FAQs: Featuring Cosplay
So many cosplay FAQs. So many. If I missed one in here that you would like me to add to this chapter and answer, comment your question below!
Q: How many wigs do you have?
A: ...currently? Eleven.
Q: Who are you going to cosplay as/already have cosplayed?
A: Holy shit this is a long list. Blake Belladonna (RWBY), Ciel Phantomhive (Black Butler), Death the Kid (Soul Eater), Mikasa Ackerman (Attack on Titan), Weiss Schnee (RWBY), Cinder Fall (RWBY), Stealth Cinder Fall (RWBY), Tsubaki (Soul Eater), Neopolitan (RWBY), Crona (Soul Eater), Asuna Yuuki (Sword Art Online), Pokemon Trainer Serena (Pokemon), Queen Elsa (Frozen), Pyrrha Nikos (RWBY), Haruhi Fujioka (OHSHC), Ariel (The Little Mermaid), Leader Valerie (Pokemon), Alois Trancy (Black Butler), Juvia Loxar (Fairy Tail), Bishamonten (Noragami), Glynda Goodwitch (RWBY), Yato (Noragami), Princess Yona (Yona of the Dawn), Kofuku (Noragami). And I'm sure I'll add more eventually.
Q: Where can I find your cosplay photos you take?
A: Check these three places, because I most often post my stuff here:
Instagram: awkwardturtlecosplay
Deviantart: SerenaEmily
Twitter: lilrena130
Q: What conventions do you go to?
A: Mostly local ones in my state, like Animazement, Cosplay America, Ichibancon, Triad Anime Convention, Aniwave...etc.
Q: Can we meet you at conventions?
A: I mean, if you guys plan on traveling to the state of North Carolina and go to a convention I'm specifically going to, I would love to meet up with you and freak out over cosplay and stuff! XD I'm sure there would be lots of hugs involved too. Just sayin'
Q: What's an anime convention like, and is it worth it to go?
A: Oh my god, I LIVE for these conventions, they are so much fun. Thousands of people go to a big rented out space like a convention center and/or a hotel in cosplay, and you all fangirl over everyone's costumes and take pictures and participate in photo shoots. There's a room more often than not called a dealer's room, where a bunch of independent sellers come and set up booths where they sell their stuff, and you can buy anime merch, candy, weapons, cosplay stuff, etc. I got a bunch of Japanese candy and two real samurai swords at a convention I went to last year. I almost got a couple wigs and dresses too. You walk around and meet new people, do some very entertaining people watching with the dorks doing silly stuff around you, and you have a blast in cosplay. There are things called panels where people gather for a specific anime and have cosplayers who are dressed as those characters do hilarious Q/A sessions, dares, etc. Anime conventions even have special events like Cosplay Chess, which is human chess basically with cosplayers who attend the convention. I've been a chess piece in cosplay chess before, and let me just tell you, it is SO MUCH FUN! Even if you're not on the board, it's super entertaining to watch a bunch of different anime characters harass and actually kill each other XD XD XD
Q: What do you use to make your prop weapons?
A: Well, if you're like me and you're cheap without access to any heavy duty power tools for cutting wood, I use: foam poster board, pink drywall spackle, a bunch of sand paper, spray paint, plasti dip spray, craft foam, EVA foam, misc add-ons like plastic gems and seashells, etc. If you've got money to spare and access to a workshop, I would use these for good quality weapons: wood, expanding foam, Apoxie sculpt, and anything I listed for the cheap method above.
Q: Do you have an etsy shop?
A: Yes, but it won't be up and running for a couple more weeks, because I have to wait until my eighteenth birthday before I can legally start selling stuff XD I'll be doing cosplay prop weapon commissions, and sometimes I'll make some accessories for your cosplays on commission like bags I can sew, bows, arrow sheaths, etc. I don't know what you guys want/need. My shop name is awkwardturtlecosplay though.
Q: If I'm buying a cosplay costume, where are the best places to look?
A: When I buy cosplay, I always check Amazon first because I have a prime account, I get fast shipping, and 99% of the time I'm satisfied with what I bought. If I have a more complex costume I need, I buy them on etsy from two separate, private tailors I have around the world who do cosplay commissions for me. Fancy, I know, right? XD I'm a dedicated cosplayer.
