5. Nordic Pt.1
"Hey Mattie? Can I come over for a maybe a week? I feel like we haven't been spending much time together," Alfred confessed to his neighbor. "I mean only if you want to ... But I think it would be fun!" We could watch mov-"
"I'm sorry America but I already have prior obligations " Matthew interrupted. "And I should be getting to them."
"With who?" Alfred questioned curiously and a little hurt.
"Papa, Arthur and I are going to spend the next month or so at Papa's new chateau in the countryside," Matthew informed him. "I should probably go to my hotel to pack since we're heading there straight from Finland."
"Can't I come?" Alfred asked a little desperately. "And since when do you call me America? Its always Alfred when we're alone."
"Um I don't think Arthur would enjoy your company, neither would Papa for that matter," Matthew said. "And I just forgot, okay Alfred."
"Would you, would you enjoy my company?" Alfred asked softly.
"To be frank? Not really, now I really got to go." Matthew said as he stood up and started walking away.
"Goodbye," Alfred whispered dejectedly. "It's not like I was lonely anyway."
Alfred gathered his things and started walking to the main entrance contemplating what he could do to fill his time.
"Did that pig really think that we would let him come ruin our vacation? We already have to spend it at the frog's place!" Arthur complained. "We already spend enough time with him as it is."
"Oui, what a horrid idea," France agreed. "He is quite, uh a burden. The only reason I spend even a little time with him is either out of pity, or out of obligation."
Alfred choked back a sob and rushed to the bathroom as the critics from the people he thought were his family quickly faded into the distance. He pushed open the closest bathroom stall and sank to the floor in tears. To him, it felt like his heart had been ripped out, stepped out and put through a blender to hear that his family disliked his presence so much.
As Alfred rocked himself back and forth on the floor trying to calm himself down and get his emotions in check he heard the sound of a few voices coming in his direction. His breath hitched, terrified that it was his so called family again, perhaps ready to continue bashing him.
"M' w'f'." Sweden insisted as he went into the bathroom with the shorter man.
"I'm not a woman!" Finland replied tiredly. "Is there someone else here?"
"There is someone in the first stall I believe." Sweden said gruffly.
Alfred relaxed a fraction, glad it wasn't his family but still terrified that someone else was there. Sweden opened the stall slowly, a bit concerned about the crying sound coming from behind the stall.
"America?" Sweden mumbled surprised.
Finland pushed the taller nation aside to get a peek for himself.
"Oh are you alright sweetie?" Finland cooed as he saw the tear stained face of the younger nation.
"I'm f-f-fine," Alfred hiccupped. "S-sorry to d-disturb you g-guys."
"Should I get England or France?" Finland asked concerned.
Alfred burst into a fresh wave of tears at the names of his would be parents.
"Oh dear, I'm sorry," Finland apologized. "Can I hug you? Is that okay? You look like you need one."
Alfred nodded after a moment's hesitation and Finland was quick to envelop the younger blond in a much needed hug. Alfred buried his face in face in Tino's shoulder and began crying onto it while Finland rubbed his back soothingly. It took about five minutes for him to calm down, but then the embarrassment set it.
"I'm sorry for making you do that," Alfred apologized. "I shouldn't hav-"
"It's perfectly fine," Finland reassured as he brushed a stray hair back behind Alfred's ear. "Everyone needs a shoulder to cry on sometime."
Sweden grunted in agreement and handed a handkerchief to Finland to wipe Alfred's tear stains. Tino dabbed at Alfred's flushed cheeks gently feeling a strange affection for the younger boy.
"Tinooooooo," A voice whined from the hallway. "You guys have been in the bathroom forever."
"You should go," Alfred mumbled as he moved to stand. "Denmark is looking for you."
"We're in here," Finland called before turning to Alfred with a kind smile. "I'm alot harder to get rid of than that."
Denmark walked into the bathroom followed by Norway and Iceland, all were surprised to see Tino and Berwald comforting America.
"What's up bro?" Denmark asked as he lookes at Alfred's puffy, red eyes.
"Its nothing really, I'm fine," Alfred reassured weakly. "I'm the hero afterall."
Iceland snorted quietly at that as Finland picked up Alfred's things from the floor.
"I know you aren't, there's no point in denying it and frankly I don't feel comfortable letting you leave my country until then," Finland said. "So will you come stay with us for a while? Just until you feel better."
