Always There

"Hello?" Hazel answered. Who could be calling her at this time of night?

"Yes is this Ms. Hazel Carlson?" A strong authoritative voice spoke. She recognized him as the sheriff.

"Yes it's Hazel Sheriff Stilinski. What's wrong?" Worry crept into her voice as she nervously picked at her bun.

"I'm on my way to pick you up. I'm sorry to say this but your parents were in a terrible accident."

"W... what?" Hazel's voice cracked and her bottom lip trembled. Her breaths were short and uneven.

"I'll tell you more later," he replied before hanging up. Hazel shook her head. This isn't happening. It's just some sick prank. They're alive and they're fine. They'll be home and everything will be ok.

But the more she tried to convince herself that it all wasn't true, she slowly realized that this was happening. Her parents were in the hospital and there was nothing she could do about it. She wiped the few tears she let escape off her cheeks and took a deep breath.

Not a moment later Sheriff Stilinski knocked on the door. Hazel grabbed her school sweater and put on her Snoopy slippers and opened the door. Of course she was dressed in her Peanuts pj's and Mr. Stilinski couldn't help but smile. When Hazel was little she used to sit in the sheriff's department with him and her father, Sheriff Carlson. To him she was still the cute, little, Charlie Brown loving girl he knew.

"Let's go Hazel. And as far as I know your father is ok and will be waking up soon." She let out a relieved sigh as she tugged on her sleeves.

"And my mama?" she asked in a small, broken voice.

Sheriff Stilinski's eyes saddened and his shoulders fell. "Your mother is not in the greatest condition. They're operating on her as we speak."

Hazel took a shaky breath and nodded.

"So are you ready to go?" He asked.

She shook her head and nodded, trying to hold in her tears, and followed him to the car. A few minutes and a drunk driver later they made it to the hospital. She shuffled after Sheriff Stilinski to the waiting area and he walked up to a nurse. She was in a light blue nurse's outfit and had curly brown hair. Hazel looked at her name tag, but couldn't recall her name.

A few seconds later both she and Sheriff Stilinski approached her. "Hello Hazel," the nurse said. "My name is Melissa McCall. Your father, as Sheriff Stilinski told you, is alright. He is sleeping right now and you'll be able to see him soon. Your mother is still being operated on, but from what we know so far the operation is going as planned. Is there anyone else we could call to help you?"

Hazel, after hearing all the positive answers, sighed. Her shoulders, which she didn't realize were so tense, slacked and she relaxed. She wiped her eyes as exhaustion from the previous events settled in. All she wanted to do was sleep, especially now that she knew they were ok. She politely declined their offer.

Sheriff Stilinski left and Nurse McCall walked off to do whatever it was nurses do. Hazel sighed and tilted her head back against the wall and caught up on some much needed sleep.

"Hazel! Wake-up!" An angry voice interrupted. Hazel snapped awake and fell off the chair she was snoozing in.

"Wha?" She questioned wiping a line of drool from her mouth. Bleh!

"Why didn't you call me?!?! I was worried sick about where you ran off to! I couldn't find you or Toby, I had to haul a drink Christian home and then I come home to find that you're not there and neither was mom or dad. Then I called Sheriff Stilinski and he said that they're in the hospital and you're there to?! Do you not realize how confused and crazy my night has been?!"

Hazel gasped. She couldn't believe she forgot to tell Richard about their parents. Tears instantly sprang into her eyes and she struggled to keep them in.

"Richard, I - I'm so sorry. I wasn't even thinking! I just found out that our parents could be dead and I was so upset that I couldn't even do anything, I'm so sorry! I should have called you, I'm sorry, Richard, I'm so sorry!" She was sobbing now as her cries grew quieter and more pitiful.

Richard, with hot frustrated tears, clung her close. He gripped onto her as he finally shed his tears for the night. His maroon dress shirt, wrinkled from his distress, was,now drenched in Hazel's tears. The brother and sister held each other close, comforting each other. No matter the outcome of their parents accident they would take care of each other. They would pull through this together.
