chapter one
𝐒𝐄𝐋𝐈𝐍𝐄 𝐇𝐀𝐃 𝐇𝐎𝐏𝐄𝐃 𝐒𝐇𝐄 𝐌𝐀𝐃𝐄 𝐀 𝐖𝐑𝐎𝐍𝐆 𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐍.
There she sat in her light blue mini cooper, musing over all her fuck ups thus far. It had been around a month since she quit ballet, since then everything moved by at the slowest pace ever.
In truth,Seline felt like shit and had for some time. She tried to play it off,not at all interested in letting the sheep at school see her sweat. She went to parties, kissed more than a few boys and made sure she produced the best grades in her AP classes.
Beneath the surface though, her dissatisfaction still lingered, jeering at the losers in the halls wasn't cutting it. Her dad had been riding her ass, more so than usual. He had convinced himself and anybody that would listen that Seline was nothing less than a lazy, ungrateful daughter.
That wasn't what particularly worried her ,no, she was used to his insults.
It was his aggression. Maybe that's why she locked her car door twice and made her way to the Cobra Kai dojo.
This whole thing had been Moon's suggestion, more or less. She had been talking Seline and Yasmine's ear off about her new boyfriend that went there;Apparently he went by Hawk, but Seline much preferred his old nickname,Lip.
Y'know, because of his fucked up mouth.
Karate was a far cry from ballet,Seline was unsure how she'd adjust. But by her logic,if the nerds at school could do it,then so could she.
Upon walking in,the smell of sweat filled Seline's nostrils. It was putrid, but not unfamiliar. Ballet classes were more intense than this.
On the mats, there were some kids wrestling;Seline looked over them passively, largely unimpressed. She recognized some of them from school.
Losers. Social fucking pariahs.
And she was about to join them.
Among them, one person in particular stood out to her. Aisha Robinson,or miss piggy as Yasmine loved to call her. Seline had a bevy of nicknames for the girl, but she preferred to keep them to herself.
"Oh hell no!" Aisha shrieked out.
"Aisha,hi." Seline smiled. "Those lame ass pajamas are a step up from what you usually wear."
Aisha bounced up,making her way to Seline who remained unblinking. She knew Aisha wouldn't do anything,Yasmine had already made her life a living hell;Seline could make it a thousand times worse.
"Bitches like you aren't welcome here." Aisha said, her fists clenched.
"Well if they let you in here,I'm sure they could make an exception for me." Seline counted sweetly.
"Yo,Seline." Hawk greeted her casually,as if they were friends.
"Just because you're dating Moon, doesn't mean we're friends,Lip." Seline deadpanned, causing his expression to fall slightly.
"Woah, hey." Another guy stood up. Seline gave him a brief up and down,he looked somewhat familiar.
"You don't get to torture the entire school then waltz in here like nothing." Aisha continued.
Seline sighed dramatically. Being surrounded by a bunch of bottom feeders wasn't exactly her idea of a great time.
"And you probably shouldn't wear graphic tees." Seline shot right back.
Aisha practically launched herself towards her, being held back by most of the students.
Seline shrunk back upon instinct, partly in genuine fear but also ruining her brand new cashmere sweater.
"Let me go Miguel, she's basically asking for it." Aisha struggled.
Miguel Diaz. Seline remembered him now,the kid who sat behind her in AP bio.
He had won the All Valley,it was all everyone ever talked about.
Seline didn't really care about any of that, nor did she care about him.
But Miguel Diaz just so happened to be dating Samantha LaRusso,Seline's sworn enemy.
So,she basically hated him by association.
"She's not worth it Aisha." Miguel urged her to calm down.
"Oh I totally am,Diaz." Seline raised a perfectly threaded eyebrow.
For a moment,Miguel looked at Seline, seemingly surprised she knew his name.
"What the hell is going on in my dojo?" A booming voice shouted, causing all the kids to jump.
Seline turned to the source,a washed up man in his forties, possibly.
This was Johnny Lawrence? Seline was half tempted to book it in the opposite direction.
"She's one of the bullies I've been telling you about." Aisha ratted immediately.
Seline rolled her eyes. Antagonizing Aisha was more Yasmine's thing,Seline was more of a certified shit talker.
"I never bullied you." Seline said with a fake earnesty. It was only partly true, she'd never let herself get caught up like that.
"Did you come here just to bother my students?" Johnny questioned sharply, giving Seline the up and down.
"No actually." Seline said, thankful for the heat lessening on her.
"I came here to join your dojo, preferably the competition team."
Miguel gave Hawk a look,as did the rest of the class. Hell must've really frozen over was the overall consensus.
Seline Grey was one of the most popular girls at West Valley High, flanked directly by Yasmine and Moon. Moreover, she was devastatingly pretty, smart and the biggest bitch ever.
