Episode Three, Part 4:
Sol
Wynn and Sol remained in the alcove, sitting in comfortable silence until a question came to Wynn's mind.
"What is that place?"
Sol followed his gaze and without realizing, let out a heavy sigh. Wynn noticed and couldn't hide the crease of his forehead as he stared back at her.
"It's called the DeadLands," the usual strength in her voice was lacking somewhat; something about it not quite matching up to the wonder before their eyes.
"DeadLands? What is it?"
"From what we know? A dead stretch," Sol answered.
"And beyond it?"
"Who knows..." She laughed a little but she didn't sound amused. "Maybe anything. No one's made it that far; at least not there and back again. As far as I'm aware, no one's really tried."
Wynn didn't know what to say. It seemed that no matter where he turned in his new world, there was danger surrounding him; on one side, a terrifying clan that had stolen away his brother and potentially the rest of his family, and on the other, a lifeless desert that seemed to offer no means of an escape.
"...Could my family be out there?"
Sol looked over, her features softened in doubt. "No. It was Blood Riders who intercepted our evacuation of the Bunker; they'd have no reason to take your people there. They'll be at their camp, if anywhere."
"And what would be their reason for taking my family to their camp?"
"...They're-"
"Sol, come in."
Wynn frowned, startled at the interruption, and tried to figure out where the voice had come from. He looked to Sol for an answer, watching as she rolled her eyes and pulled out a device from her waistband.
"Sol, are you there-"
"Yes, dad. Can this wait?" She shifted away slightly, her knees now pointing opposite her company in an attempt for privacy, but Wynn didn't get the hint.
"What do you think my answer is going be?" Eryx asked through what Wynn now understood to be a radio. "I've told you, Sol, don't waste your breath on things that don't need to be said. The Imitation begins in 40 minutes and Kodiak says he hasn't seen you all day."
Half the time, it felt like Wynn was listening to another language. So many of Basilisk's customs and sayings held so little meaning to him, and Sol wasn't exactly offering him an easy explanation when it came to most things. But he could hear that her father sounded tense; perhaps the Imitation was important to him and therefore, he expected it to be important to Sol, too.
She held the radio down in her hands as her father spoke, seemingly waiting for him to finish talking. Wynn ould see that she found pleasure in her act of disobedience - almost a thrill of on one being aware of her carelessness.
"You have five minutes to be in the Sovereigns' Quarters," Eryx warned. "Otherwise, I really will seize your training privlidges. That means no Dreea, no Kodiak-"
Sol huffed and Wynn understood that her father's consequence had struck a nerve.
She chucked her radio into her bag and gathered up her belongings, barely sparing a moment to look over at Wynn as she said, "I have to go."
"To the Imitation?" Wynn guessed.
Sol paused, suddenly glaring over at him. "You listened to my conversation?
Wynn just shrugged, his smirk enough to annoy Sol more than his words ever could.
"Great. Another thing I have to teach you," she muttered. "You want to be accepted at Basilisk? Have some respect. Especially for you Sovereigns." She slung her bag strap over her shoulder and led with a fast pace to move past him, only to be caught off guard.
"My apologies, Sol," Wynn said, standing up as he also prepared to vacate the space. "Although, I thought you weren't a Sovereign yet..."
In an instant, she had thrown her bag on the ground and came to a stop directly in front of Wynn, squaring him up. "Don't ever call me that," she spat; her words departed through gritted teeth, joined together with jabs on his chest.
Wynn folded his arms in an attempt to challenge her. "I thought I had the right to, just between us."
"Really?" She scoffed. "Since you know so much about the world, why don't you tell me what right that is exactly?"
"The same right you had to pull me out of my home; to keep me trapped here; to tattoo your name on my skin."
