Over the river and through the- wait, no, into the river
"Figures Percy's the one who let it slip," said Thalia sourly. Four said nothing after the simulations except a small, short warning and a few choice words and confusion.
"As soon as there's time, I want answers," he demanded.
"Hey, it's only because I went first out of you guys," defended Percy. "If Nico went first, he would've given it away all the same."
Suddenly, Eric turned around from where he was writing something on a chalkboard. All heads craned his way.
"What's going on?" Tris asked Reyna.
"Stage two progress report," Reyna explained, then her voice was cut short as she saw the ranks.
Tris
Peter
Reyna
Thalia
Annabeth
Percy
Nico
Christina
Molly
Will
Drew
Al
There was a silence, then the crowd of initiates began to disperse, slowly, until only a few were left. Tris, Reyna, Will, Christina, Peter, Al, Percy, and Annabeth.
Peter turned very slowly to his bunk, then whirled around 180 degrees and slammed Tris's shoulders against the wall.
"I will not be outranked by another Stiff," he spat. "How'd'you do it, huh? How the hell do you do it?"
"Leave her alone," said Will sharply. He leaned forward and yanked Peter away, but Peter elbowed Will in the chin, making his head snap back.
"Hey!" Reyna darted forward and grabbed Peter's wrist, twisting it sharply. "Stop it."
Peter wrenched his wrist free and glared at all of them. "Are you blind, or just stupid?" He demanded. "She's going to edge you guys out of Dauntless, and you're going to get nothing, all because she knows how to manipulate people and you don't. So when you realize that she's out to ruin us all, you let me know."
Peter stormed out of the room, fuming.
"You should sleep face down from now on," Percy advised Tris.
"And have Peter cut off her head?" Reyna gave a harsh laugh.
"I'm fine," Tris said sharply. "I can take care of myself."
"So could Percy," Annabeth pointed out. "But when you sleep, you're defenseless."
She, Percy, and Reyna left Tris, Will, Christina, and Al in the room. They were just heading down the dark hallway to the Pit when Four intercepted them.
"I need answers tonight," he said in a low voice. "Wait until everyone's asleep then come to the chasm. There are no cameras there."
Reyna and Annabeth glanced at Percy.
"You let it slip, you go," said Annabeth. "I want to sleep."
Percy rolled his eyes. "Fine."
++++
Percy waited a minute before slipping out of bed, creeping across the remaining three feet to the door as he had the closest bed. Carefully slipping out, he was certain no one noticed him.
Four waited in the darkness of a particularly large outcrop, frowning.
"Where are the others?" He asked. Percy could barely hear him over the roaring of the chasm.
"Sleeping." Percy rolled his eyes. "They blame me for 'letting it slip' so I'm the only one who has to come."
Four's frown deepened, but he folded his arms and leaned against the rocks. "So what are you, exactly?" he asked.
Ah if only Annabeth was there to do the ultra-long explanation. She was good at it. Or Reyna. But neither of them were there, so Percy let it all out in one long breath.
"I don't know if you still know about the Ancient Greeks and Romans and their religion but they were polytheistic and had millions of gods that they worshiped and basically those gods exist and they fell in love with mortals and had kids and here I am."
Four stared at Percy, his eyebrows making his way up his forehead with every word Percy spoke. They had almost disappeared in his hairline.
"And you're from the past?" he finally asked.
Percy shrugged. "Yeah, that part is complicated," he said. "Basically--"
Suddenly, a faint scuffling could be heard over the noise of the chasm. Someone shrieked, but it was muffled, like there was something clasped over their face.
Without speaking, both Four and Percy peered around the rock they were leaning against.
On the other side of the Chasm, there were three boys, Peter, Drew, and Al. And they were shoving a body over the railing.
Tris.
Someone yelled and yanked back their arm, blood coursing down the side of it around bite marks. Tris thrashed, teeth snapping, and she drove her knee into Al's stomach, pushing him back with surprising strength. Her hands reached up and yanked the blindfold up when Peter seized his hands around her neck, lifting her over the railing. Tris choked as she hung over the river, her face turning blue.
The entire time, Four and Percy were running towards the scene. Four reached Peter and suddenly punched him while simultaneously kicking Drew.
In surprise, Peter released Tris and she tumbled into the chasm, her form limp.
Without hesitating, Percy took a running leap and dove after her.
Arms stretched out, he grabbed onto the first thing he could grasp of Tris-- her hair. Tris let out a yell as he yanked her away from the rocks, but it was cut short as Percy seized her shoulder and they plummeted into the river.
Immediately, the rush of the chasm was stilled. Froth vanished from the surface of the water, and it became as still and clear as a mountain spring. Not a single ripple splashed.
Torn from Percy's grasp when they hit the water, Tris flailed around, her eyes screwed shut, as she tried to find air. Percy quickly swam over to Tris, pulling on her arm once more. They rose to the surface slowly, a calm water geyser pushing them upwards like an elevator. Tris's eyes opened, her hair stringy and dripping wet in her vision, and she let out a shuddering breath.
Four stood on the railing, leaning dangerously close to the edge. By his feet, Drew and Peter lay unconscious.
Tris focused blurrily on him, blinking water from her eyes.
"Four," she croaked.
Percy leaned forward slightly, pushing the water platform towards the railing. Four seized Tris and pulled her over, holding her bridal style. Hopping on after her, Percy let the water drop and the river once again became a rushing current of death.
