Chapter 5- Old Enough

Sonny was in the backseat with Rose while Jungkook drove. He kept glancing at her through the rear view mirror. She was silently crying but kept wiping away her tears so Rose wouldn't see.

"Hey, I know you don't have a good relationship with your aunt but it's for the best. Rose will be safe. If she gives you any trouble, I'll deal with it. Alright?", he said, waiting for her response but she just rested her head against Rose's.

"Everything is gonna be okay Sonny. I'm gonna make sure of it", he said, grip tightening on the steering wheel.

It took about an hour to arrive in front of a light blue house, very maintained and clean. Sonny didn't want to get off because she didn't want to leave Rose with the evil witch.

Jungkook took out the bags from the trunk and waited for Sonny.

"You're gonna stay here for a few days, okay? Honestly, I'm not sure how long. But I'm not abandoning you. I'm coming back. There are things I have to take care of. I will see you really soon and have fun", Sonny took her out of her car seat and looked up at the house.

Jungkook walked passed her and motioned her to walk so they won't waste any time. They stood in front of the white door, Sonny hesitating to knock. She really didn't wanna leave Rose.

Jungkook took the initiative and knocked, watching as she tensed up. The last time she saw her aunt was during her mother's funeral. She spoke ill of her and even blamed Sonny for her death. But it wasn't like that. She just wanted to see her.

Once the door opened, Sonny stood straight and met eyes with the women who now seems like a stranger.

"You could've at least called instead of sending me a ridiculous message. Are you that much of a coward?", her aunt crossed her arms over her chest.

She hasn't changed one bit except more wrinkles. Her glare can always be very intimidating.

"I apologize for this last minute news and we appreciate you taking the time to look after Rose", Jungkook said, noticing Sonny avoiding her eyes.

"Maybe you. But her? She hasn't a single respectful and honest bone in her body. She likes taking advantage. Just like her father. I'm not surprised he's in some sort of trouble", she scoffed and looked at Sonny in disgust.

"Ma'am, we didn't come here to start arguments. And if you don't mind, we have a long way to go", he said.

"Yeah alright, give me the kid", she extended her arms but Sonny pulled away.

Her aunt gave her a look and told her she asked for her help. Jungkook placed his hand on her back and told Sonny that they have to leave now and that Rose will be okay. It took a bit of convincing but Sonny kissed her cheek and handed her off to her aunt before quickly going back to the car.

"I better get paid for this", her aunt said.

"Of course. I'll be responsible for that. Thank you", Jungkook nodded and walked towards the car.

When he got in, he glanced over at Sonny who had her head leaning against the window, softly crying. He wanted to make her feel better. His hand slightly hovered over hers but he bit back and started the car.

After a few minutes of driving, Jungkook made sure to let Sonny know the plan.

"We're gonna be staying at my place for the time being. You'll stay there while I go look for your father-"

"I wanna go too", she said, lifting her head up.

"Absolutely not. It's too dangerous. How am I doing my job if you come along?-"

"It'll be the same if you leave me by myself. They'll come looking for me. What if they figure out where you live?? They'll kill me. So no, I'm not gonna just stay there and wait and hope that everything will be okay", she talked back.

"They won't come looking for you there. You'll be safe. I can ask a friend of mine to watch you. He was in the same training academy I was in except he retired early to take care of his family. You'll be in good hands. And anyways, I won't be leaving right away. I need backup", he said.

"Why don't you teach me to fight? I can help. I-"

"No. I'm not risking it. I don't want to hear anymore. You're not going to change my mind. End of discussion", he said.

Sonny huffed out a breath and crossed her arms over her chest, looking out the window.

"I hate you", she whispered.

Once again, Jungkook's grip tightened on the steering wheel and stayed quiet, wondering why she can't ever realize that all he wants is for her to stay safe and unharmed.

Around three hours later, they arrived near a building that looked abandoned. She questioned the place and wondered if he's gone mad.

"Come on, it's this way", Jungkook grabbed their bags from the trunk and lead the way.

"Are you insane? I'm not staying here. This place is a dump", she said, peeking out through the window.

"Well this dump is where I live. And this is where you'll stay in the mean time. It's not that bad at all. You haven't even seen the inside", he entered the building, leaving her alone.

She looked around and felt a bit terrified. Not wanting to be eaten by bears or something, she quickly got out of the car and ran inside.

"It's even worse in here", she mumbled to herself as she noticed the worn out wallpaper.

Sonny kept looking around to find Jungkook. The lobby is empty, dirty and smells like a public bathroom. As she turned to the right, she can see Jungkook walking down the hallway . She caught up to him and followed him up the stairs.

Once he opened the door to his small apartment, the first thing that was in her mind is all the dust.

"Sorry. Since I'm usually working for your father, I hardly come here. And I know it's really small and there's hardly any space but you'll get used to it", he said.

"I doubt it", she mumbled as she headed towards the only bed near the windows.

There's no privacy, except the bathroom. The bed is hardly comfortable. And it's like they're in the middle of nowhere. From the view, it looks like the apocalypse.

"I'm hungry", she said.

