Her

My thoughts kept me awake for most of the night. I got at least a full hour of sleep. I was awake when he got up. He came out dressed in nice attire. He looked perfect as if he had never even went to bed. No bed hair, messed up clothes, nothing really. He said good morning and even made me food for breakfast. I wasn't used to that.

"Excuse me?" I said.

He looked away from the stove and over at me.

"What should I call you? What is your name?" I asked.

"Ah. My name is Victor Godfrey but as of yesterday, you are my son. Therefore, you will have to address me otherwise rather than using Victor. However, when in public, you should refer to me as Father Godfrey. I am one of the priests in the church, you know?" he laughed.

I nodded. Father Godfrey. Victor Godfrey. What an odd name. It sounds foreign. He must not be from this country. I should have figured that out by his accent. I watched as he cleaned up the plates after we were done and he washed those. Soon, we were off to the woman he called Angelina. I had to wear a cloak. Luckily, no one seemed to notice me and we had made it through the town safely. The next thing I knew, we were standing in front of a hair stylist. She had long blonde hair and bright blue eyes. They almost looked as if they weren't real. They mesmerizing.

"Hello, Father. What brings you in today?" she said cheerfully.

"Ah, Angelina. I have come with a favor to ask of you. Can we talk about it in private?" Godfrey said.

Angelina seemed confused at first and then stared directly at me. Then, she nodded and led us into a back room where Father Godfrey had begun to explain our situation.

"We can't let the authorities catch him." he said.

"I suppose not but what is so important about this boy? I'm quite sure he isn't from around here." she pulled my hood back and inspected me.

Father Godfrey's expression went serious when he heard this.

"This boy is my son." he said, calmly.

Angelina's eyes widened. She was probably wondering where I had suddenly popped up from. A random boy appearing in the town out of no where, causing a stir without even staying more than a few hours. She sighed and told me to sit in a chair that was located next to a mirror only a few feet away from me. I obeyed. I had no idea what she was going to do but I felt like I had to trust them for some reason. Angelina grabbed some powder and began putting it on my face. I coughed and pushed it away.

"What are you doing?!" I yelled.

I knew what that powder was for. Only woman and nobles wore that. It was disgusting.

"Just relax. I'll be done before you know it." she said.

I waited for two long hours. I had been told to change into different outfits and to turn this way and that. I hated the make-up that the so called angel had put on my face. It felt sticky and gross. When she was done, I immediately ran to the mirror to see. I was wearing a girl's dress. It was dark blue with white pearls lining the skirt and had a petticoat under it. I couldn't understand how girls wore this stuff. It was far too hot. My eyelashes seemed as if they grew an entire inch and certainly looked darker. I also had light pink lipstick on. I hated that the most. It tasted terrible. I didn't try to taste it but it just gets in your mouth somehow. My nails were painted a dark blue to match my dress as well. Finally the last thing was a wig. A long brown wig that finished off my girly look. It was curled and put into a bun. I wanted to scream at first but then I thought it through. This would help me a lot more than it would hurt me to do it. I am completely unrecognizable. There's no way they would catch me.

"Thank you so much Angelina. No one could do any better than you. You are the best!" Father Godfrey said.

"Of course. It is my job." she smiled.

Father Godfrey handed her a large amount of money for everything and she happily accepted. They chatted for about a half hour which I didn't mind. It was cooler in the shop than it was outside and with this many layers, it felt like I was dressed for winter. I started to hear them talk about how busy Father would be today. It sounded like I had to go with him as well. Angelina also noted that I needed a name. Together, the two of them came up with the name Lizzy. I didn't mind it. Soon, they said goodbye and Father Godfrey began telling me what he had planned next.

"Remember, Daniel," he said quietly, "You're going to have to act the part to. The makeup and clothes do help but it's not enough if you keep acting like a boy. Anyway, we have to go to the church now."

The church? I guess this would be the best time to test out my disguise. I already knew how to act like a girl too. It was pretty easy. For as long as I have been around, I was taught everything there is to know about being proper.

"There is the daughter of a noble waiting for us there," Father Godfrey went on, " I give her private lessons every week, teaching her more about religion and such. I have to bring you with me though. Do you think you will be able to handle it? You will have to act friendly with her. Who knows. Maybe you two can become friends. You should join in the lesson as well."

I nodded and followed. As we neared the church, I began to sweat. I was scared and nervous. This was the same place I had just run from only last night. They wanted to kill me. If they caught me now, I wouldn't be able to escape dressed like this. Father Godfrey opened up the door for me. As we walked down the hall into another room, everyone stared. I could hear them whispering too. I also recognized some of the men from last night. I didn't make eye contact with any of them. Instead, I stared straight ahead paying attention to where Father Godfrey was leading me. As he opened the last door, I could see a girl standing in there, staring at the books that lined the walls.

"Aria? It's time for our lesson. Are you prepared?" Godfrey asked, kindly.

At the call of her name, she turned around. Her blonde hair had blown about as she turned quickly toward us. Her beautiful blue eyes had met mine and I could feel my face getting hot. I must have been blushing which I tried to act normal about. Her skin was fair. She was dressed in finery just as I was. Aria was the most beautiful girl I had ever seen.

"Yes, Father." she said.

Oh her voice! It was so soft and soothing. Everything about her seemed to be perfect. She kept staring at me. Father Godfrey noticed and after a few awkward seconds of her studying me, he cut in.

"Ah. I forgot Aria. I apologize. This is my daughter Lizzy. She will be joining in our lesson. Is that alright with you?" he asked her.

She nodded shyly.

I blushed immensely. It must have been noticeable. My face felt like it was on fire. She was the perfect definition of beauty.

"It's nice to meet you Aria." I said in a higher voice than usual.

"It's very nice to meet you too, Lizzy. Your dress is so beautiful by the way." she giggled.

L...Lizzy?

Oh yeah. I had forgotten. I was a girl now.... or... I was supposed to be. I had to play the part. I couldn't be a head over heels lover boy, as much as I wanted to be.

"Gratias Tibi! Thank you!" I exclaimed.

"Lizzy!"

Father Godfrey had raised his voice from across the room.

My head immediately popped up, "Yes Father?"

"As much as I encourage socializing, I would recommend you take your seat. You as well Aria. We have to go over the ten commandments again today and you must prove you understand them. Does that sound simple enough Aria?" he asked.

Aria nodded, her golden curls bouncing about her shoulders. Father Godfrey didn't make me do any of the work luckily. I was no where near her level or his expertise. Religion wasn't necessarily my strong suit. Yes, I will admit, I was quite familiar with the Catholic religion, but I didn't remember much of it. I listened to Aria's beautiful voice reciting all ten of the commandments and explaining the importance of each one; however, I didn't listen to the words really. Just the simple sound of her smooth and soft voice was enough for me. She was perfect. She was... To me.
