Chapter 11| The Unforgettable Field Trip Begins
Decided to skip some chapters of the manga as I didn't see any reason for me to put any sort of scene for Y/N and such or I just couldn't think of a scenario to implement him. So, this chapter and onward, I'll probably lay off of the Horimiya manga for a bit until they become third years.
There may be a scene or two, just haven't decided which one yet or if there will be one. So for the time being, it'll just be doing the quints manga before I go back and start doing stuff with the Horimiya manga again. Anyway, onward with the chapter.
---
Skipping down the hallway of the school, with Y/N in tow, Yotsuba was singing to herself cheerfully. After all, there was a special event coming up.
"Field trip!~ Field trip!~" Yotsuba sang.
"Y-Yotsuba-san! Wait up!"
"Hurry up, L/N-san!" Yotsuba flashed Y/N a quick grin before she resumed her skipping. She soon arrived at the library with Y/N, opening the door. "Uesugi-san!~ It's almost time for the field trip!"
A person in a mask appears in front of the two. He spoke in a low voice. "Yotsuba. Y/N."
"Uwaaaaahhh!" The two screamed in surprise, Y/N's more filled with fear.
The person then removed their mask. "It's me."
"Ah! Uesugi-san," the two sighed in relief.
Fuutarou put his mask back on.
"Who are you!?"
"It's me."
"Oh, phew.~"
Fuutarou once again puts the mask back on.
"Help!" The two screamed for the last time.
---
"Be quiet in the library!" The librarian scolded, then walking away.
Y/N, Yotsuba, and Fuutarou bow their heads in an apologetic manner. "I'm sorry."
Once she nodded and left, the three turn back to their table. Miku was already there, but Ichika, Nino, and Itsuki were missing.
Yotsuba then looked to Fuutarou. "That blonde wig oddly suits you. But why do you have all these costume props with you, anyway?"
"Yeah. Did something happen?" Y/N asked, tilting his head.
Fuutarou threw a book at Y/N's face. "You were there, idiot! Pay attention to your surroundings!"
"Ow!"
"Because I'm now on the executive committee for the test of courage we're doing," Fuutarou sighed in annoyance.
"You mean for the field trip?" Yotsuba asked. "Wow, that's pretty rare of you to be so sociable, Uesugi-san."
A visible tick mark appeared on top of his head. "I'm not doing it because I want to. Apparently, my class was put in charge for the test of courage. And they decided to force the troublesome role onto me while I was doing some self-study."
Both Y/N and Yotsuba sweat drop. "Our condolences..."
'Why are you two apologizing?' Fuutarou annoyingly thought. 'In fact, why didn't they single Y/N out? If anything, he was lost in his own little world while he held a dumb face... Now that I think about it, Itsuki was staring at him the whole time...'
"You reap what you sow," Miku said.
Fuutarou let out a "tch." He then re-donned his mask. "I'm gonna pay them back in full by scaring the living daylights out of them, and make it a night they'll never forget."
"You're really getting into this, huh?" Miku deadpanned a little.
"Itsuki's not helping me, even though we're in the same class. And I don't think Y/N will, either."
"Th-That's not true, Uesugi-san!" Fuutarou looks at him, while still wearing the mask. "Who are you!?"
Fuutarou deadpanned. "It's still me, dumbass."
Yotsuba then nodded all of a sudden. "That's so mean to make one person do all the work! I'm going to complain to Class 1!"
"Don't bother," the boy responded. "It's like what Miku said, I reap what I sow. Besides, I really don't care about the field trip myself."
"Mou..." Yotsuba pouted. She then gained a mischievous grin, "How about I tell you guys a story that will get you excited for the field trip?"
The other three soon gave her their full attention. It seemed that they were interested, Yotsuba soon smiling.
"I heard this from my friends in class. Did you know there's a legend associated with the field trip? It's said you'll be bound by fate for life to the partner you dance with at the finale of the bonfire dance that takes place on the last day."
Fuutarou sneered under his mask, "That's so unscientific. What a load of bull."
"Yup," Miku agreed.
"Kids these days are too apathetic!" Yotsuba yelled.
"Most high school romances end in breakups," Fuutarou said. "It's a waste of time."
"But even so, you'd want to date the person you like, wouldn't you?" She asked. Yotsuba soon shook her head. "Anyway, instead of reading the textbook, I'm going to thoroughly go through the guidebook today and get in the spirit!"
While the two were mingling amongst themselves, both Y/N and Miku were awfully quiet. They had their own thoughts running through their minds.
