Chapter 54

"Can I kiss you?"

Janus felt his breath catch in his throat. He swallowed, suddenly not able to look away from Remus. "Wh-What?"

Remus looked down with a small, silent laugh. "Sorry." He said. His face burned red. "I just... I just thought-"

Janus tilted Remus' head up and kissed him. Remus froze slightly and at the back of his mind, Janus wondered if it had been a mistake. He started pulling away slowly but Remus cupped his face quickly, kissing him back firmly.

Janus' heart felt like it was going to beat right out of his chest. Because he was kissing Remus and Remus was kissing him back! One of Remus' hands slid slowly into Janus hair, as if he was testing the waters. When Janus didn't pull away, Remus grabbed a handful of his hair gently, winding it around his fingers. Janus couldn't help the small, contented sigh that escaped him.

Remus grinned against Janus' lips and Janus was sure his heart was going to explode. Remus pulled back slowly, leaning his forehead against Janus'.

Neither of them said anything as they caught their breath. Remus laughed breathlessly and looked down bashfully.

"Can I take you out?" Janus asked. "Like, on a date."

"You're sure you want to?" Remus replied, still not looking up. Janus tilted his head up again.

"Definitely." He said, smiling gently. "I'm willing to take a chance, if you are."

As a reply, Remus leaned forward again and kissed him fiercely. Janus half-gasped into the kiss and pulled Remus closer, kissing him back just as passionately. He pulled Remus closer until Remus was practically in his lap and tangled a hand in his hair. Remus nipped Janus' bottom lip lightly, making Janus gasp again. With a grin, Remus kissed Janus again.

A cough from the door broke them apart.

"When you've quite finished," Roman said. He didn't look pleased. "Me and Re have to get home."

Remus rolled his eyes and detached one arm from around Janus' shoulder to flip Roman off. Janus pressed a gentle kiss to Remus' lips.

"Better go before Roman kills us both." He said quietly. "See you tomorrow? Five o'clock?"

Remus grinned. "Sure. Where?"

Janus shrugged. "I'll swing by yours and we'll see from there."

"Deal." Remus said. "See you then."

Remus got off Janus' lap and grabbed his bag, wiggling his fingers at Janus as he left. Thoughts of what his dad would do if he found out about Remus crossed Janus' mind but he pushed them away as he jumped off the desk.

He'd deal with his doubts about his dad another day. For now, it was time to relish the fact that he'd just kissed Remus and successfully asked him out!

Roman played with his bag strap as he and Remus walked down the corridor.

"I don't like him." He said eventually.

"And I don't like you." Remus bit back. "But I can't help that cause I'm stuck with you. You can at least tolerate Jan."

"He's not good, Re."

"Neither am I." Remus said. "Two wrongs make a right, Ro." He poked Roman in the forehead as he said this. "So I'd say we're pretty good for each other."

Roman rolled his eyes and silence bloomed between the two brothers. Remus shouldered his bag more comfortably.

"So?" He asked. "You ask your little props master out?"

Roman hesitated for a long space of time. "Yes." He said eventually. It was probably the quietest Remus had ever heard him.

"And?"

"And?!"

"And?" Remus egged. "What'd he say?"

Roman mumbled something unintelligible. Remus blinked at him.

"Huh?"

As an answer, the doors to the school burst open and Virgil came storming through.

"You didn't give me time to reply, asshole." He snapped. He crossed his arms and almost all the anger left his face. "Yeah, I'll see you next Sunday." He smirked at the astounded Roman.

"Seriously?!" Roman asked.

Virgil shrugged. "Yeah, course." He said. "You're an idiot but a tolerable one. I'll come 'round to yours cause if Issac sees you, he will not shut up about you." He laughed a little at Roman's cartoonish astonishment. "What?"

"I thought you'd say no!"

"Is that why you ran away?"

Remus snorted at this. "You ran away?!" He repeated. Roman glared at him and he laughed. "You, Roman Winston, biggest flirt in school aside from myself, ran away from a boy he'd just asked out?!"

"I got nervous, okay?" Roman all but whined. Virgil laughed almost adoringly.

"You're weird, Princey." He said. "Anyway, I gotta bounce but I'll see you next Sunday." With that and a wink, Virgil turned on his heel and left.

Remus snickered. "So... the racoon, huh?"

"Oh, shut up!"
