A New Beginning

Everything was hazy from the fall.

There was a noise, and Adolf couldn't exactly tell what it was; it echoed painfully in his head.

A voice?

The wind?

"Poke."

Adolf jolted; was that a finger that touched his cheek? He shakily pried his eyes open, groaning as he did, and his gaze fell upon a blurred figure that slowly came into focus. It was a concerned-looking high school girl who looked no older than the body he assumed he was in right now. She was concerned. He had to say something.

"Huh...?" he groggily managed as he sat up and rubbed his pounding head.

The girl beamed at him, "Oh, thank goodness you're awake!"

"...Huh?" Adolf tried to catch his breath; his head was pounding so painfully...

"I don't think we've met before," the girl continued. "I'm Kukuri Yukizome. What's your name...?"

Adolf paused. 'Should I give her my real name?' He supposed there was no harm in doing so; this girl wouldn't recognize the name anyway. And even if she did, she might be able to help his situation.

"Adolf K. Weissman. But you can call me Adi."

Kukuri clasped her hands together, grinning, "Adi! I like it!" Adolf smiled softly; this girl was so happy. It made his heart soar.

"So what were you doing on the roof?"

Adolf grimaced internally—should he tell her the truth? He could explain it vaguely. Or he could lie. At the same time, she could potentially help his situation if he told her the full truth. On the other hand, if he decided to tell her, she might go telling everyone, and that would bring the Colorless King to his location.

That would cause some problems, because as long as the Colorless King thought he was dead, he could work freely without fear of being targeted. While the Colorless King didn't have all his powers, his power was still superior to Adolf's currently limited ones. Besides, he could always tell her the truth later, but he could never take back the truth if he said it now.

What would a student who fell from the roof say?

Rubbing his neck sheepishly, he answered, "Screwing around." For effect, he added a sloppy bow to the end and mumbled an apology.

Kukuri narrowed her eyes at Adolf. "Don't do it again. You'll be in so much trouble when they find this hole. You know you should be participating in getting ready for the school festival."

Releasing a breath, Adolf silently thanked the heavens that he was such a skilled liar. "I know, I know, I'm sorry."

"Let's get you to the school nurse. Do you have your PDA?"

PDA? They need those here? Shoot, what would a student say?

"PDA? Hold on." He patted around on his body, searching for something he knew wasn't there. After checking in his pockets and coming up fruitless, he forced a nervous laugh. "I-Uh...Shoot, I must have lost it when I fell." 'She'll believe that, right?'

Kukuri seemed to believe it, answering, "Oh. Well, if you lost it when you fell, it's probably broken." Adolf nodded meekly. "Okay, we'll get you a new PDA, then get you to the nurse."

"Huh? That's strange," Kukuri muttered, going through the records in the student database.

"What's strange?" Adolf asked, sitting up a little straighter in his chair. They were in the computer lab, Kukuri going through student records so she could easily turn in the information for a new PDA.

"Your file isn't in here," Kukuri stated. "There's a Watanabe, and there's a Weiss...but no Weissman."

Adolf stiffened as suspicious eyes fell on him.

Kukuri narrowed her eyes at him, "You can't get a PDA if your information isn't in the student database."

Adolf could feel his heart start to beat faster. There wasn't really a way around this, was there? She knew the school much better than he did, so any lie he came up with would sound too fake. So he knew he'd have to respond honestly when he heard her ask—

"Who are you?"

I have not had a good night's sleep in god knows how long. Holy heck, m8 I am exhausted. My summer job requires me to get up at 4 a.m. every morning and work in a cornfield all day. So that's pretty fun. Luckily tomorrow's my last day :3 I am so flippin tired man.
