the dishes. He washed them while I dried them. Then, we sat on the couch and binged the last few episodes of Supernatural.
"Ah come on man, how can they end the season like that!" I threw the remote onto the spot next to me in frustration. "Seriously what kind of ending is that?!"
I raised my voice a bit and instantly regretted it as pain sliced through my head.
"Don't worry, they're scheduled to do a fifteenth season." Jordan chuckled at my outburst.
"Good." I crossed my arms with a huff. "I thought about what I wanted to do today." Shifting to my left, I faced Jordan with my hands folded in my lap.
"There's this club a couple of blocks over and-"
"No. Absolutely not." Jordan crossed his arms and raised in eyebrow at me, almost as if he was saying 'why on Earth do you even think that's a good idea?'
"But you didn't let me finish," I pouted.
"Do I need to remind you of your past experiences with clubs back home?" His eyebrow crept up even more. "If I recall correctly, Micah stalked you at a bar, and then Colton found you at a club as well. Should I keep going or?"
I let out a defeated sigh. "No, you're right. I just thought it would be different since we were here. Away from all of that."
Jordan continued to look at me with his eyebrow raised for a few more seconds before he let out a dejected sigh of his own. "Do you really want to go to this club?"
"Yes! It's one of the highest rated clubs here!" I clapped my hands when Jordan finally gave in and said we could go.
When the time rolled around for us to get ready to leave, I decided to wear a tight black dress with a blue jean jacket paired with my black boots. I let my hair down and decided to leave it natural and applied minimal makeup. Just a touch of mascara and lip gloss.
Physically I was ready. Mentally I was still in bed wearing pajamas with dried drool stuck to my face.
I stared at myself in the bathroom mirror. "You've got this Daytona. You're head doesn't hurt and you're not scared. You're going to be fine."
With that little pep talk, I turned on my heel and walked out of the bathroom.
Jordan was already waiting for me on the couch. He was wearing a white button up shirt tucked into black jeans. His hair stuck out in a few directions as if he tried to style it but gave up half way through.
And he looked hot.
"Are you ready to-" he stopped talking when he looked at me. I could see a smirk starting to creep up on his face. "You look beautiful Day."
I stopped dead in my tracks and it was like I got sucked back to our homecoming dance.
"You look beautiful Day." Those were Logan's words to me the night Jordan saved me from Micah and let me crash at his place.
"Daytona? Oh my gosh. I called you Day, I'm so sorry. It just kind of slipped and I know that's what they called you."
"It's fine Jordan, you can call me Day. It just caught me off guard is all." I walked up to him and snuck my arm through his. "I'm serious. It's okay."
I could tell he still felt really bad, but he nodded his head and we left.
It wasn't a long walk to the club, and since it was night time already, a lot of the foot traffic that was usually on the street had cleared up.
A cool spring breeze swept trash up and down the street ahead of us. The same breeze blew my hair back over my shoulder and caused me to shiver lightly.
When we finally arrived, the wait line wasn't too long. Maybe because it had already been open for an hour and a half or maybe it just wasn't a busy day. Who knows.
The interior of the club was wild. They had different colored neon lights shining around and there was some type of punk cover band up on a raised stage.
"This is so cool!" I yelled to Jordan over the loud music.
Jordan just shrugged his shoulders and even though he was trying to act all cool, I could see he was actually enjoying himself.
And for the first time in awhile, I was enjoying myself too.
That was, of course, until a particularly slender Danni in a very revealing shirt sauntered our way.
"Jordan?! Is that you?" She ran the rest of the way and gave him a tight hug.
Again, I was ignored.
"I didn't know you like this club!" Her hand lingered on his shoulder for a second longer than necessary.
"It's my first time here." He eyed her hand but didn't make a move to shake it off.
"Oh really? If you stick with me I can show you all the secrets of this place."
And that was my cue to leave.
"I'm going to the bar." I patted Jordan's available shoulder and started to walk off.
"Day, wait!" He grabbed my wrist, but not tight enough to hurt. "I want to-"
"I'll be fine Jay. I'm just going to get a water." I pulled my wrist out of his grasp and turned on my heel.
Now to just find the bar.
After five minutes of looking for the bar, I had finally found it. And let me tell you, this club, was HUGE.
For example, the bar was in the middle of the club-a little weird but hey, it's not my business- and it took me five whole minutes just to find it.
So when I finally sat down at the only empty seat they had, I had a thin layer of sweat gathering at my hair line.
"What can I get you?" Asked the bartender.
"Just a water please." I propped my chin in my hand.
The lady gave me a knowing look. "Just a water?"
"Yeah, just a water."
"Guy troubles." She grabbed a glass from under the bar and scooped some ice into it.
I contemplated my answer. "Sure, you could say that."
"Let me guess," she finished filling up my glass, "he's not really your guy but you want him to be, but another girl is trying to steal him."
"Ooh, so close." I said with a smile, taking my glass from her. "But I don't want him to be my guy. And I'm happy that he's seeing this girl. She just pretends like I don't exist and it gets on my nerves is all." I drank half the glass and set it down with an 'ahh".
"So you're in denial. I get it. Don't worry, we've all been there."
"I'm not in denial. I really just don't want him to be my guy. He's like family to me." I took another sip.
She gave me another look. "I see." And then she left to go take care of another customer.
I really didn't want Jordan to be my guy. Sure I liked him, but as a friend and nothing more.
And I would not have a Logan repeat.
Jordan was going to come out of this alive, and if holding him at arms length is the only way to successfully do that, than like hell was I ever going to like him as more than a friend.
