Chapter 3- Something New

"Sorry. All positions are full."

Sonny sighed and walked out of the grocery store, resume in her hand. It's a Saturday and she decided to go job hunting but she's having no luck. She's been turned down five times already.

"I hate people", she groaned while pinching the bridge of her nose.

She continued walking, going through buildings to see if anyone is hiring but the only responses she'd get is either they're not hiring or they just hired someone so hearing that really pisses her off.

As she passed an all electronics store that had a bunch of televisions turned on near the window, she heard the announcer mention the contest being pushed back to another two weeks. Even though it does give her a bit of time to build her profile, she's still nervous she won't finish it.

"Should I just work on the profile instead of looking for a job?", she asked herself.

If she does that and doesn't win the contest, she won't have any money to pay for University. All this thinking is causing so much stress on her...but then again she's not the only student who's stressing over financial issues so she can't say it's not possible.

"Need something?"

An old man came out of the store, broom in his hand as he asked her a question. She looked away from the television screen and smiled.

"Sorry sir, I'm just passing through", she answered, nodding before walking.

He glanced down at her hands and noticed the resume.

"You lookin' for work? I can use a bit of help", he said.

"...but what would I do? I don't have any experience with electronics stuff", she said.

"You're young. I'll teach you everything you need to know to be able to answer customers' questions. But you need to be available two mornings during the weekdays because you need to make sure all orders are in for that week. You think you can handle it?", he asked.

Two Mornings??

Sonny knew if she missed more than a few days of school, points will be deducted and her grades will go down.

"Payment is $12/hour", he mentioned.

At her last job, her boss would hardly ever pay her even though it was supposed to be $9/hour. When she did get paid, she would cash her check and save some money in a jar while the rest went to bills.

"I'll take it."

"I need a printer that is able to connect to phones instead of having all these wires that will get in the way", a lady with a blue dress with white polka dots asked as she held her one year old son.

"Do you have a computer?", Sonny asked.

"I don't. That's why I'm asking if you have a printer that will connect to a phone", the lady said, somewhat annoyed.

"We have a few, mostly because there was a mixup during the orders, but all work perfectly well for what you're looking for", Sonny lead the way towards the third aisle and showed her which printers of her choice.

It was her third day working at the electronics store and first day working in the morning. It's quite busy and almost all of the customers are rude to her but it's understandable since she's new.

As Sonny checked on the electronic parts behind the cash register, the bell chimed from the door as it was opened.

"I'll be right with y-", she checked behind her and noticed Jungkook standing a few feet away.

"W-What are you doing here?", she asked, mind going blank as she didn't tell her father about the new job.

"Your school called me about your absence. When I tracked your phone, I wondered what you'd be doing here. You're working?", he asked, stepping closer until he's near the cash register.

"Yes I'm working. Can you please leave? If my boss catches me talking to you, I'll get fired", she said.

"I thought you were working at the restaurant. You never mentioned anything about this job. I'm supposed to know. If I tell your father something about you that's not true, I'll be the one to blame. What is going on with you?", he asked.

"I can't tell you because I know you'll tell my dad", she said.

"Then I guess I'm gonna have to report this to your father. You think he doesn't worry but he does. He always mentions how he wants you to have an easy life so you can always be happy. Instead you're creating problems by hiding things from him. How are you so okay with that?", he asked, placing his hands on the counter, tattoo peeking from his sleeve.

"Don't tell him...please. I'll tell you, alright? But during my lunch break, which is in like 25 minutes. Can you wait outside? My boss doesn't like when people hang around if they aren't buying anything", she said.

Jungkook stuck his hands in his pockets and walked outside, sitting on a bench nearby. Sonny sighed and wondered what excuse to come up with. As long as he doesn't say anything to her father, she's good..hopefully.

Exactly 25 minutes later, she let her boss know that she's going on her lunch break. She pushed the doors open and spotted Jungkook sitting on the bench, staring at a pigeon that was staring at him. Once she stepped closer, he stood up and handed her a brown bag.

"What's this?", she asked, peeking inside.

"Lunch. It's for you. Before you say anything, I want you to eat because I know you didn't eat anything yesterday. You do this a couple of times which worries me. You've lost weight. Sit down and eat", he ordered.

She scoffed and handed the bag back to him.