"I um don't know how I'd feel about that," Alfred mumbled fidgeting awkwardly. "I mean I don't really know you that well."
"Why don't we have dinner first? Or lunch since it's closer to that time," Finland proposed with a smile. "I'm sure that would help settle your nerves."
Alfred chewed on his bottom lip nervously before nodding still unsure. Finland handed Alfred his things and led him out of the bathroom by hand. The other Nordics followed behind while Sweden gave America a few quizzical looks.
"He reminds me of someone," Iceland thought. "I'm not sure who though."
Finland led the small group to a small family owned restaurant tucked away between two larger buildings. Finland sat the still nervous Alfred next to them while the other Nordics piled into the large booth.
A waitress handed the group a few menus, some in English and the others in the local dialect.
"So what do you want to eat? Finland asked the youngest nation present.
"Um, I don't know much about Finish dishes," Alfred admitted as he tugged on a strand of hair nervously. "I usually just order fast food or something, not that I'm saying I hate your local food or anything its just that I'm usually pretty busy and I don't really have time to try something new."
Finland smiled warmly at the obviously nervous nation and ordered a simple, local dish for him. Alfred kept his eyes focused on the table in front of him and a stray thread on his sleeve.
"There is no need to be nervous," Finland said comfortingly. "We don't bite, and you looked like you could use a bit of company."
"Yeah we caught a bit of the argument with you and the other blonde dud," Denmark blurted out. "Sounded nasty."
"Shut it you imbecile," Norway snapped as he hit Denmark behind his head. "Don't bring that back up."
"Oh," Alfred whispered. "It was just a small disagreement, nothing serious. Nothing the hero can handle."
"Is that why you were in the bathroom?" Finland asked gently.
"I- I wasn't crying! It was completely heroic ....and up yeah." America mumbled quickly loosing steam.
"It sounded pretty messy to me," Denmark remarked. "And then England and Fran-"
Norway slapped a hand over Denmark's mouth while giving the other national a death glare. The waitress returned with their meals and handed them out to the nations.
"They just didn't want me to go on vacation with them that's all," Alfred insisted. "It wasnt anything big."
"But I thought you guys were the FACE family? The pinnacle of a perfect functional yet dysfunctional family?" Iceland asked curiously with a raised eyebrow.
"Not really," America admitted sounding longing. "Its mostly France, England and Canada, I don't really do much with them. They forget to invite me sometimes, I get it they're busy too. Besides there is only so much awesomeness that Iggy can handle before he loses it."
The Nordics exchanged glances over Alfred's head while he concentrated on enjoying his meal.
"Have you thought about staying over yet?" Finland proposed again. "I think it would be fun."
"I wouldn't want to impose," Alfred responded mind flashing back to earlier today. "I'd just be a bother."
"Nonsense, we'd love to have you over." Finland insisted.
"Whatever my wife wants." Sweden agreed.
"Sure, sounds like fun!" Denmark shouted. "Finally someone to do fun things with, Norge is a bit boring."
Norway glared at Denmark as his fingers itched to strangle the other man with his tie and nodded at Alfred reassuringly. Iceland shrugged, pretty indifferent to the situation, he didn't really know the younger nation and he was a bit curious all the same.
Alfred looked up at them, hope glistening in his large, blue eyes.
"So what do you say?" Finland asked.
"I'd like that then," America agreed a bit uncertainly. "Just let my boss know."
"Wonderful," Finland smiled. "Mathias and Lukas will go with you to get your things at the hotel and Berwald, Emil and I will go ahead and set up your room. I'll call your boss the moment I get home."
America smiled brightly, finally allowing himself to be excited. In that moment he looked so much like Finland that the other Nordics had to do a double take.
"Thank you! I promise you won't regret it!" Alfred declared.
Finland smiled gently at the excited teen and led the large group out of the building. Denmark, Norway and America headed to the hotel which was only a few blocks away while Finland, Sweden and Iceland headed to nearby car and drove off.
While Alfred silently fretted to himself Norway studied the younger nation wondering why he seemed so familiar to him. Denmark was just happy to have someone else to play video games and play pranks with. The trio entered the luxurious hotel and took the elevator to the 12th floor. Alfred led the others to his hotel room and swiped his room key. The room was beautifully decorated with high ceilings, ocean blue walls and gorgeous furniture. There were two suitcases and a backpack resting against the wooden bed frame. Alfred went through his room once more to make sure he had left nothing behind while Denmark plopped onto the soft bed and Norway stood near the door.
