Voicemail of 25th December' 2010

01:36 p.m.

"Oh, straight to voicemail. Again."

He sighed into the phone.

"Anyways, I called to let you know that I'll be coming around to pick you up by 5."

As if expecting me to respond, he waited for a few seconds only to then realise that he was leaving a message in recording.

"Oh right. I'm leaving a voicemail. My bad,"

He cleared his throat.

"So I know you said that we could get ready for this together since that'd make sense but know that I really want this, okay? I really, really want to make this night as special as humanly possible."

He laughed into the phone; a warm laugh that caused my own lips to curve upwards, disregarding the sheer desperation of it all.

I sat in my bedroom with one hand holding the phone and the other playing with the hem of my shirt. I kept clenching and unclenching my free hand around the fabric of my shirt, afraid for it to start shaking if I were to leave it alone.

"So just bare me on this one, okay love? It's not every day that a guy like me gets to celebrate his first anniversary with the love of his life."

I could've bet that he was smiling at that moment had it not been for the sudden, horrible pounding in my head. Love of his life - and I couldn't even remember this man.

"Now I'll come by 5 and I expect you to be wearing that blue dress I left on the bed today morning and to be looking absolutely gorgeous in it - not that you're even capable of looking anything less. And don't waste your time fussing over the surprises of the evening. You'll love them, hopefully.

"Bubye, Ems. I can't wait to see you tonight. Love you."

I placed the phone on the bed beside me and wrapped my hands around my mouth, blowing through my lips and into them.

Anniversary he had said - one year anniversary. For one whole year at the least we had been dating, may be longer even.

I gasped into my hands and pushed back the tears that were blurring my vision.

How?

How could I not remember one single thing?
