The Brain (ONLY CHAPTER)

Hi guys!! This is an assignment I had to do for a Psychology course I'm taking, and thought it'd be fun to let it be about Harry Potter. I asked if you wanted me to upload it, and you did!! I hope you don't find it that boring (it was hard to develop it as a story and not just a man vomiting brain stuff). I had to describe basic brain functions in a simplistic way (got 20/20 btw).

IMPORTANT: English isn't my native language. Please take that in consideration.

Harry Potter and Ronald Weasley were running down the halls of Hogwarts. Both were late to class, again. When they finally got to the Muggle Studies classroom, Harry knocked on the door and opened it slightly to see if the new teacher was there. Hermione Granger turned around and glared in their direction, making a quick small gesture asking them to enter the room. Just before either of them could move, a male voice boomed from behind them.

"Well, what do we have here??" both turned to see who the voice belonged to, a tall man in his mid-twenties with brownish hair and blue eyes. "Don't look at me like that, I'm no Hogwarts ghost. Just get in already."

Ron didn't have to be told twice, he walked quickly and sat down next to Hermione without hesitation. Harry rolled his eyes and took the seat next to Tracey Davis, a girl from Slytherin.

The man at the door entered the room and wrote a name on the chalkboard, Magnus Jay Addington.

"Hey guys, I'm Professor Addington. You may address me as Magnus if you want. Now, I know Professor McGonagall made this class obligatory after the war, but if you don't feel comfortable taking this subject you are allowed to stay in your common rooms writing an essay about why do you think you shouldn't be in this class." He paused for a brief moment, as if he were expecting someone to stand up. When no one did, he continued. "Okay then. Muggle Studies is about teaching us wizards how muggles are able to live without magic, but instead electricity, technology and science. Can anyone tell me what each one of them is?"

Hermione's hand shot upwards.

"Yes, Miss..."

"Hermione Granger. Electricity is a type of energy that can build up in one place. Muggles use it for lighting, cooking, transportation, and operating machinery and technology."

"Yeah! Also for watching movies and Tv and cool stuff" Seamus interrupted.

"Excellent Miss Granger and Mr. Finnigan, 10 points to Gryffindor. What about technology?"

Hermione's hand went up again, along with several others, but Professor Addington chose Dean Thomas to answer the question.

"It's the use of knowledge to invent new devices and tools that make muggle's lives easier."

"Exactly Mr. Thomas, 3 points to Gryffindor. And what is science?" Magnus looked at the faces of the students raising their hands; most of them were probably muggleborns, or even half-bloods, he wanted something different. His electric-blue eyes met with a pair of gray ones, the owner with a bored-to-death expression on his face. "What about you Mister...?"

"Malfoy. Draco Malfoy. Science is what muggles call the investigation of their surroundings." he said with a bored tone, looking away as if Magnus didn't deserve to be looked at.

"That's a surprisingly simplistic, yet accurate definition of the concept. Congratulations, Mr. Malfoy, 5 points to Slytherin."

Draco muttered something under his breath very similar to whatever. Magnus ignored his comment and continued with his class.

"So, for today's lesson we will be learning about muggle discoverments about the brain, using all three of the terms." He took out a small machine out of a bag that said Projector. "Now, this is a Muggle Projector that operates with magic. It'll help me show you some images and make the topic easier to understand."

Once the object was ready to go an image of the human brain appeared on the chalkboard.

"The brain is divided in three main zones," he flicked his wand and the image changed into a new one (shown below). "the hindbrain, the midbrain and the forebrain. Today we'll start with some general concepts about the forebrain, and in further lessons we'll get into detail."

"The first thing you see when you look at the brain is the cerebrum. See all those folds on the surface? They are convolutions."

"Eww. They look like worms!! So disgusting." Parvati Patil, from Gryffindor, cried.