Y/N on the other hand was thinking of what Yotsuba said. The so-called legend.
"If you dance with your partner at the bonfire that takes place on the last day, you'll be bound together for life."
It honestly did sound a bit farfetched. However, his mind then roamed to Itsuki. Through the past few months, they had been growing very close to one another. Confiding themselves in her room when they were alone, learning more and more about each other each day. Well, if anything, Itsuki was learning more about Y/N each day. But aside from that, Y/N began to grow feelings for the girl. Undescribable feelings that he wouldn't be able to tell Fuutarou. Fuutarou would just tell him that they were just complete and utter nonsense and he just focus on his studies.
He couldn't confide them with Nino as he wasn't sure what she'd do to him, which was most likely something horrible or around the lines of that. Ichika would probably tease him about it, and he wasn't really used to her teasing, it made him embarrassed. Miku was a bit of a mixed bag, and Yotsuba would most likely support him. But even still.
These feelings were all so new to him. But they were undescribable and difficult to tell others. Especially Itsuki.
Miku then posed a question to the two. "Why do people go out with the person they like?"
Fuutarou and Yotsuba look at her, responding with equal confusion. "Huh?"
"Mmm... Why indeed," a new voice spoke. It revealed to be Ichika, who just appeared next to Miku. "Well, it's because they like the person so much that they can't bear it." She then leaned down to her sister. "You sort of get how that feels, don't you, Miku?"
Miku blushed slightly. "N-No, I don't."
"Ichika, you're late!" Fuutarou barked, still wearing his mask. "We're already getting started!"
"Umm... Just what are you starting exactly?" She sheepishly asked. Ichika then sighed. "But we're filming again today. So I have to head off now. My job is what matters the most to me right now! Sorry for making you feel lonely!"
"I ain't feeling lonely," he responded, removing his mask. His plan for his current study session was falling apart.
"Do your best," Miku monotonously replied.
Y/N smiled. "Good luck."
"Go get 'em, Ichika!" Yotsuba cheered her sister on.
Just as she was about to leave, Ichika's phone went off. Taking it out to read the message, her eyes widen a bit before she turned to Miku.
"The people from my class are asking for me, but I need to head to work. Looks like there's still some things we haven't decided on for the field trip. Miku, can you do the usual?" She asked.
Miku nodded. "Alright. Fuutarou, I'm borrowing one of your wigs."
Fuutarou gained a blank stare. "...The usual...?"
Y/N begins to tune himself out of the conversation, blocking out the noise as he looks down. In his hand was his phone, which rested on his lap.
His phone was open to his contacts, his thumb hovering over a particular one.
'...Dancing with your partner at the bonfire dance on the last day and you'll be bound by fate, huh? I wonder...'
The contact number his thumb was hovering over was none other than Itsuki Nakano.
--: Chapter 11| The Unforgettable Field Trip Begins :--
It was the day of the field trip. Y/N was standing in line with Itsuki, as the students were required to line up and wait by the bus they were assigned to. They were assigned by classes, meaning that they couldn't ride with Nino or the others.
Strangely enough, however, Fuutarou Uesugi wasn't seen among the crowd. How odd. Just as he was about to board the bus, Itsuki suddenly grabs the sleeve of his uniform.
"N-Nakano-san...!?"
"Come with me for a moment."
"A-Ah! To where!?"
She simply turned to him. "To Uesugi-kun's house, of course."
"...Eh?"
Quite some time had passed, but not hours, and here Y/N stood, right in front of the Uesugi home with the Nakano sisters. He found it quite odd that Itsuki had abruptly dragged him over to Fuutarou's house, with her siblings as well. Hell, she even got Nino to come, which was already surprising.
However, the reasoning to come here was reasonable... At least he thinks it is? Fuutarou was the executive member for the Test of Courage, so when people found out that he wasn't here, they were frantic. Apparently, they had posed the offer to Itsuki, who was confused and wondered why Fuutarou wasn't here. Obviously, she declined and she said she'd rather have the person meant to do it, do it themselves.
So, here they were, standing in front of his house. They must've known that the buses have already left, so they couldn't waste any longer.
Inside the Uesugi household...
Isanari bolts into Raihai's room. "Raiha! Are you alive!?"
The older man gasped, his eyes wide as he sees who is taking care of his daughter. It was his son, Fuutarou hunched over as he watched the sleeping body of Raiha carefully, diligently monitoring her condition. However, due to the ruckus his father had caused, Raiha stirred slightly, the older Uesugi sibling turning around to give his father an annoyed stare.
"Dad, Raiha is still sleeping. Keep it down."
