For people who have been to, or still go to, arcades you have no doubt seen the shooter variety of games. These are known as light gun games, fps games where the player is set on a rail like movement system and has to rely on quick reaction time to shoot down the enemies. Some of the most famous of these games are House of the Dead, Time Crisis, and several hunting games.

However, one of the most interesting of these games is a Sega title known as The Ocean Hunter.

Many people consider this to be a cult classic, as this one game where you hunt after several sea monsters has such a rich and detailed level of lore you don't get from other games of its variety. This is especially evident with the seven boss fights of this game, simply called the Seven Great Monsters.

The lore states that Rahab, the first ruler, was angered by humanities treatment of the seven seas after his millenium long sleep. To humble and stop them, he created ocean disasters and five monsters to wreck havoc on humanity and rule the oceans. We're gonna go over them from the order they come in, starting with....

The Kraken

The overseer of the Baroque sea, the Kraken is responsible for destroying 4 ships and killed 185 people. Its bounty is that of 5,000. It takes the appearance of a large octopus that lives within the corpse of a ship it destroyed.

The Leviathan

The overseer of the Luna sea, the Leviathan is responsible for the destruction of 11 ships and the deaths of 364 people. A large bounty of 8,000 rests on its head. The creature takes the appearance of a battle scarred Megalodon who you fight in the sunken ruins of an ancient city. During the fight, other sharks will come to the Leviathans aid and defend it.

The Charybdis

The overseer of the Tartarus Deep, the Charybdis has caused the destruction of two submarines and withheld numerous deep sea operations for humanity, giving it a bounty of 10,000. With the fight occurring in a dark portion of the sea, the creature takes on the appearance of a massive angler fish, using its light to guide unsuspecting prey.

The Ahuizotl

The overseer of the Texcoco Great Lake, the Ahuizotl has been known to attack lakeside towns, of which it has destroyed two towns and killed 18 people. This has given it a bounty of 12,000. Being a marine reptile, the creature is akin to a plesiosaur or "Loch Ness Monster" type creature. Unlike the previous ones, the fight takes place in the water and halfway it moves onto land, where you battle in the remains of ancient Aztec like ruins.

The Karkinos

The overseer of the North Sea, the Karkinos has been the reason for the near extinction of the North Seas whale population and killed 15 divers. This has caused a bounty of 15,000 to be placed on it. Appearing as a monstrous spider crab, you fight it along the sea floor where the remains of dead whales can be found.

The Midgardsorm

The Overseer of the West Ocean, the Midgardsorm has been the culprit behind several disappearances of multiple ships, said to be possibly a thousand. The bounty for it is 18,000. With the appearance of a giant underwater earth warm with a mouth, it is unique compared to them due to the fact that it was not a creation of Rahab. In fact, it is speculated that it has existed long before Rahab came to be. Nevertheless, because of how massive this creature is, the only way to kill it is to travel inside of its massive body and destroy its heart.

Rahab

The final boss and a sea deity, he is found in Panthalassa, ancient ruins of an old civilization. Being said to be born of chaos, Rahab has taken care of the oceans for Millenia before falling into a deep slumber. As said before, he awoke and created disasters and the five creatures to wreck havoc and "humble" humanity. No one truly knows what this creature is. To fit its final boss nature, Rahab has three forms.

Dagon: a massive humanoid who crawls around like a frog. Attacks mainly by using his claws.

Poseidon: taking on a blue tint to his body, he stands straight up and begins to fire projectiles. Even adorning a rusted trident during the second phase.

Rahab: the true form of this beast. He takes of appearance to that of a demonic merman with a third eye growing on his head. He attacks with extreme viscousness.

The lore for this game may be simple yet it's so fantastically well done. If you want to, I suggest looking for gameplay of it on YouTube. They're relatively short, with only about 20-30 minutes of gameplay.
