David Bowie: Classic Albums Rated
David Bowie had a lot of albums. Therefore, I will be limiting this to the albums from Space Oddity to Let's Dance.
(Fun fact, if you Google pin ups, 1940's porn comes up. If you google scary monster, well, you get the idea.)
Space Oddity
8/10
This is a really great second album (the first is just so so, TBH). It has a gorgeous folky feel that fortunately David continues to explore through the next couple albums.
Man Who Sold the World
10/10
Okay, so this album is much darker then the previous. However, musically it is also much richer. On some days I'd say it's my favorite, quite honestly.
Hunky Dory
10/10
This album has a much lighter feel then the previous one, while also maintaining that same songwriting integrity. Overall a great album.
Ziggy Stardust
8.5/10
Don't hate me, but I don't think this is close to Bowie's finest work. However, the songs are so good and meaningful and...
I'm having a hard time justifying the 8.5 rating....
Aladdin Sane
8/10
Meet the awesome, edgy cousin of Ziggy: Aladdin Sane! This album is collectively about the same quality as Ziggy.
Pin Ups
3/10
Except for a couple redeeming points, this album is borderline crap. It's a covers album, first off, and some of the covers aren't even good. I apologize if you like this album.
Diamond Dogs
9/10
This is the album where Bowie comes back in nearly full force. It's an artistic gem, and (unpopular opinion) overall stronger then Ziggy.
Young Americans
7.5/10
Bowie tries blue eyed soul on this album. Did it work? For the most part, yes. Yes it did.
Station to Station
10/10
Okay, this is the one where Bowie comes back in full force. Bowie sets the roots for fine, artistic experimentalism.
Low
10/10
This album kicks off the Berlin Trilogy, in which Bowie and Brian Eno worked together in (you guessed it) Berlin to produce the subsequent three classic albums. The collective artistic genius on this album is astounding.
Heroes
11/10
Somehow, Low was improved upon. I don't know how he did it, but he did. There is nothing wrong with this album. (*tearfully sings "Heroes)
Lodger
8/10
Unfortunately, this is the album where the concept of the Berlin Trilogy begins to fade. It is not a weak album though, just not a strong as the other two.
Scary Monsters
9/10
I don't even know what Bowie was trying here, but whatever it was, it was awesome. It's definitely not as experimental as the previous four albums, but still a classic album in a more direct rock lens.
Let's Dance
7.5/10
If you can get through this album without dancing, I commend you. It's an upbeat, fun album.