"You're looking after, huh? Wait, isn't the bus for your field trip about to leave!?"
"Oh, is it? I don't really care, so it slipped my mind." Fuutarou had nonchalantly stated this, getting up and grabbing his back that was meant for the trip. "But this means I now have three whole days to study."
Isanari stared at his son for a moment, his eyes having slight bags. He then looked to the dining table, his eyes spotting something.
Grabbing it, he walked over to his son and tapped his shoulder.
"Fuutarou, you forgot something."
The yellow-eyed teen turned around to stop a small planner in his father's hands. It was the planner that was detailed and riddled with small sticky notes, detailing what kinds of activities and other things to do during the trip. Fuutarou simply stared at it with dull eyes. He thought this whole field trip thing was a waste of time.
Seeing his son not responding, Isanari sighed and gently tapped the planner on his head.
"Sorry I couldn't get back earlier. This is a once-in-a-lifetime event. If you go now, you might still make it in time."
"...The bus is gone. It's really no big deal."
While the two were talking, Raiha soon springs awake from her spot.
"Ah! I'm hungry!"
The two of them stared at her shocked and dumbfounded.
After all, she was just sick. Especially very sick since last night.
Fuutarou awkwardly cleared his throat. "Um... Raiha...? How's your fever...?"
"It got better!" Raiha suddenly stands up and begins pushing her brother, much to his annoyance. "Why is onii-chan still here? Come on, hurry up and go."
"Hey! I got worried for nothing!"
Raiha smiled brightly, "Thanks. I'm okay now, so go have fun on your field trip."
"Like I said, the bus's--"
"The buses have already departed," a new voice suddenly spoke.
The Uesugi family were startled and alarmed by the sudden entry of a new voice. Looking towards it, heading to the entrance to their front door, they find Itsuki and Y/N standing there.
"Itsuki...!? Y/N...!? Why're you..."
"That's my line," the girl interrupted, annoyed.
Y/N suddenly rushes over to Raiha. "Raiha-chan! I heard you had a cold from Uesugi-san last night! Are you feeling okay? Do you have a cold still? Do you need something warm!?"
"I'm okay, Y/N-nii," Raiha cheerfully responds. "Go and have fun on your trip."
"Oi! I wasn't--" Fuutarou tried to speak, but Itsuki suddenly grabs his arm and begins to pull him toward the door. Y/N begins to follow after, now assured that Raiha was fine.
"Excuse me. We'll be borrowing Uesugi-kun."
"Okay!~" Raiha jumped in the air, cheering.
In the background, Isanari nodded. He was glad to see his son had found people to spend time with. Even if he only considered one of them to be his best and only friend.
Now outside, Fuutarou kept trying to wriggle out of Itsuki's grasp.
"But you guys... The bus..."
"Oh, we saw it off, Uesugi-san," Y/N said, hurrying after the two.
"Why did you come to my place?"
"Since we're the only ones who know where your house is," Itsuki said, continung to drag the boy alone with her, "I'm the only one who could guide everyone here."
'Everyone?' He thought.
They continued walking alone the block before they turned the corner. Fuutarou gasped as he was greeted with an unexpected sight.
Standing by a black luxurious car, the other Nakano siblings and their escort were their.
"Fuutarou..." Miku greeted with a small smile.
Ichika held a sheepish expression, "You're late!"
"Over here! Over here!" Yotsuba yelled while waving with a smile.
"Geez, what is he doing..." Nino muttered with an annoyed look.
The black-haired teen was still awestruck. They all came here for him? Just to get him?
He then looked to Itsuki, the girl beginning to speak up.
"I may be part of the executive committee, but I cannot do something like standing around in a dark place by myself." She turned her head around, a slight blush on her face. "Because I'm scared of ghosts, you do it."
"Yeah!" Y/N piped in. "I may be scared of ghosts myself, but I can still help, Uesugi-san!"
Itsuki deadpanned. 'How can you still help if you're scared of ghosts like me? That doesn't make sense.'
The two waited for him to respond. Fuutarou, however, was still in shock or was it disbelief? They couldn't really tell from his expression.
Finally, he sighed in exasperation, rubbing the back of his nape.
"Can't be helped. Guess I'll have to go."
He leaned forward slightly, hiding a small appreciative smile. But just telling from his posture and the way he acted, Y/N could tell that Fuutarou was grateful. He had been friends with him for a year now, so Y/N could tell what the small details were, and how he'd try to hide his appreciation.
