6. College Degrees

"Hello America," Canada greeted his younger twin. "Remember you asked me to stay over a few weeks ago and I told you that I'd get back to you? Well my house is under going renovations so I was wondering if I could take you up on that offer if it isn't too late?"

"It was actually a few years ago, I'm sure it's been at least a decade," America thought just a bit resentful. "But who's counting certainly not me. It's not like I'm bitter and lonely or anything like that. I don't mind not having a family or any genuine friends, really I don't."

"Sure Canadia the hero can never turn away his adoring fans!" America exclaimed with just a hint of nervousness in his voice. "HAHAHAHA!"

"Jeez my laugh is irritating. I swear its like nails on a chalkboard or like a drunk Iggie trying to sing," Alfred thought cringing slightly at the mental image. "My brain to mouth filter is definitely broken or maybe it just never existed?"

"Thanks America I really appreciate it," Canada replied smiling tightly. "The car I'm using is a rental so I'll have to return it because I'm not sure how much I'll actually drive."

"I really hope that I don't regret this," Canada prayed silently as he glanced up to the sky hoping for a sign from a higher power. "Maybe it isn't too late to ask Papa to stay with him. But I'd probably hurt America's feelings. I mean he's still my ...older brother or little brother? I'm not really sure, I hope I remember to ask Papa."

*One Long, Really Boring Meeting Later*

"Ready Canadia?" America asked bouncing on the tips of his toes excitedly as he went over to his twin.

"It's Canada," Canada corrected patiently with a sigh. "Let me just tell Papa goodbye and tell him where I'll be for the next month."

"Okay tell Francey- pants I said bye," America said cheerfully. "I'll wait for you by your car."

Canada gathered his belongings and placed them in his bag before going to find his father figure.

It didn't take long for the Canadian to find France, all he had to do was follow the sound of fighting and the feeling of sexual tension. He took a deep breath before going to interrupt England and France's daily fight.

"I won't be at home for about a month or two Papa so if you need me call my cell. My house is being renovated so I'm staying with America for the time being," Canada explained softly. "I'm not exactly sure where his main house is but my pretty sure its in the state of Virginia somewhere? I'm sure you know where England."

"Why would you want to stay over with that git for so long?" England questioned confused. "Wouldn't you rather staying over with me or even the frog? Are you sick lad? There is a hospital somewhere that we can take you to if you're feeling ill."

"I know how you feel about him Arthur but I can't back out of this now without seriously hurting his feelings. I hope that I won't regret this," Canada admitted as he picked at a stray thread on his jacket. "Maybe it will be okay? I'm sure it will be.

"Goodbye and good luck Mathieu," France said earnestly. "I hope that you return in one piece. If necessary send me a text and we'll figure out a way to bail you out. Now give Papa a hug."

Canada gave his father a quick hug being careful to not get groped before he went to join his brother at his car. England stared after Canada with clear worry as he hoped that the quiet nation would be okay. The older twin had a red Honda CR-V while the younger one got into a blue BMW X1 with an American flag on the bumper.

"I've been staying in Virginia for a while but if you think it might be too hot for you we can go to Philadelphia," America suggested gently as he tapped his fingers on the steering wheel. "It's your choice dude. I just want you to be comfy."

"I wouldn't want to inconvenience you and I do know how to handle heat so Virginia is fine." Matthew responded. "This car is a rental so I need to drop it off, I hope its not out of your way."

"Nah bro nothings an issue. You wanna stop and get McDonalds?" Alfred asked hopefully. "I'll even buy yours for you, promise."

Matthew sighed and smiled tightly as he agreed to his brother's wishes. He remained mostly quiet to his brother's house, occassionally making noises of agreement while texting his Papa and Arthur asking for advice. Slowly, Alfred quieted down as he realized his twin didn't seem too interested and focused on the road.

The drive there was spent mostly in silence apart from the stops at McDonalds and at a supermarket to get groceries before they onto a rather large estate. They passed the main house that Matthew remembered visiting as a child that Arthur had built. They stopped further in, closer to the mountains at a smaller southern style house with a wrap around porch.

"I don't remember this place," Matthew mumbled as he got out and grabbed his bag. "A wrap around porch? Really?"

"No one appreciates the beauty of wrap around porches," Alfred said with a sigh. "And the big house felt ....too big so I got a smaller one built and I rent out the big one and the land to some farmers. A retired Secret Service member and his wife who know about nations already so don't worry about like being exposed."

Matthew raised an eyebrow as he followed his brother inside his house which opened into a large living room. America began giving Matthew a short tour, only exempting one particular hallway, only saying that it was his study and that it was really boring.

