C14: Blast from the Past

"Come on, Frost! Hurry up!" Mike shouted up the stairs.

"I'm coming!" Frost replied.

"I swear, that boy." Mike said as he shook his head.

"Hey, don't be so hard on him. He's just seven." Margot said.

"I know, I know. It's just that at this rate were going to hit traffic and then he is going to..." Mike started to complain.

"Hush now, dear. Stop complaining." Margot said as she placed a finger on his lip, "This is suppose to be a father-son weekend. You need to relax and enjoy it."

"I know. Are you sure that you'll be okay on your own?" Mike asked the same question for the hundredth time.

"I'm sure. You know I can handle myself." Margot said as she gave her husband a reassuring smile.

"Sorry. I can't help it." Mike said with a smile.

"I'm ready!" Frost said excitedly as he bursted into the living room with his backpack.

"Are you ready, sweetie?" Margot asked.

"Yes, Momma." Frost replied excitedly.

"Took you long enough, sport. Let's get in the car." Mike said with a smile.

Mike made sure that everything was packed for the weekend's camping trip. He did one last check to make sure that everything was tightened firmly while Margot helped Frost into the passenger seat. Margot made sure that Frost was wearing his safety belt. After saying goodbye to her son, she said goodbye to her husband with a kiss.

Mike smiled and got into the vehicle, before starting it and reversing into the road. Mike and Frost waved goodbye to Margot, before they drove off. Mike noticed Frost staring at him with some disgust in his little face.

"What?" Mike asked while driving.

"Momma and Daddy kissing." Frost replied.

"What's wrong with me kissing Momma?" Mike asked with curiosity.

"Kissing is gross." Frost answered as he shook his head.

"Oh really?" Mike asked with a smile.

"Yes. It's gross." Frost replied.

"You will do it one day too, you know." Mike pointed out.

"No. Gross." Frost said as he shook his head.

"Yes, you will." Mike said.

"No! I won't!" Frost said, getting a bit upset.

"Okay. You won't." Mike said as he shook his head while smiling.

"Yes, I won't do it." Frost repeated with a nod.

"Okay, if you say so." Mike whispered to himself while driving.

They drove for about an hour, singing to songs on the radio and talking. They also played a bit of road trip bingo. The sun has finally came out and they narrowly missed traffic.

"Dad?" Frost asked with an innocent voice.

"Yes? What's up?" Mike asked, knowing that he wanted something now.

"I'm hungry." Frost stated.

"Don't worry. Well reach the drive-thru in ten minutes." Mike said, after checking the map.

About eleven minutes later, Mike parked the car in the parking lot of Divine Burgers. He decided to stop and eat at the place, rather than using the drive-thru, because his legs were stiff and could use a bit of stretching. Mike helped Frost out of the vehicle, before they headed to the fast-food restaurant.

Mike watched as Frost excitedly ran to the playground and started to play with the other kids. Mike smiled and ordered a steak burger meal for himself and a mini burger for Frost. He sat down at a table where he can keep a close eye on Frost and also hear when their order number is going to called out.

Frost waved goodbye to the furry he had been playing with, before he went to the table to eat his burger with his dad. After eating, Mike decided to let Frost go play for a little while, hopefully to tire him out a bit.

After about fifteen minutes, Mike called Frost. It was time to go now. Frost excitedly got back into the car with his dad, before they drove off. Mike smiled as he noticed Frost falling asleep in the passenger seat after a few minutes. He smiled and turned the radio down to make Frost sleep more peacefully.

Suddenly, a tire popped and Mike lost control over the car. The car swung off the road, before it started to roll down the hill. Mike groaned as he blinked while looking around for his son. He looked to his left and saw Frost laying lifeless in the passenger seat. He blinked repeatedly to fight back the tears as he crawled out of the vehicle, before running to the other side to get his son out.

"Frost! Speak to me!" Mike begged as he tried to get a pulse or a heartbeat.

"Please, Frost!" Mike wailed as he pulled his son close to his body.

"Hello, old friend." A voice said behind Mike, so dark that it made his neck hair stood up.

"No, please no." Mike begged as he turned around to look at Death.

"Listen, since I am in your debt, I'll make you deal." Death said as he looked at Mike.

"What's your offer, Death?" Mike asked as he looked at him carefully.

"I'll bring your boy back. But I need a life in his place. I believe that I don't need to explain it to you, old partner." Death said as he lightly tapped on his scythe.

"I'm not killing another person for you, Death." Mike said.

"Then I'll have to take him." Death said as he pointed at Frost.

"I wasn't finished. As I was saying, I won't kill anyone for you, but I'll exchange my life for his." Mike said.

"Mmm. You are aware of what that will do to him, right?" Death asked.

"I am and I don't care. He is a good boy. As long as he is alive." Mike said.

"Very well." Death said as he grinned, before swiping his scythe.

Mike dropped to the ground, gasping for air. He looked over at Frost and saw him beginning to breath again. He heard sirens in the distance as everything slowly grew fainter.

"Pleasure doing business with you, partner." Death said as Mike took his last breath.