"Um..well I don't really have anything. I'll go grocery shopping. I need to pick up a few things anyways. I just need to make a call", Jungkook stepped out of the room and closed the door, leaving her alone.

She took off her shoes and grabbed one of her bags so she can change into her pjs.

"Wonder if the water works", she said.

Heading towards the bathroom, she turned the faucet and sighed in relief as water came out...BUT there's no hot water.

"You have got to be kidding me", she groaned and grabbed her clothes, dealing with what she can get.

Sonny takes quick showers so by the time she got out, Jungkook had just finished his phone call. He stayed quiet as she walked across the room and took out a brush from her bag to untangle her hair.

"Aren't you gonna get food or something?", she asked, rolling her eyes.

"I am but that friend I told you about is coming to keep an eye on you. He'll be here in a few minutes", Jungkook said.

"No. I'm 17 years old. I know how to keep an eye on myself. It's not like I can go anywhere anyways. Just go", Sonny turned away to look outside but it's dark now.

"It's just gonna be for a few minutes. You two don't have to interact. It's just too risky to leave you alone. Try to understand. I don't want to argue with you. You say you're 17 years old so start acting like it", he fixed his jacket before taking out his wallet and checking how much cash he has on his person.

"Is there anything in particular you want?", he asked.

"...no", she answered even though she is craving those chocolate donuts.

About ten minutes later, there was a knock on his door. He made sure to look through the peephole before making sure it's the right person. When he opened the door, a very muscular man with a weird hair style and lots of tattoos, more tattoos than Jungkook, walked in while carrying two plastic bags.

"What's this?", Jungkook asked, trying to look in the bag but his friend lifted it up.

"Snacks. I'm not sharing", his friend said.

He might be older than Jungkook but he acts like he's in high school.

"This is Sangchul. He'll keep you company. I won't take long", Jungkook said to Sonny before leaving his apartment.

Sonny stayed on the bed while Sangchul sat down on a chair near the kitchen table. He took out what was in the bag and set them down on the table. While leaning back, he opened a bottle of alcohol and placed his right leg over his left, taking a big sip.

"So is your father really a lawyer?", he asked.

She didn't answer. When he realized that, he continued, "my father was a great surgeon. Until he decided to ruin his career by stealing some of the money the hospital made. Now I have no clue where he is. I remember how hard I tried to satisfy him by getting good grades and being involved in extracurricular activities but that never worked out."

Sonny hugged her knees as she thought about everything she did to be able to get extremely good grades so she can get into the school she wants plus creating a profile but she doesn't think that's gonna happen for her.

"I bet you're father is proud of you. I mean, you look like a person who is very successful", he said.

"No. I wouldn't say that. I'm the complete opposite", she said.

"Hm, I don't think I believe that", he said, then looking down at her work uniform.

She did the same but over at the amount of alcohol he had.

Why do people like drinking anyways?

"Want some?", he asked.

She met eyes with him and wondered if he was being serious.

"I have plenty", he continued.

Sonny got off of the bed and took hesitant steps towards him, grabbing the bottle and smelling it.

"I was never fond of the smell either but I got used to it. I have more if you finish it", he bent down to grab another bottle and opened it.

She took a small sip, making a weird sound as the taste went down her throat. Green apple?

Sonny loves green apples but why turn it into an alcohol flavor? She took more sips until she finished the bottle and went straight for another one, not slowing down one bit.

"Wow, guess you haven't tried this type before. Looks like we'll get along well", Sangchul smiled as she continued to drink.

Jungkook arrived a half hour later, carrying bags of groceries and other needs. He entered his apartment and noticed Sonny dancing around on the bed while drinking. Sangchul kept cheering her on as both were now really drunk.

"What the hell??", Jungkook placed the bags down and grabbed Sonny's hands, making her get off of the bed.

"Heyyy, whAt arE you DoinG? I'm hAvinG Fun", she whined, pulling herself away from him.

It's clear she's drunk. Her cheeks and ears are red, she's stumbling and her words are slurred. She laid down on the bed and hugged the pillow, closing her eyes. Jungkook turned to his friend and yanked the bottle from his hands.

"Why'd you let her drink? She's only 17", Jungkook stated.

"What? Really? She looks much older though-"

"Did you ask her age?", Jungkook asked.

"Well no. But she didn't say-"

"Please leave. I will have to reconsider the plans of someone watching her when I leave", Jungkook said as he began picking up the empty bottles of alcohol on the floor.

"Wait, I didn't know-"

"You must be insane for offering alcohol to an underage girl. What did you think you will get if you got her drunk?? You have a wife and kids. I thought you were smarter than that", Jungkook's muscles were more defined as he got angrier.

"Hey, I was only helping her out. It's not like I was gonna take advantage. She was telling me about what's been going on and it sounded like she needed a breather", Sangchul said.

"What are you talking about?", Jungkook asked.

"You've been her bodyguard for how many years and you don't know? Jeez, you know you're supposed to have a good relationship with the family", Sangchul said.

"Are you talking about her mother passing away? I already know that", Jungkook said.

Sangchul shook his head in disappointment and turned to look at Sonny who was now sleeping.

