Prog Time!

I absolutely love progressive rock. I have no shame in admitting this. There has been a serious lack of prog talk on my page for a while, and I am going to remedy this. This was supposed to be a ranking of prog bands, and somewhere along the line that failed, so here you go. The list of prog bands that I love that I haven't the heart to rank. If you like the band, please tell me! (If you are interested in a recommendation I can absolutely give you one😉)

1. Pink Floyd

Of all prog bands, definitely the most approachable. However, the sheer number of concept albums makes them undeniably proggy.

2. Procol Harum

This band is mostly known for tracks like "Whiter Shade of Pale," but I can assure you they are so much more. An excellent mix of blues, classical, and jazz

3. King Crimson

As I have recently learned, King Crimson was definitely the benchmark of all prog bands. In a sense they were the first, or maybe that honor goes to another band, depending on whose story you're hearing. Nevertheless essential.

4. Jethro Tull

I would say they are probably the best of the "Folk Prog" subgenre. Definitely one of my personal favorite bands. Also, they rival Pink Floyd in terms of concept album numbers.

5. Gentle Giant

Perhaps a little less known, yes, but also a very important band. One unique characteristic with Gentle Giant was the inclusion of medieval music into the mix of sounds.

6. Rush

Do not fight me, Rush is literally such a perfect band. All three members are so unbelievably talented, and the result is a powerhouse of progressive power.

7. Genesis

I have a real soft spot for this band. They were the first I really got into, and so for that I love them. There is a great mix of music with them, and I would say they are the best band for anyone to start with if they want to get into prog.

8. Yes

I love these guys so much! They have a similar sound to Genesis, and equally as endearing. (Btw, I've adopted Jon Anderson as my son because he is so adorable.)

9. Emerson, Lake, and Palmer

In a sense, they are the essence of the pretentious progressive rock band stereotype. However, at the same time they are seriously one of the best progressive rock bands ever. To listen to an ELP record is to be thrilled to your core.

10. Electric Light Orchestra

I would say they are the most radio friendly prog band. However, that does not take away from the quality of the music here. Some of the most beautiful melodies in all of rock can be found right here.

11. The Moody Blues

One of the original progressive rock bands, they were an excellent blend of prog and psychedelic rock.

12. Roxy Music

Particularly at the beginning, they were a mix of art rock and progressive rock. Do I really need to go on a rant though about how much I love this band?😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍

Because I will.

Important mentions: (Aka not true prog bands/artists but still worthy of mention as there was some crossover)
The Beatles
Alan Parsons Project
Supertramp
Kevin Ayers