Q: Is eBay reliable for cosplay shopping?
A: Yes and no. Personally, I use eBay as a last resort, like if I can't find something anywhere else, because you can't ever see a clear picture of the item you're buying and it's too easy to get ripped off. That's why my go-tos are Amazon and etsy.
Q: Where do you get your wigs?
A: Nine times out of ten I'll find one on Amazon that is good quality and for an affordable price. As a last resort, I'll check eBay, but if I have a really funky wig that I can't find anywhere, I have a shop on etsy that custom makes wigs for me. If you have money to burn and you want an amazing quality wig that will last forever, check out Arda wigs. I wish I was rich enough to afford these glorious wigs T-T
Q: How do I make cosplay armor?
A: Okay, there are two main ways to make it: using worbla, or using EVA foam. Google some YouTube tutorials for whichever material you decide to use, because each one is different, but bear in mind that worbla is crazy expensive and EVA foam is more affordable.
Q: How do I make prop weapons?
A: Okay, just like the last question, Google some YouTube tutorials. Prop weapons is a long process you learn with lots of practice, and it's all trial and error, so it's hard to describe. And each method varies from person to person depending on what materials you use. My friend just made herself a Crescent Rose scythe from RWBY out of a broom and some cardboard, and although I personally don't like cardboard because it's cheap and doesn't look very good, she PULLED IT OFF and made it fantastic. I still don't know how she did it, but some people are just master blacksmiths I guess XD
Q: Serena, I have a cosplay I want to do in mind, but I'm not sure how to make it and/or buy some of the stuff, or where to even look or start. Will you help me?
A: Absolutely! I'll plop myself down at my computer and we'll start window shopping online, pulling up YouTube tutorials together, and we'll talk it out over PM on wattpad and/or Skype. I can even walk you through making some of your accessories and stuff on your own. No problem!
Q: What should I pack in my bag for a convention of I'm cosplaying?
A: Personally? This is what I bring: hot glue gun, wet wipes, phone charger, packed lunch, clear nail polish (for tights repair), mini sewing kit, glue of your choice, tape, band-aids, make up, compact mirror, two water bottles, a hair brush, safety pins, scissors, and anything else you can think of that you might need for cosplay repairing. Obviously, if you're a guy cosplayer, you can immediately cut out a few of these items XD this is just usually what I'll bring to a convention.
Q: If I'm a girl with long hair, what's the best way to put on and wear a wig?
A: Okay girl, I can relate. My hair is super long and sometimes I wear boys wigs that are so short it barely comes off my neck. So, here's what you do to hide all of your hair. Go to your local beauty store and invest in a couple wig caps. Make sure you get the tan ones that basically look like the end of panty hose, and not the black fish net ones that suck and slip off your head. Part your hair down the middle and put it into two tight braids. Now, some girls will Bobby pin these braids to their scalp to make it stay, but I personally don't do that because then the pins can stick out of my wig cap and sometimes even my wig, and it's uncomfortable if you're wearing this wig for twelve hours. So, what I do with my braided hair is I'll bend down so my braids are draped on top of my head, and I'll just pull the wig cap over my head and tuck any loose hair into it. You don't need to pin this or anything, because it'll stay. Now, pick up your wig and carefully put it on your head, and position it so the center dot at the top where all the hair comes from is in the middle of your head towards the back. Reach up under there and grab the hair net, and pull that around your scalp and adjust the wig as needed. Typically, I'll brush my wig before AND after I put it on, because this process can cause tangles XD
Q: Where is the best place to get fabric if I'm making my cosplay myself?
A: Honestly? Nine times out of ten, I can find everything I need in the fabric section at my local Walmart. It's a lot cheaper, and I try to avoid going to Jo-Ann fabrics if I can, even though it's awesome, simply because the fabric there is pricey. So if you have a local grocery store that sells fabric, check there first. When it comes to ordering fabric online, if I need something super specific, I'll narrow it down by checking a bunch of boxes for my fabric requirements on fabric.com and look there. They have thousands of fabrics, each one is reasonably priced, and they give you a description of the fabric so you know what the texture, color, and stretchiness of it is.
Okay... I think that's it for my cosplay FAQs. Again, if I missed something you'd like me to answer, comment your question below and I'll add it to this chapter!