Nonetheless, Y/N smiled fondly at his friend, patting his back in the process. However, it may have been too much as Fuutarou had jolted forward slightly, the yellow-eyed teen giving Y/N an annoyed stare while Y/N sheepishly laughed. But Fuutarou soon stopped when he saw something in the corner of his eye. It was his student handbook, which was being offered to him by Nino.
"Geez. If you're going to keep a photo in it that you don't want other people to see, then you should be more careful with it," she said.
"Ah, my bad," he quickly apologized.
Nino said nothing for a moment, looking at the photo that was in the handbook. "He's still my type, no matter how many times I see this. You said that he's your relative but when was this taken?"
"Uh, about five years ago, I guess..." He responded, hesitance in his voice. Nino seemed to believe it, though.
"Hmm... Five years ago, huh. I'm pretty sure I've seen this kid before somewhere..."
Leaning up against the car with Miku, Ichika asked her younger sister something.
"Miku, about that bonfire thing you told me yesterday... Are you sure it's okay for me to do it?" She asked, clearly unsure.
Miku simply shook her head. "Yeah. I was the one who came up with that stopgap excuse, after all."
"Gotcha," Ichika said, stretching her arms over her head. "Well then, looks like onee-chan is going to keep Fuutarou the loner company."
If it weren't evident enough, Miku was beginning to have feelings for Fuutarou. However, Fuutarou was quite dense, so he didn't notice such feelings of her. It didn't help that with his explanation a few days ago regarding relationships, he stated that they were nothing but a "waste of time." Not only that, she wanted to keep the one she liked all to herself.
However...
'I wouldn't do something like that because we're five equal parts of a whole. And plus... Since it's Ichika, I have nothing to worry about,' she though with a bitter smile.
Ichika's face, however, was conflicted. 'If Miku says it's fine, then it's fine, right?'
Everyone soon began to get into the car. In the back, Y/N was forced to squeeze into the middle of the seat, Itsuki refusing to sit next to Fuutarou. So there he sat, a poker-like expression on his face while sat in the middle, the two next to him staring out of their respective windows.
"Everybody in?" Ebata, the chauffuer of the quints asked. "Squeeze closer," he said, referring to Fuutarou and Itsuki to scoot in closer to Y/N.
They did so, but only just by a little bit. Just enough so they didn't suffocate the poor boy that sat in the middle. However, Itsuki blushed slightly, realizing how close in contact she was with the L/N teen. But that soon faded when she turned her head over to Fuutarou, who still kept staring out the window.
Itsuki then tightened and clenched her fist.
'Thanks to the previous test, I have realized the necessity of having someone guide my studies. However, you are too significantly different from my image of an ideal tutor. Uesugi-kun, just how much resolve do you have as a tutor? I'll have to reaffirm it during this field trip. And...'
Her gaze then wandered back to Y/N, her blush soon returning.
'Why can't I get you out of my mind, L/N-kun? What does this mean? It can't mean that... Can it...? Why do you make me feel this way... L/N-kun...'
Y/N notices Itsuki's gaze and looks at her questionably, tilting his head in the process.
"Is something wrong, Nakano-san?"
"...H-Huh? O-Oh... No, it's nothing."
"Are you sure?" He then places a hand on her forehead. "Your face is kind of red. Are you sick?"
"N-No, it's nothing! Really, L/N-kun. I'm fine."
"Hmm... Okay."
'...Why do you make me feel this way? ...Baka.'
Near the front, Yotsuba sat up slightly and turned around to face Fuutarou.
"Welcome, Uesugi-san. How's the ride?"
"It's great! Really spongy!" He exclaimed. Fuutarou was never used to such luxury.
Yotsuba smiled brightly. 'Just you watch, Uesugi-san! I'll make these three days an unforgettable experience for you!' "Alright, then... Let's goooo!"
"Yeah!" Y/N yelled in excitement, thrusting his fist up into the air with Yotsuba.
Itsuki looked at the glasses wearing teen with slight annoyance. "...You're too loud, L/N-kun. Tone it down a bit."
He laughed sheepishly. "Sorry, Nakano-san."
With each person embracing their own thoughts and feelings, the unforgettable field trip begins.
---
Sorry if this chapter is much shorter than usual. I was really running out of ideas to how to go about this one.
In any case, I also apologize for not updating this book for a few months. Had been busy with other stuff while also having brain farts on how to write this, and also finishing up the AGK book (which is now done). Uploads will resume as usual as I do have a rough idea on how I want the Test of Courage to go and the rest of these field trip chapters.
Other than that, I hope you all enjoyed this chapter. Many thanks for your patience.
Until then.