Word had already spread that she'd quit competitive ballet, for seemingly no reason.
Miguel knew her, kind of. He'd seen her stomp through the hallways as people cleared the way for her.
He knew she was a part of the National French honors society and had a knack for biology.
Miguel also knew Seline and Sam loathed each other. Sam had ranted about Seline more times than he could count;Sam was sure Seline was nothing short of pure evil.
Miguel didn't have any original thoughts about Seline Grey, but so far she was living up to all her titles.
Sensei Lawrence let out an offensive, but hearty chuckle.
"Look little lady,April Fools was yesterday."
Clearly,Johnny was having none of her.
"I'm not joking." Seline's lips formed into a pout. She figured the registration process would be relatively easy, but found herself more than annoyed with this walking mid life crisis of a man.
"Neither am I." Johnny shot right back. "I've heard all about you and your antics."
Seline looked down at her shoes for a second—There was no way she was leaving here unsuccessful. She needed this, whatever it was.
So Seline did what she does best. When she looked up to Johnny, her brown doe eyes widened with an innocence that most definitely didn't suit her.
"Look." Seline started, voice soft. "I'm not standing here pretending that i'm a saint or anything."
A few of the other students scoffed almost simultaneously.
"I heard about your win at the All Valley and I want in." Seline continued.
"You're not exactly Cobra Kai material." Johnny said. Seline held back a slick retort as she looked around the dojo. His class was made up of majority losers and weirdos, her joining would be a huge step up.
"We strike first here, hit hard stuff like that." Johnny gestured to the equipment around them.
"I'm a fast learner." Seline cut in,now growing a bit desperate. "Honestly,I'm probably the most flexible in this room."
"Ballet isn't karate." Hawk was annoyingly quick to point out. "We don't twirl here."
Seline promptly ignored him,for the sake of Moon; She wasn't in the mood to hear her pleas of being nicer to him.
"You seriously came from that pussy sport to here?" Johnny asked, befuddled. Some of the other students chuckled, causing Seline's eyes to narrow.
"I've always placed number one." Seline said, conveniently leaving out last month's debacle.
"What do you wanna see,I'll prove it to you." Seline kicked off her wedged sneakers, placing her hands onto her hips.
Johnny thought for a second before beckoning Miguel over to him.
"Let's see just how flexible you are." Johnny decided. "Both of you,on the mat."
Seline reluctantly followed Miguel as they stood across from each other. Whatever was about to happen, there was no way in hell Seline was about to let Sam LaRusso's boyfriend beat her at anything.
"Miguel here is our champ." Johnny said, patting his back. "If you can hold a split longer than him,I'll let you in."
Seline looked over Miguel again, something about his expression irked her deeply.
So determined.
"Fine." Seline said, crouching to the floor. "My size is a medium by the way, just so you know."
"Hawk, set a timer for ten minutes." Johnny barked.
"On it Sensei." Hawk pulled out his phone eagerly.
"I hope you stretched before this, you'll fucking need it." Seline hissed to him.
"I think i'll be fine." Miguel said.
Yeah, he had zero clue.
"Ok,go!" Hawk shouted. Miguel and Seline both entered their forward splits.
Ten minutes was nothing to Seline, she could practically do this in her sleep.
As the minutes trickled by,agonizingly slow for Miguel; Seline's face was nothing short of boredom.
She watched the little expressions on Miguel's face, how his eyebrows twitched when his puppy-like eyes tried to hold her gaze.
Nine minutes later,Miguel tapped out to the disappointment of his teammates.
" If he's the best of your students, then you must really need me." Seline jumped up,more than pleased with herself.
Johnny had to admit,he was more than impressed. Within an hour, this girl had shit talked his entire class and shown up his star student.
She was exactly what Cobra Kai needed.
"What did you say your name was?" Johnny asked.
"I didn't." Seline smiled confidently. "It's Seline Grey."
Johnny was silent for a moment, weighing his options.
"I expect you to report here tomorrow,Grey." Johnny said.
The multiple protests against it did little to deter Seline's satisfaction though.
She—Once again,got her way.
——
MIGUEL LISTENED as his teammates droned on about Seline after practice. She seemed sure of herself, but Miguel knew that could only get you so far here.
"I mean,I know she's like the worst." Chris said, taking a swig of his soda. "But you gotta admit, she's super hot."
"She tripped me in the hallway once." Aisha deadpanned, grouchily checking her phone.
"Moon said she was a crazy good ballerina once, but she quit and hasn't spoken about it since."
Miguel mulled over the information. What could a girl like Seline possibly gain from Cobra Kai? It certainly wasn't popularity;Seline had more than enough of that, and it was more than obvious Seline had never been bullied in her life.
The more he thought about it,the more confused he became.