The American left his brother alone, suggesting he take a nap before disappearing into the house. Matthew attempted to rest before his curiosity won him and he stuck down to the hallway where the study was. The entire hallway was plastered with framed degrees and certificates ranging from simple associate degrees all the way up to a few PhDs.

"Where'd he get all those certificates?" Matthew questioned awed as he took a step closer to examine how legitimate the degrees looked.

"Princeton, Harvard, Colombia, MIT, Yale, Stanford," The personification mumbled as he ran his fingers along each framed certificate. "Medicine, law, finance, philosophy? There's a degree for just about every semi relevant field from all his top universities. ....is that Oxford? It is Oxford! A duel degree on biochemistry and medicine, and it looks real."

The pale teen quickly took a picture of it and sent it to Arthur asking him to verify whether or not if was actually real. Matthew continued down the hallway, craning his neck to attempt to examine every diploma possible and it was only when he pushed open the slightly ajar door that he heard Alfred speaking to someone. The tan American appeared to be on a conference call on Zoom discussing something with similarly aged students about something mathematical.

Matthew attempted to remain quiet but was betrayed by an unexpectedly squeaky floorboard.  Alfred whirled around in his chair, panic a little clear before he took a deep breath and gave Matthew a welcoming smile. The northernmost twin hesitantly came closer making sure to sit on another chair out of view of the camera as he simply listened to his twin and classmates bounce ideas off each other about mathematical concepts so complex that they sounded practically like a foreign language. Canada let his mind wander a little as he glanced around the room at the neatly stacked piles of paperwork, the trophies, the awards and the group pictures taken to celebrate each graduating class the American had been apart of.

"See you guys next week!" Alfred exclaimed happily. "I totally feel we're in track to totally coming out on top of the class dudes and dudettes! Bye!"

"You actually went," Matthew said slightly awed and a tad confused. "When the hell did you have time to do all this and how come I never knew?"

"You wouldn't have cared probably and I doubt you would have believed me if I told you anyways," Alfred said with a hint of sadness in his voice. "And ever since I became an independent country my boss has been making me go, Enlightenment and all that. And it's kinda fun too? So I just kept going and I try to visit and attend each university I can, I went to a few European universities too because I wanted to compare the difficulties. This is a mostly online class though because I've been so busy that I haven't been able to attend a physical university full time in about 4 years or so."

"Wow. That's really amazing Alfred, I'm soory that you felt you couldn't trust me but if you're clearly so educated how come you never say anything intelligent at the meetings?"

Alfred frowned and examined a folder that he had tossed onto a corner of his desk before finally admitting "I get really nervous okay? I hate when everyone is staring at me, it's one thing to defend a thesis in front of a group of strangers who will give constructive criticism versus a group of personifications who I'll see next month who love making fun of me. So then I just end up babbling about something. I do have actual presentations that I just email to the necessary people and stuff but I can't present in front of you guys ...my family."

Canada furrowed his eyebrows before grabbing the folder and leafing through it. He felt a rush of shame as he saw that the presentation was in fact logical and he hated that his twin felt that way, in large part due to him. The American hesitantly stood up and pulled his twin into a hug, smiling a little when he felt the affection being reciprocated.

"Why don't we get a snack and I'll tell you about my favourite schools?" Alfred offered hopefully.

Canada nodded, wanting nothing more than to make his brother happy in that moment and to repent for his wromgdoings. One of Alfred's phone vibrated on his desk and he glanced at it confused as it clearly showed that Arthur was calling him which was really weird.

"Hey Art-" Alfred began before he was cut off by the much older nation who immediately began yelling at him.

Canada winced a little at the volume of the enraged Brit before he was cut off by a gentler French voice who urged him to calm down and to save all that yelling for the bedroom.

"How did you get into Oxford!" Arthur demanded.  "And you never even told me! Who did you bring to you graduation? It was Japan wasn't it? You could've... you should've invited me."

"Dude are you jealous?" Alfred asked teasingly. "I just had an Agent along for like security reasons and ....maybe I'll invite you to the next one."

"Next one? Hmph, I might have to wait another 30 years before you actually get off your lazy behind to do something else mildly productive in your life." Arthur scoffed before the phone was grabbed from him.

"Congratulations Amerique! Arthur and I will now have congratilatory sex in your honor, ohonhonhon." France giggled before the call was ended with enraged screams from Arthur in the background.

America and Canada glanced at each other before shivering in horror and going to the kitchen to make snacks.