"Okie dokie I think I'm done!" Alfred exclaimed.
Norway nodded, Denmark picked up one of the suitcases with a smile and Alfred picked up the other ans closed the door behind them. After the room card was returned the trio pilled into a blue car with Alfred in the back seat, Denmark driving and Norway in the front seat.
"It's a two hour drive, you might as well take a nap," Norway suggested as he glanced at Alfred's dark under eye bags in the mirror. "Well wake you when we're close."
"Sure dude," Alfred yawned. "Sounds awesome."
Alfred shifted a little and eased himself into a more comfortable position. He quickly fell asleep exhausted from his previous nights of little sleep which were due in part to his worrying about his family and his presentation at the meeting. About one hour later Alfred started mumbling something softly.
"Pappa, Isä," Alfred mumbled in a mix of Swedish and Finnish. "Uncle Lukie, Emil and Uncle Mathi came to visit me today."
Denmark nearly swerved off the road at hearing a nickname he hadn't heard in close to 300 years.
"Are you trying to kill us dumb dane!" Norway yelled as he grabbed the wheel of the car. "Next time pull over."
Alfred woke up with a start, wide eyed and worried. Denmark parked the car on the side of the road and turned to stare at Alfred with a strange look on his face.
"You speak Swedish and Finnish?" Denmark asked curiously.
"No, I know Spanish though," Alfred offered as he took deep breaths to calm his heart. "And Francis tried to teach me a little French when I was his colony, but it didn't really work out.
"How do you know those nicknames?" Norway asked on Swedish. "The ones you were muttering in your sleep."
"I don't know what you're talking about," Alfred replied confused automatically. "It was just a weird dream, I can't remember much besides a beautiful sea and untouched woodland, oh and a bunny!"
"A bunny called Bunbun?" Denmark asked in Danish.
"Yeah! How'd you know?" Alfred asked wide eyed.
"Masaka?." Norway whispered softly.
Alfred's head shot up in recognition before he was struck by a terrible head ache. The young nations whimpered quietly as he rubbed at his pupils gently seeking a bit of reprieve.
"For a moment I swore I felt England's magic," Norway thought as his eyes widened slightly. "England must have put a spell on his for him not to remember us somehow. It should be fairly easy to remove if that's the case."
"Are you alright?" Denmark asked as he stared at Alfred's prone figure.
Norway meanwhile was murming a spell quietly, working on removing the spell surrounding the young teen. Alfred whimpered louder as Norway removed the spell while Denmark looked on confused. The teen's eyes rolled to the back of his head as he collapsed in a dead faint.
"America!" Denmark shouted as he opened his door to go to the backseat.
"He'll be fine," Norway mumbled. "There was just a spell on him which I removed, one which was blocking his memories."
A few minutes later Alfred woke up clutching his head on pain. He looked up at the other nations confused and stared at Denmark who was leaning over him hard.
"U-u-uncle Mathias? Uncle Lukas?" Alfred murmed still in a state of shock. "What happened?"
"England put a spell on you," Norway scowled. "He must have wiped your memories of us clean.
"Oh my gosh Tino is going to be sooooo happy!" Denmark noted.
"Ïsa," Alfred whispered. "I miss my Ïsa and my Pappa."
"They'll be there soon enough kid," Denmark smiled goofily. "Would a hug from your favorite uncle help?"
Alfred nodded wordlessly and Denmark was quick to wrap the smaller nation in a hug. Alfred buried his face in Denmark's shoulder restraining his tears.
"If I remember properly I was the favorite uncle," Norway corrected as he switched to the driver's seat. "Because I taught him magic."
Norway continued driving to the Nordic residence while Denmark awkwardly held Alfred having forgotten the feeling. Alfred fell asleep a few minutes later, having been drained of energy from the spell.
"Sweden is sooo gonna kill bushy brows," Denmark said grimly. "For taking his precious little boy."
"It's Finland you need to worry about, he was very protective over Vinland and already dislikes the way England is treating America without knowing that's his son," Norway corrected. "Especially after what happened today."
Author's Note
This waa honestly not planned, but its part of an experiment with my friend who also wrote one a similar story but yet one that's completely different. The prompt was that Alfred was actually a Nordic family member. And the reason his name is "Masaka" is cause they found America in America and he had already been named Masaka by the locals.
