23: succulents

The first person I saw when I woke up was Arlo laying on his blown up mattress in my living room, gazing at a tiny potted cactus in his large palm.

"You know how I'm an animal whisperer right?" Arlo spoke up when he saw me, green eyes still concentrated on the little plant in his grasp as I combed my fingers through my wet hair, about to leave for work.

"Sure." I said, not really knowing actually but letting him continue as his brows furrowed when he looked at me with an enlightened expression.

"I think I'm like, a plant whisperer too..." He sluggishly trailed off with squinted eyes, nodding his head slowly as I gradually nodded along with him, not knowing what he was saying as I grabbed my bag.

We locked gazes for a moment across the room as I let his words settle in.

"I'm gonna go now..." I pointed at the door, the keys in my hand jingling in the silent room.

"Alright, make sure you do it before you leave." Arlo reminded me with a dimpled, carefree grin as my shoulders slumped.

"I really have to go-"

"Here I'll help." Arlo insisted with an enthusiastic smile, rising from his mattress before approaching me, placing his little cactus down and facing me.

I raised my arms with a tired face, standing completely still as he circled his own arms around me, creating a circle where my body fit through as he hovered his arms up and down over me like a scanner before lifting them off and sway from my frame.

"I am now holding all your positive energy." Arlo calmly stated, cradling the air as if there was some invisible force in his arms, which to him there probably was before I lowered my limbs and grabbed the doorknob to my front door.

"Okay, have fun with it." I turned the knob.

"You sure you don't want to take some with you for the road?" Arlo asked with a tilt of his head, a few curls of brown hair escaping his fedora.

"I like to keep all the negative out, positive in." I quickly made an excuse as he simply nodded.

"Cool cool. Just letting you know I have your positivity when you need it after seeing what's outside." He casually let me know, completely oblivious to how ominous his statement just sounded as I furrowed my brows, watching him walk away grabbing his little cactus but still looking like he was cradling my "energy" around before I glanced back at my front door.

When I exited out of my flat I almost stepped flip flop first into a clutter of exotic mini potted cacti right at my door, bright pink flowers sprouting at the top of a few as I blinked down at them, surprised only to look around to find the entire hallway filled with a bunch of cacti, small and big and succulent plants while a crew of delivery men brought up even more.

"Does this cost money because if it does I never ordered these." I quickly said, pushing myself off the door and struggling to maneuver past all the plants, not wanting to prick myself or ruin them since they actually all looked incredibly beautiful and cute before I approached one of the delivery men in his khaki shorts and ashy knees.

"Ah, no they been paid for. You Vee by any chance?" The latino man asked, black chest hair peeking out from his broad chest with a single, thin, gold chain adorning his neck as I looked around the succulent garden covered hallway in a mixture of awe and anger.

That nickname.

"I mean, that could be anybody-" I weakly began.

"Colored chica with a lot of tattoos and lesbian hair." The delivery guy cut me off.

He gave me a quick, observational once over.

"Fuck." I muttered.

"The guy who hired us ordered like a truck load of these desert plants here for ju. Oh, he also told me to read you this message, lemme just..." The man raised his pointer finger, signaling for me to wait as he rummaged through his back pocket while I rubbed at my temples, closing my eyes and groaning to myself at how problematic one rich boy could be.

"Here," Delivery guy licked his chapped lips before reading the small sticky note in front of him.

"Juan Arnaldo Alexander Vega I will never suck your dry balls anymore-" He began before my eyes snapped open and I stopped him.

"I don't have balls." I informed, my hands still at my temples before the man blinked down at the paper in realization.

"Oh wait, wait that was a note left on my lunch from my wife -wait." He said with no hint of shame as he checked his other pocket, producing another new note this time.

"Alright dis one.. uh... he wrote three things for me to let you know... says here, numero uno, 'I got you a bunch of succulent plants and cacti because I remember you telling Ethan you liked them better than flowers when I pretended not to be listening.'" The guy read off what Harry wrote, keeping the piece of paper far away from him so his overused, squinted eyes could see as I sighed.

He flickered his gaze up to me.

"I think he was listening-"

"Yeah. Yeah I think he was too." I responded with a completely done expression, nodding and sucking my lips in before the delivery man continued with a clear of his throat.

"Numero dos, 'If ju ignore my call in the next forty seconds after the delivery guy reads this I hope you shove all the cacti I bought you up your ass.'" The guy finished, eyes going back up to mine with raised brows, as if preparing for me to be offended while I just stood there.

"His words not mine," He quickly added, innocently pointing at himself as I sent him an understanding nod.

"What was the third one?" I asked, eyes zeroing in on the paper as I crossed my arms over my chest, waiting.

The guy checked it.

"Uh, numero tres, 'Emphasize numero dos.'" He read out loud.