With that thought, I felt my phone vibrate on the counter.
Jay: are you okay?
Me: I'm okay.
Jay: let me know if you want me to come get you
Jay: I'll get you the moment you ask
Me: will do
I flipped my phone over with that last text.
Curse you Jordan for being so caring.
This would be so much easier if he wasn't, well, Jordan.
I left a ten on the counter for the girl and started to wander around the club. A little ways past the bar was a sunken dance floor with a couple of stair steps leading into it.
Shrugging my shoulders I figured, why the hell not and took the stairs into the dance floor.
For awhile, I just stayed on the outskirts of the crowd of people, casually dancing by myself. But as more people came in, I realized I wasn't at the edge anymore. I was somewhere between the center of everything and the edge.
My heart rate picked up a bit.
This would be the perfect place for someone to try something, but I had to keep my cool.
We weren't in California anymore.
I needed to calm down.
With a deep breath, I threw my hands in the air and swayed my body back and forth. Here, the music was louder and I had a splitting headache, but I was having fun.
I danced by myself for a few more songs. A bead of sweat dripped down the side of my face; I didn't make a move to wipe it away.
As the last song ended and 'SOS' by Avicii came on, I felt a pair of hands lightly grab my waist.
A surge of panic swept through me.
In my fit of panic, I threw my elbow back into whoever had me.
An 'umph' was heard from behind me but the person didn't let up their grip. "Am I not allowed to dance with the girl I live with?"
"Jordan?" I asked.
Turning around I saw him grinning in pain.
"You scared me dork. I thought you were, you know who, for a second."
Jordan finally let go of me and held his heart. "Ouch. I think that hurt more than your elbow."
"Well when you sneak up behind me like that,"
"Yeah yeah, I get it. Don't sneak up on you again. May I have this dance?"
I rolled my eyes but let him place his hands back on my waist. "So, what brings you here? What happened to Danni? Shouldn't you be dancing with her?"
"Daytona, I-"
"There you are Jordan!" Danni pushed her way through the crowd and hung off of Jordan's back.
I pried Jordan's hands off my waist and gave him a soft smile.
"I was wondering where you went. I turned around and you were gone." Noticing his hands were off me, Danni quickly positioned herself between us.
"Actually Danni, I'm not feeling too well. I'm going to take Daytona and go home. See you at work tomorrow." Jordan maneuvered around her and grabbed my hand, guiding me through the people and out of the club.
"Um what are we doing? We were barely even there for half an hour." Despite my protesting, Jordan kept walking further and further away from the club.
"I needed to get out of there." He grumbled, almost inaudible. "There's some place I want to take you."
~~~~🌻~~~~
"A graffiti park? This is where you wanted to take me?"
Jordan's hair meshed with the night sky as I looked up at him.
"I think this place is poetic." He took my hand in his again and we walked around looking at all the walls covered in layer upon layer of graffiti.
"And how's that?" I asked, picking up a half empty can of spray paint off the ground.
"Look around you. This place, everyone who visits it leaves a little bit of them behind. Whether it's just a little signature or a whole mural, it's beautiful.
"And what's more, it's all done in a way that's typically illegal. Isn't it amazing!"
I watched as his face lit up while he described his feelings for this place.
"Well, when you put it like that, I guess it is kind of beautiful. Here, stand against this wall."
Jordan jogged up to the closest wall and pressed his back against it.
I shook up the paint in the can and very carefully outlined Jordan, but as I neared finishing the outline, my hand got a random seize and next thing I knew, there was a bold red line across Jordan's white shirt.
"Um," I stifled a laugh, "my bad?"
Jordan's eyes were wide as he slowly looked down at the red on his shirt. "Oh now you're going to get it."
He bent down and picked up another can of spray paint and I took off running.
"It was an accident! I didn't mean too!" I laughed as a ran between walls trying to dodge the vengeful Jordan.
I made a quick second decision and dived behind one of the many walls and pressed myself against the hard surface, holding my breath.
It sounded as if Jordan's footsteps got further away so I let out the breath I had been holding in.
"Gotcha!" he popped out from my left and sprayed the bottom of my dress and part of my leg with yellow.
"Rude!" I sprayed him back and took off again with Jordan on my tail.
A dove behind another wall and patiently waited. It didn't take long for Jordan to find me, but this time, I was ready.
My arm was outstretched in warning. "Don't come any closer, or I'll spray you. I mean it!"
"As if that's going to stop me," his paint can was at the ready too. But unlike me, Jordan was trigger happy and started didn't give any warning before a yellow spot started to grow on my dress.
I started to try and run to my right, but there was a wall there. I was cornered.
And Jordan was getting closer and closer.
He was less than an arms length away now, but he still didn't let up and I could feel the paint seep through my clothing.
The tips of our shoes touched and he put a hand on the wall on either side of me. He tilted his head towards me. We were so close that if either one of us moved an inch, we were sure to kiss.
I need to get out of here.
Jordan tucked a stray strand of hair behind my ear and my heart started to beat a little faster.
Even though we were under the cover of darkness, I could still see a rosy hue on Jordan's cheeks.
Was he blushing?
His lips got closer and closer to mine.
My body reacted before my brain did. Ducking under his arm, I spun around and painted a large X across his back.
He turned around and looked almost, disappointed?
"You owe me a new dress," I pouted, "and I'll buy you a new shirt."
"Don't bother. I have more at home." The darkness of the night seemed to soften his usually hard features. The Jordan in front of me was completely different than the Jordan I lived with.
"Let's go home." He laid a hand on my head and I watched as he walked out of the park.
Tonight would be a night I would never forget.
