Chapter 1:

There comes your boyfriend.

~~~
"Who is excited?"
"For the school to start? Not me." Mikaela said, looking down so her peer students couldn't see her braces.
Rylee smiled, rubbing her hands together. It was the freshman year and she was going to make the most of these four high school years. It was going to awesome and filled with amazing memories.
She turned to Nina. "You excited?"
Nina was super introvert, even after 5 years of friendship with Rylee and Mikaela she still couldn't speak much in front of them. So she just nodded and shrugged.
Rylee sighed looking at the two girls next to her. One was dressed in a jeans and a turtleneck that didn't match and one was dressed in high waist shorts and off shoulder top. With these two on her side how could she ever survive high school?
As they entered the campus, they could see a lot of familiar faces but also a lot of unfamiliar ones.
"Oh my God!" Mikaela exclaimed. "Is that Sven?"
All three pairs of eyes turned to see a boy surrounded with girls.
Rylee frowned in confusion. "What is happening? Where are his nerd glasses?"
Mikaela stomped her foot. "He got hot and I got braces. Just my luck." And with that she stomped away inside the campus.
Rylee and Nina took one glance at the suddenly fashionable and the not-so-lanky Sven before turning around and following Mikaela.
"If some other girl gets Sven, Mikaela is going to be so pissed." Rylee muttered to Nina.
Sven was Mikaela's childhood crush and the entire high school knew that, except probably Sven.
Nina nodded. "Yes, when do her braces get out?"
"Next year hopefully." Rylee answered.
"So one whole year of annoyance." Nina noted in a small voice.
They found Mikaela sulking in the cafeteria corner. They sat next to her going through their schedules.
"Who's that?" Nina suddenly asked, pointing at a tall thin boy who was sitting alone in the far end of the cafeteria reading a book that must be over 500 pages.
"He looks new." Mikaela answered. "And what is with that hairstyle? Is it the 90s again?"
Rylee stared at the stranger and suddenly felt a sense of pity for him. "Is he alone?"
"With that hairstyle? I am not surprised." Mikaela muttered.
Rylee ignored her. "He looks alone."
As if he could feel their gazes on him and hear their whispers, his head snapped up, directly meeting Rylee's. Rylee's eyes widened in shock and she instantly turned her head away in embarrassment. But that one gaze of grey smoldering eyes was enough to make her heart race drastically.
She lightly patted her chest, telling herself that it was the shock of getting caught staring that made her feel all tingly from the inside.
From the corner of her eyes, she dared to take another glance at the stranger, he had gone back to reading the book, completely unaffected. "I'll talk to him." Rylee said to her friends. "He looks alone, maybe we can be his friends."
After 3 years.
"Who is excited?"
"Can you stop asking that every year?" Mikaela grumbled, removing the gum from her mouth and sticking to someone's bike mirror.
"That's not nice." Nina said from next to her, her previous short dark chocolate hair had grown till the waist.
"Yes Miss. Goody-Two-Shoes." Mikaela mocked in a nasal voice.
Rylee rolled her eyes at their bickering, that was something that hadn't changed much over the years. It had only gotten worse. "At least you don't have braces anymore." Rylee pointed out.
"Thank God." Mikaela said, twirling the newly highlighted strand of red hair in her fingers. "It was the worst year."
They smiled at the familiar faces as they walked inside the school. A part of Rylee was glad to be back in high school, despite all the drama, assignments and unnecessary torture they had to endure every year.
"There comes your boyfriend." Nina said, pointing with her eyes at the hot boy that walked towards them.
He was dressed in light blue jeans and a white V-neck, his brown hair was all messy due to the wind and his perfectly aligned teeth shined as he smiled at the three girls.
"He is not my boyfriend." Rylee hissed at Nina just as Sven stopped in front of her.
"Hey Rylee."
Rylee smiled at Sven. She would be lying if she said she didn't think he was hot, he definitely was. In fact, he was voted as the second-hottest man in all high-school, which was considered a rather prestigious honor. "Hey Sven."
"First class?"
"Chemistry." Rylee groaned.
Sven winked at her. "Same. Let's go create some."
Mikaela scowled at them and pretended to puke at the words. "Keep it in your pants. Jeez. Its chemistry not biology." She rolled her eyes and walked away, her black boots clacking away.
"I have Algebra." Nina said. "I'll see you guys in the break." With that even she walked away, her flats making a squeaking sound.
Rylee smiled at Sven. "So how was the vacation?"
Sven shrugged as they waked towards their class. "Good, my dad got me a new bike."
Rylee resisted the urge to use sarcasm. Sven's father was extremely wealthy and he made it a point to let everyone know that at every chance he got. The latest iPhone in his hands was an accurate example. He wasn't using the phone but that didn't stop him from showing it off. If he had to wave he wouldn't use the free hand, he would wave with the iPhone hand so everyone could see it. "Great." Rylee chose to answer.
"How was yours?"
"Good. Pretty good." She lied.
They entered the class and sat on their desks, next to each other. Rylee wished there was someone else she was friendly with in this class too. But she usually kept to herself, which was a good idea considering the amount of back-stabbing and vicious people in her school. Her eyes ran over the students to find some pleasant faces and stopped at the face she had seen almost every day for the past three years.
He was still sitting in the far end corner, once again he was occupied reading a heavy book. His long fingers tapped against his chin, his eyebrows were furrowed and his eyes attentive. He seemed to be lost in the book, in another imaginative world... far far away from Rylee's.
But just like three years back, he felt that undeniable intense gaze once again.
Rylee almost jumped out of her skin as his eyes collided with hers again. The grey eyes curious and wary. But this time she didn't look away. And for a moment, time seems to slow down. It's as if everything else in the room has faded away, and it's just the two of them in their little bubble of connection.
Once again, she felt her heart skip a beat and then start to race. A faint blush coating her cheeks.
Unconsciously her palm rested over her heart wondering what the hell was happening. She was sitting next to one of the hottest guys in high school and yet she felt nothing but one emotionless gaze from this lonely weird guy and the zoo in her stomach wakes up to dance violently.
He was the first to look away. His eyes turned back to the book, completely unaffected, as if the last few seconds hadn't happened or even worse, hadn't affected him at all.
Rylee took one last glance at the symmetrical face of this secretive boy and turned her attention back to Sven's words about how his father was going to buy him a yacht if he passed the first set of tests.
'Yes, great, jump off of it then.' she thought to herself.
Taking a deep breath she swore to gather up the guts to talk to the properly combed black haired boy. In the last three years they hadn't exchanged a single word, mainly because no one talked to him and she didn't want be known as the weirdo who talked to the weirdo.
People in high school can be atrociously judgmental.
ut this year that going to change.
It was her last high school year and she did not want to leave with any regrets.
'Tomorrow.' She promised herself. 'Tomorrow I will talk to Aahan.'