"So does that mean I should read number two to you again or..." He trailed of questioningly before I lowered my face into my hands in utter irritation when my Nokia phone suddenly rang in my pocket.

I retrieved it without even so much as looking at the caller ID, angrily flipping it open before handing it over to the delivery guy.

He gave me a look, pointing at himself before I urged the device to him.

"I'm too mad to even talk to him right now." I whispered through clenched teeth as he hesitantly took the phone from me, slowly bringing it to his ear with wide eyes while I crossed my arms over my chest again, inhaling slowly to calm my temper.

"'Ello." The man greeted over the phone.

"No, this is Juan." He continued, looking over at me as I heard Harry's small, muffled voice from my cell Juan was holding to his ear.

"Yes, yes she's here." He said after a few moments as I looked away, glaring at the wall in irritation.

"Yeah, yeah she looks mad." Juan informed as he observed me.

"Yeah she is glaring at nothing with her arms crossed. You very good at guessing señor." Juan complimented in awe as I quickly dropped my arms and snapped my gaze away from the wall to him in fury at how well Harry knew me as I heard the sound of his laughter through my Nokia.

"Tell him he needs to take all of this back." I firmly demanded in a low voice.

"She said she don't want none of these plants señor." Juan messaged into the phone.

"Uh-huh, okeh, okeh, uh-huh." He nodded his head before turning back to me.

"He said he trying to uh- to eat you right- oh my bad treat you. Treat you right." Juan corrected before pausing when Harry began talking again over the phone.

"Or both." Juan added before I gave him a look.

"Yeah, she is glaring at me now." Juan said into the phone, keeping eye contact with me.

"Ju want to do what to her now? Señor no I can't say that, you so dirty..." Juan snickered, slyly giggling like a tickled teenage girl before I rolled my eyes to the ceiling in annoyance as I grabbed the phone out of his hand.

"You need to take all of these plants back." I spoke into the device at my ear.

"So I don't get a thank you for all of this-"

Harry's voice cut off when I ended the call, angrily closing my flip phone and slipping it back into my pockets.

"I need you to take all of these back please." I requested, bringing my hands to my hair as my eyes traveled over all the green in the corridor.

"I'm sorry señorita but I can't do that." Juan apologized with a remorseful look as I sent him a raised brow.

"Why? Did Harry specifically order you not to?"

"No is just, there's so many stairs... and it took so long..." Juan blew out a breath, gesturing towards the staircase as I closed my eyes, slowly inhaling before I calmed myself.

"Okay you know what, you're right, you're right you just brought these.. um, I have to go to work and I'll let Harry know about this whole mix up, I'll even put these plants back when I get back if that has to happen, I just, I have to go." I quickly dismissed the topic, wanting to move on as I opened my eyes and slowly walked through the hall, careful not to hit or knock over any plant.

My feet were practically stomping down the steps, my mind to preoccupied to use the elevator as I went down each flight, knowing I was too angered to stand and wait in a fucking elevator.

When I got to the garage of the building I kicked off my flip flops and put on my shoes, opening the garage and getting on my motorcycle, situating the helmet on my head.

The moment I arrived at my dad's mechanic shop I all but kicked the hell out of the stand for my motorcycle outside before storming into the run down, chipped store, the smell of oil and rubber in the thick air with the sounds of tools and drills in the background.

"There you are, where've you been? There's this super rich customer from the valleys waiting for you." My father rushed to my side, walking around the counter where he was manning the cash register as I shrugged my jean jacket off, tossing it on one of the chairs nearby.

"Sorry Pa, I'll get to him soon I just- wait. Super rich." I sharply turned, stopping in my tracks altogether to meet my dad's brown eyes that were exactly like mine.

"Uh. Yes, said he only wanted to see you." My dad gave me a look.

"From the valley." I checked.

"Oh yeah, definitely from the valley. Brought in some fancy sports car with a broken engine, strange since it looks brand new-"

"This guy, did he have green eyes? Really well groomed, like so nicely put together he's got a kind of gay vibe?" I wanted to make sure just one more time before I heard his arrogant voice fill the air causing me and my dad to look over at the khaki short wearing guy that's been giving me shit.

"Now is that any way to treat your customers." Harry made a face, leaning his elbow on the wall as I glared at him from across the room.

I went over to the tool box near my work station, Harry watching me with a sly, collected grin before I grabbed the metal wench, his grin immediatly dropping as my dad quickly intervened to stop me from advancing forward.

"Woah, woah, woah!" Harry panicked, pointing at me and slowly backing as I tried to move past my dad who grabbed the large, heavy tool from my grasp.

"What is your problem mija?" Dad exclaimed in confusion, keeping the potential weapon away from me before I furiously pointed at Harry over my dad's shoulder.

