Chapter Thirteen: Luminary of the Stars

I hope Ouma is okay...I honestly never known someone who tried to commit suicide before...much less more than once.

I wonder if he is getting proper treatment and help...maybe I should call my other uncle...I'm sure they would be willing to at least recommend someone for him to talk to...

The thing is though...is he going to keep talking? I never even heard his voice and Momota claims it was the first time in years, was it some kind of trauma that kept him silent for so long?

Or was it something deeper than that? Or both, I honestly can't tell...maybe I should read on psychology to try and understand more about Ouma.

And I can do some research as to events that happened where apparently something happened to him? I mean if it was big enough maybe there is some kind of report or mention of it. Or I can ask my uncle, he does run the detective agency of this town, or...no I shouldn't ask her. She has really bad memories of those years.

It's so weird seeing her as she is now...and every day she just locks herself in her room and never comes out except for work...I really hope she doesn't turn out like Ouma.

I noticed Ouma and his Mother getting out of a car and her heading angrily into the school and Ouma just sitting there.

I walked up next to him "hey Ouma, what's going on?" I asked and he looked down 'she is complaining to the principal' he signed I raised an eyebrow "about what?" And he seemed to clench his fist tightly.

'About those kids who are bullying me' he finally signed and my eyes widened as I gave him a look over recognising the damage done to the chair and some bandages on him.

"Was that done by the bullies?" I asked and he nodded 'they are from some people I used to mess with a lot, now the tables have turned...I deserve it...'

He used to mess with people? That seems so out of character...and I'm surprised with how much he is signing right now, usually he just says nothing and makes an occasional comment.

Is this because he knows I saw him yesterday?

"You don't deserve to be hurt or bullied" I told him and I noticed there being some tears in his eyes.

"Y-Your...w-wrong" I heard a voice suddenly. It was cracky and hoarse, as if it hasn't been used in a long time. To be honest it sounded like a dying animal as I turned to Ouma in shock.

Is THAT his voice? It must be out of shape from being unused for so long...

"Did you just talk?" I asked abuptly not even taking in how sad he seemed to be wrong.

'It was my fault, all my fault' he kept signing over and over again when I grabbed his hands "stop" I said calmly.

Ouma paused as I took a deep breath"Ouma, I will admit that I know nothing about who you used to be before what may have happened to you...what I do know about this is it probably wasn't your fault so stop beating yourself up about it" his eyes met mine and I smiled though I know he couldn't see it.

"Sorry never been good at this whole conforting thing...but, I know we just met...but I want to become someone you can depend on to" Ouma didn't reply but that might have been because I was still holding onto his hands.

"Kokichi I'm back- who is this?" A women asked. I turned around and let go of his hands. She was a short women with Ouma's hair and eye color and pale skin though nothing like Ouma's, she also had deep bags under her eyes and visible scars on her arms and body.

"Oh, my name is Shuichi Saihara, I'm one of Ouma's classmates" I said and she gave me a once over.

"Are you one of them?" I raised an eyebrow "what?" I asked and her eyes narrowed "are you one of those b*stards that hurt my son?" She asked and I shook my head.

"No ma'am" and I saw Ouma sign 'he isn't involved' and the women sighed in relief "sorry, these past few years have been...stressful" she admitted "I can't even believe I didn't notice that he was getting bullied...you don't look familar, I used to volunteer for Ouma's class a lot, I'm his mother Kokoro Ouma" and I shook her hand.

"I'm sorry to cut this short but I need to go to work, I have a strict schedule and I am really pushing it being here sadly, thank you for being a good peer to Ouma" she said and looked at Ouma hesitantly before sqeezing his hand a little and I could tell he was tense as she looked down sadly before getting in the car and driving away.

"You were shaking when your Mother held your hand" I told him "why?" I asked and Ouma didn't respond for a while.

'Some bad memories that haven't gone away' they signed simply before heading to the building and I walked beside him.

As we walked I noticed kids whispering and some pointing and laughing and Ouma just stopping as I noticed them.

Those are the bullies... I then covered Ouma's ears he flinched and shaked heavily before I let go.

He won't let anyone touch him..."you don't have to listen, I'll take you to class I promise" I told him. He hesitated but he reached up to cover his ears himself. So he trusts me a little, that's nice. I then grabbed his chairs handles and helped him up the stairs and he didn't even remove his hands at all till I tapped him on the shoulder.

"We're here" I said and he uncovered them and my eyes widened.

A giant sign was hanging over the blackboard.

Goodbye Kaito! Get well soon!

I quickly looked around the room, the teacher was already there not saying anything as all the students were in the corner and Momota standing their awkwardly.

"Aw, you guys didn't need to do this" he said humbly and Harukawa was seen in tears "of course we had to, your moving...and...and I might not get to-" she started and Momota hugged her "ah Maki roll of course I'm coming back! Just you wait I'll be back to normal in a week" he said confidently.

"I'll use my maaagic to heal you" Yumeno said and I stepped in "what's going on?" I asked and Momota looked down sad.

"Oh, uh...well I'm going away for a while, I actually have to go in ten minutes" my eyes widened.

"What?!" I asked and he nodded "yeah I got sick, and I need to move to get proper treatment" he said "don't worry I am not going to let this kill me" he said smiling.

"It can kill you?!" I screamed and Momota nodded "yeah it's been getting pretty bad, started maybe two years ago, I honestly can't believe I didn't tell anyone till now" Harukawa looked down sad.

"But...what about Ouma?" I asked and he looked down "yeah...I know...so I'm going to trust and believe in you all to take care of him!" He said.

"What? But I don't think I can-" I started "sure you can! Just believe in yourself" and he grinned.

But what if we lose him because your not there to stop him anymore...

Momita then walked up to Ouma who I had forgotten was behind me and seemed to be panicking as they gripped their hair in terror.

"Hey buddy, don't worry I'm coming back" he said and Ouma shook his head over and over again 'no you won't, they never do' and I looked down sad.

Momota seemed to understand what they had signed and gave them a pat on the shoulder "don't worry, I promise, your my sidekick and I'm going to keep my promise, so stop crying! That goes for you to Maki Roll" he said as Harukawa ran up to him hugging him tightly.

Momota just looked at the teacher and they exchanged a long look along with him casting a look at all the desks.

"Thank you, for teaching me and all the other's" he said bowing a bit and the teacher just looked at him with tears in their eyes.

Momota then just waved goodbye as he headed out and gave one more smile to Harukawa "hey Maki Roll, I'm still yours right?" And she nodded wiping her tears and he nodded and left the classroom.

Now the hollow room was even more cold and distant as the chair of the luminary of the stars stayed empty all class.