"No. I want to explain everything that way you don't have to snitch to my dad", Sonny sat down on the bench, crossing her legs.

"I can tell him you're not eating as well. That's just gonna make him more upset. So what do you prefer?", he asked, glancing over his shoulder, eyebrow slightly raised.

Sonny shut her eyes and tried not to yell. The headache she has isn't helping either.

"Fine", her hand snatched the brown bag away from his hands and took small bites from the chicken sandwich.

He reached into his pocket and took out a small can of orange soda which happens to be her favorite. Placing it beside her, he looked around and kept a slight distance.

The comment he made lingered in her mind. Did she really lose a lot of weight? She didn't even realize because all she thinks about is school, work, her drawings, and Rose. As she took a quick glance at her thighs, the gap is quite noticeable. Thigh gap has never been in her vocabulary before. Again not realizing that the corner of her lip is raised, feeling somewhat proud that she's losing weight again. And she finally achieved that thigh gap.

"I don't see you eating", Jungkook said.

Rolling her eyes, she continued eating, making sure to take small bites and slowly chewed to get full quicker.

"Can I talk now?", she asked, mouth slightly full.

"No. Not until you finish everything", he said.

"You can't force me to eat everything. I'm not even that hungry. If you force me to eat when I'm not hungry, I'll get sick and I'll tell my dad what you've been making me do", she said.

Raising an eyebrow, he bent forward to get down at her level and smirked before saying, "Great. Then I can let him know you're skipping school to work somewhere that won't get you anywhere in the future. He'll make you quit and focus on school like a normal teenager."

"You don't know, okay? You don't know that whatever I do is because I want to take care of my family. And I'm not trying to be normal. If I did, I'd be like everyone else. I want to do what I want to do. I don't need you telling me what I need. So go ahead and tell my dad everything. I don't care anymore", she stood up, trying to fight the tears, and walked passed him.

"Oh, and you can keep your disgusting sandwich. Next time don't add bacon", she spat as she threw the sandwich on the floor.

She stepped inside the store and punched back in, despite her break only being five minutes when she had a whole hour. Clearing her throat, she helped the next customer with a smile on her face.

Jungkook kneeled down to pick up the sandwich, staring at it before throwing it away. He stayed outside of the store for another hour or so before he left to pick up Rose since the babysitter had to go to her 2:30pm class.

It was around 5 in the afternoon when Sonny's shift ended. She was exhausted but glad that that job includes daily payments instead of waiting a whole week or two to receive a check. The whole way home, Sonny thought about what to say to her father since Jungkook more likely told him everything. Her hands were shaking, though the weather is quite sunny and a bit breezy. Will the money she earned even be worth it? Because Jungkook is right. Her father will make her quit her job and continue with school. Unless she explains why it's so important.

As she entered the house, she took off her sweater and backpack, placing it on the ground before walking down the hallway. She almost bumped into her father as he came out of his office.

"Hey Sweetie, how was school?", her father smiled, closing the door behind him.

Jungkook walked out of Rose's bedroom and met eyes with Sonny who seemed a bit confused. He continued walking, passing by her and turning left into the kitchen.

"It was alright. Is Rose in her bedroom?", she asked.

"Yes she is. We actually have plans. I made reservations at this five star restaurant. I heard the food is really amazing. So get ready and we'll be out of here in about twenty minutes", he nodded before walking towards his room.

"But...I'm not really hungry", she mentioned.

"You can get something small. Can you get Rose and put a sweater on her?", her father asked before going into his room.

As Sonny turned around, she got startled by Jungkook who was leaning against the wall, water bottle in his hands.

"..you didn't tell him?", she asked.

"Obviously not. You're choosing to carry your own problems. There's just one that really bothered me", he said.

"What are you talking about?", she asked.

"I'm the one who mentioned the five star restaurant to your father. He seemed to have agreed on spending more time with his daughters", he said.

She realized that he's very aware of her not eating and if she doesn't eat in front of her father, he'll get suspicious and worry like he did when she was 14.

"I really hate you", she said.

"I know you do. I don't need you to like me for me to care of your well being", he walked passed by her, leaving behind a trail of how his cologne smells.

"Goodnight. And have fun", Jungkook said as he took steps towards his bedroom, leaving her there to think about what she's doing.