"I think you need to sit down. It's a very long story", Sangchul said.

After he explained everything and left, Jungkook stayed sitting down while watching over Sonny. Now that he knows everything, it makes sense why she acts that way towards him.

"I'm cold", she mumbled in her sleep.

Jungkook grabbed a blanket and placed it over her body, making sure she's now warm and comfortable. He doesn't want to fail her or her father.

He was about to stand up but she grabbed his hand, eyes still closed. He can feel her grip tighten and let go seconds later. She turned her body and hugged the pillow, sighing before slightly snoring.

All night, Jungkook thought about a plan and who to involve before rescuing Sonny's father. He had no sleep whatsoever. Around 6:30 in the morning, he went over to the stove, turned the knob and made breakfast. Not for him though.

"Hey, wake up. It's time to eat", Jungkook have her a pain reliever and some water as he lightly patted her arm.

Sonny groaned and placed the blanket over her head.

"I'm not kidding. Come on, you have to eat. I'm not letting this slide", he said, removing the blanket.

"You're so annoying", she muttered, pushing herself off of the bed before rubbing her eyes.

She walked over to the table, ignoring the water and pain reliever, and her eyes widened at the amount of food there is.

"I could've made my own breakfast", she said, sitting down on the chair.

"Yeah you could've but you would've been eating just a plain yogurt and a banana and that's not breakfast. Besides, how else are you gonna fight off the bad guys if you don't have the energy for it", he said, smirking.

"Wait, I'm going?? Really??", her eyes lit up and almost dropped the orange juice in front of her.

"Sure. I thought about it and with the training I'm gonna give you, you'll be prepared. If you can't handle it though, you're staying. Alright?", he said.

She nodded and promised to follow directions. But he said she can only go if she eats which she's hesitant about.

"I'll be okay with just two pancakes and the orange juice. This is too much for me", she said.

"I guess you'll be staying then", Jungkook turned to serve himself a glass of orange juice.

"That's not fair", she whined.

"Life's not fair. You take what you get", he said.

Sonny huffed out a breath and rolled her eyes before eating. He stayed watching her just in case she doesn't secretly put the food in a napkin and throw it out.

"Don't you have something better to do?", she asked.

"I'm doing it", he answered nonchalantly while looking through his phone.

"Playing games on your phone isn't gonna help get my dad back", she said.

"I'm not playing games. I'm messaging one of the security guards of the place where they took your father. I'm pretending to be a customer who's interested in getting loans. They're gonna let their boss know and I should be getting permission to go to their building or meet one of their people. If that happens, we'll go and take everyone down one by one but while getting information on where your father is. If this gets too dangerous, you're out, okay? I made a promise to your dad and myself that I won't let anything bad happen to you. I wouldn't forgive myself if that happened", Jungkook explained.

"I would say I don't see why you care if I get hurt but then I thought about how much you're getting paid. I swear my dad gives you more money than what he used to give me", she said.

He looked up at her, gave her a look, and put his phone away before saying, "you think I'm doing this for the money? I don't care how much I'm getting paid. That's the least of my worries."

"You're 22, right? Aren't you a bit young to even be a bodyguard? I mean, what about school? Don't you care about that? I know I really want to get into a school that'll be very beneficial for me in the future. Being a bodyguard would be far from my mind. You're risking your own life for people that mean nothing to you. Then you'll move on and forget about the people you once worked for. But I'm guessing you have no clue how that feels like right? Because we're the first family you get to work for. The contract lasts for five years. You have three years left. I'm sure you'll get sick of this family and probably terminate the contract before leaving. I don't blame you though. I'd probably leave too", she said.

"What is that supposed to mean?", he asked.

She took a piece of the pancake in her mouth and shrugged, "nothing."

Jungkook took his hand and placed it over hers before saying, "I'm not planning on leaving. You might be struggling with some things but I'm not leaving your side. I promise."

Her eyes went down to his hand and felt herself blush but quickly pulled away her hand and looked down at her plate.

"I'm done eating. I'm gonna shower because the smell of alcohol is making me dizzy", she said as she stood up and walked over to the bathroom.

'I shouldn't have done that', Jungkook thought before putting away the plate and the food.

After a while in the shower, Sonny looked at herself in the mirror and kept asking her what the hell is wrong. She groaned in frustration and ran her fingers through her now washed hair. She didn't wanna go out into the living room but she had no choice. So she slowly opened the bathroom door and walked towards the bed.

Jungkook is washing dishes, sometimes glancing over at Sonny who is combing her hair. He thought about what is going through her mind. Of course, her father.

"So, lets start training now. We can't waste any time and if you wanna go as well, we have to get started", he said, drying his hands on a cloth.

Sonny got off of the bed and asked where they're gonna do the training to which he answered with a plain "outside".

"What?..really? But what if there's like an aggressive stray dog or something? Or someone with a knife?", she asked, looking out the window.

"You're right. I wonder if there is anyone around who's professionally trained to kick some ass. I guess we're out of luck", Jungkook smirked as he got his things, opening the door and tilting his head to motion her to walk.

She rolled her eyes and called him a smart ass before walking out, Jungkook chuckling afterwards.
