The City and the Church

"Hello? Young man?" I heard a man's voice.

I opened my eyes. It was the farmer. I looked around only to be surrounded by an entire city. This was Dominum. The high buildings, big houses, and the gigantic cathedrals definitely proved it. I got up and stepped out of the wagon.

"We have reached your stop." he said.

"Gratias tibi tanta domine! You were a great help. Now I will be able to see my mother again. I can't thank you enough." I shouted happily.

"Gratias. Your welcome. Wish your mother the best for me. I hope she recovers soon." he said waving to me.

I ran off in another direction. The city was amazing. Of course, exploring it was a bit hard. It was beginning to get dark. Soon the guards would be out in the street looking out for people who had disobeyed curfew. I could hear them ringing the bells signaling that it was their curfew. It was coming from the cathedral only a few feet away from me. The doors were unlocked so I ran inside. I'm sure I could stay here the night. I walked in. The church was gigantic. It had to have been the largest church I had ever seen. I looked straight ahead of me. There stood a golden altar with a cross standing tall directly in front of it. Suddenly, I heard someone cough. It was coming from the front of the church. I hid behind a pillar, peeking out. There was a man up by the altar. Did I miss him? No. He must have came in when I was looking elsewhere. He was wearing long green robes. I knew who he was. He must have been a priest in the church. He began praying with a crucifix in his hand. I tried to step forward to get a better look at the man. Suddenly, my foot slipped on the polished floor. My boot squeaked across. His eyes darted straight toward the pillar I was hiding behind.

"Who's there?" he asked.

I stopped moving, trying to slow my heavy breathing. He knew I was there. He never even took his eyes off of the pillar. He knew I was there. There was no point in hiding anymore. I could hear his footsteps coming toward me so I decided to come out. The moment our eyes met each other, our eyes widened. I recognized him and he recognized me. He was the one. The one I had seen at the morgue. He knew me just as well. He took a step back.

"D-Daemonium habes! D-Demon! How dare you come in this holy place! This is no place for your kind! Begone, foul demon!" he yelled, pointing at me.

I could hear people begin to stir in the church. Footsteps were coming closer behind closed doors and faint yelling coming from every direction. Oh no. This man accusing me of being a demon in a church. He's being too loud. I began to worry. I had to escape the church and hope that no one caught. Bang! Two doors opened on the left side of the church and in came at least five men. They looked toward the priest, following his pointing hand, and then toward me. The priest kept shouting demon! Demon! I'm no demon! Why are you calling me that! I'm afraid! I don't like this! The men started coming toward me. My only chance was to ran back out the doors I had come in at the back of the church. They were taller than I was but I was faster. One man grabbed my wrist trying to trap me in his grip. Luckily, my wrist was quite small and I was able to slip free. Past the doors and down the dark, dim lit streets I ran. I had to find somewhere to hide. The only place at the moment to hide was a pitch black alley way. I didn't know what was down there but I didn't care at this point either. I didn't want to die by their hands. I ran in, not being able to see anything. I could feel the bricks of a house wall and followed it until I ran into another wall, hiding myself in a corner. I watched as the men ran past the alley. I couldn't hide here forever. When daylight came, everyone would be able to see me and they would find me. This wouldn't be the first time something like this happened but it was torture every time it did. I can't even remember a time when it wasn't like this. Each day is basically a fight for my life, the one that I would lose within seven days and regain it only to have the cycle begin again. I felt a tear roll down my face. Why am I crying? Then I noticed, it wasn't a tear. It was rain. I stood up hoping to find a place where it wasn't so cold and wet. Maybe there was something I could stand under to stay dry. I felt along the wall trying to find my way out until I tripped on a step and fell into a puddle. Why is there a step here? Suddenly, I was able to see my hands. It's not getting light out already is it? I looked up and immediately froze. It was a man with a lantern in his hand.

"Oh, dear boy. What are you doing out in the pouring rain? You must be freezing. The Lord has been good this night for allowing me to cross paths with you. Come, come. Inside." the man said, reaching to a section of the wall.

There was a door there. That explained the steps that were there. After opening the door, he extended his arm offering to help me up.

"Tibi gratias agam. Thank you." I said, accepting his help.