Magnus let out a small chuckle. "Indeed Miss Patil, they are constantly compared to worms." He yet again flicked his wand (see image below). "There are four lobes on the cerebrum's surface, and they interpret information coming from our senses. Any suggestions on which one should we review first?"

Tacey Davis's hand flew into the air and Magnus gave her permission to speak. "We should start with the temporal lobes."

"Neat choice Miss Davis. May I ask why?"

"Well it's Slytherin green, duh." She brushed her hair off her shoulder and rolled her eyes, as if it were obvious information. A group of guys at the back of the room stood up and cheered loudly.

"Er...okay then. Guys, sit down please. Zabini, Nott." He gave the latter warning looks. Both reluctantly obeyed and after them, the rest did. "So, in this image we're viewing the brain from the right side. That means the temporal lobes would be placed right above both ears. They have to do with auditory information, emotion and helps a bit with memory."

Magnus walked closer to the chalkboard and used his wand to point the next lobe. "This one on the top of the head is the Parietal Lobe, it's what processes any things we feel. Can anyone tell me what do I mean with this? Mr. Longbottom?"

"Um... Emotions?"

"Not exactly Neville." He scanned the classroom. "Potter."

Harry, who had spent the class almost unnoticed, looked up. "Er... Pain, maybe?"

"Correct Harry, 3 points to Gryffindor. The parietal lobe controls things we feel with the sense of touch, such as temperature, pressure and pain." Magnus sat on his desk facing his students. "Now the red one at the rear, the occipital lobe. It processes everything you see."

Ron raised his hand. "And what about the frontal lobe? It must do something important, since it's so bloody large."

"That, Mr. Weasley, is what makes us human. It's what allows us to understand, think logically, and also coordinate information coming from our senses."

Parvati raised her hand and Magnus called on her. "But wasn't the hypothalamus the one that sent the information from our senses?"

"Interesting question Parvati. I think you mixed up the thalamus and the hypothalamus." He flicked his wand (image shown below). "The thalamus takes information from our sense to the cerebral cortex and back to the body through the spinal cord. The frontal lobe plays a part on the coordination and what to do with the information. The hypothalamus controls all our drives, such as hunger and thirst, and tries to maintain balance in the body. Any questions up to now?"

"What is the brain stem?" Theodore Nott inquired, looking at the image.

"The brainstem is like an automatic control centre for important involuntary actions, for example, the fact that you don't have to constantly think about breathing."

"What part of the brain fails when you get Alzheimer?" a Slytherin guy Harry didn't recognize asked. Magnus flicked his wand (image shown below).

"Well the hippocampus is the first part to be attacked. It processes our short-term memories into long-term ones. And it also has to do with facial recognition." the Slytherin guy nodded slightly, as if to show that Magnus answered all he wanted to know.

"Any other questions before we continue?" he nodded when no one raised his hand. "As many of may already know, the brain is divided in two hemispheres. Both of them have different functions; " Another flick of his wand and a rather interesting picture (shown below) appeared on the chalkboard. "the left hemisphere, as you may appreciate on the image, controls the logical and rational part of us. It also coordinates our language abilities and controls the right side of our bodies. The right hemisphere has to do with spatial activities, musical and artistic development and detecting and showing emotion. And also controls the left side of the body. Any questions so far?"

Magnus called on Blaise Zabini. "What holds both parts together?"

"A band of nerve fibers called corpus colossal or corpus callosum. It allows each hemisphere to know what the other one is doing." Magnus looked at a watch on his wrist. "Well I guess that'd be it for today. Next class we'll get into detail and review concepts learned today. Class dismissed".

Well, that was it...

I hope you enjoyed the learning, and if you did let me know with your comments and/or votes... It's free!!

*whispers and leans closer* You. Yes, you. If you by any chance know how to do nice covers and want to help me do one for this one-shot thingy, I'll dedicate it to you and read one of your stories (if you have one). I'd REALLY appreciate it.

*speaks normal again* I love you guys and I'm here for whatever you may need.

XOXO,