"Him, he's my problem!" I snapped, finally moving past my dad, grabbing the wrench and calmly walking over to Harry whose eyes widened in alarm as he frantically ran away from me, running around the shop, mechanics pausing to stare at us as I followed behind him with sturdy strides.

I had to be stopped by my dad and three other men, physically being held back while Harry pressed himself against the corner of the shop like a frightened animal for me to finally calm down.

"All I want is for my car to be fixed." Harry spoke up when my dad had convinced me to look at Harry's car due to the amount of money that rich boy was willing to pay for a repair.

"And you traveled all the way across town to do so?" I responded in an uninterested tone, distracted with the open hood of his car, narrowing my eyes at the damage before glancing up at Harry who was conversing with his butler Bennet.

"It's funny, the engine looks like it's been beated down actually, like by a bat." I brought up, tossing the dirtied rag over my shoulder with an unconvinced expression.

"How strange, isn't that strange Bennet?" Harry rubbed at his sharp jawline with a furrow of his brows, mocking a look of innocence.

"Quite strange master Harold." Bennet agreed in a casual tone.

I brought my gaze up just in time to find Harry and Bennet subtly fist bump one another, Harry biting his lip to keep from grinning as the two calmly stared back at me before I straightened.

Harry and I made eye contact, the both of us knowing what he did, not looking away from one another before I released a small sigh of defeat, rubbing at my forehead.

"Alright, the good thing is that it's just the engine and with your pay we can get another one, if it was an external damage of the car that would have taken longer-" I began to explain, turning around to retrieve one of my tools before the abrupt sound of glass breaking made me look back, finding Harry skillfully spinning a bat in his grasp, his tinted car window completely shattered while he whistled an unbothered tune.

My temper only grew.

"So what's that, like, another few days extra to see you." Harry's voice was cut off when I advanced forward and grabbed the sweater around his neck, backing him and violently pinning him to the wall, a pleased, dimpled smirk spreading across his face as the tips of our noses brushed.

"I see your ghetto is showing." He mused with obvious enjoyment.

"Why are you trying to piss me off." I seethed under my breath.

"It's the only way you'll pay attention to me." Harry reasoned, a goofy smile still on his face before I pressed my lips in a firm line, pushing him back and releasing him.

"Give me that bat you crazy..." I muttered to myself in irritation, taking the bat from him as I continued to grumble to myself, placing it down on my work table.

"I heard you're going to be Ethan's date to my Halloween party tomorrow night." Harry began in an investigational tone as I prepped my tools.

"Yes, he wants to be around Polly as much as he can, even if he's just a friend to her but he doesn't want to go alone. If I wasn't his support I wouldn't be going. I'd be finishing up work and bills instead." I explained, avoiding his gaze.

"You know I went through a lot of connections for security to let you and Ethan back in our neighborhood, for all those cacti I got you and still not a single thank you, just ask Bennet he knows how hard I've worked just to get you to talk to me, right Bennet?" Harry reasoned, gesturing over to his butler who was staring off into space, earphones plugged into his ears.

We both looked at him, finally catching his attention as the sixty something year old man took off one earphone like a bothered teenager.

"I'm sorry what." Bennet blinked.

"Okay you see this is why we're having communication problems in our relationship." Harry said, gesturing between himself and Bennet who still looked completely lost.

"You know it won't be bad, there's actually going to be a charity fund there, a quick fun bid to better kid's education in third world countries, a good cause." He insisted, bringing his green eyes back to me.

"Did you think of that?" I asked.

"Ben helped me out, when we sat down and talked about his own college education." Harry explained and for the first time that day, I genuinely smiled.

"Ah, the waiter you yelled at." I reminded him as he noticed the minuscule grin on his face, causing a smile of his own to grow across his lips in response.

"The waiter who forgave me, and who I'm paying for his tuition." Harry lowly shot back, nearing me.

"It'll be nice seeing you at the party, it won't be so bad." He kept saying as I slowly exhaled with an unconvinced expression.

"I'm assuming Polly's your date." I said, locking my gaze with his as he blinked, not expecting me to say that before the smile on his face dropped altogether and he cleared his throat.

"Yeah but-"

"If I have to go to a party to see the guy I like and I know likes me back with another girl," I began, taking a step forward, our chests touching as I let him see the vulnerability in my eyes, only for a moment.

"Then it will be bad." I told Harry, watching him keep his mouth shut in defeat, his adam's apple rising and falling in a small remorseful gulp while we kept eye contact.

"See, this is why I plug up because you two do these whole intense moments with each other and I'm just here not knowing what to do with myself." Bennet sighed, pursuing his wrinkly lips and placing his earphones back in as we looked over at him and his calm, stoic face.

We then heard heavy metal blast through his earphones.
