9. The Boathouse
Despite what I previously told Enea, I shared a lot of firsts with Deniz that summer, or should I say that first week at the beginning of summer. My first kiss, my first date. I count it as a first date, a whole day at the amusement park, despite Kai having to tag along.
"Don't you have to start packing soon?"
Deniz would be leaving for Athens the day after tomorrow. This would be our last night together. We spent most of the day at the beach, swimming and surfing and now that the day had come to an end we spent the last hour watching the sun go down the horizon, painting the water in gold and the sand warm underneath our bare feet.
"No, not yet." He said and intertwined our hands that had been brushing against each other as we sat side by side.
"I wish you would have told me sooner, that you liked me. Perhaps then there would have been more time."
"You're the one to talk to." I chuckled. "Did you wish for me to stand up on a table in the cafeteria and shout "I have a crush on Deniz Öncu!" That would have given everyone a laugh."
Deniz's thumb softly stroked the back of my hand. "I thought you didn't care about what anyone thought of you. It's the reason I like you."
"Well I do." I said, hiding my flustered cheeks.
He nods understandingly. "I still like you."
"Gee thanks." I said, bumping my side into his.
We sat quietly for a while, enjoying the last of the sunset. Once the night grew dark I grew cold.
"I should get you home before you catch a cold." Deniz let go of my hand and began brushing sand off his jeans. For a second I had a hard time catching my breath, my heart in my throat. I didn't want my last night with Deniz to end. What if when he goes off to Greece he finds a beautiful sun kissed girl who really doesn't care about what anyone thinks of her. That would mean the end of what hasn't even begun between us.
"I have somewhere we can go." I said, a slight hitch to my voice.
"Oh." Deniz said. He had risen to his feet ready to go. "You do?"
"I do." I said joining him by rising to my feet. He was staring down at me since I didn't meet his height, but by standing on my toes I could stretch my arms around his neck and bring his face closer to mine. I had gotten used to his kisses by now, soft and sweet. Not too eager but not too stiff, although my lack of experience I knew that this is the way I liked 'em.
Deniz looks at me transfixed almost hypnotized by the kiss.
"Come." I offer him my hand. " I have somewhere we can go. Somewhere where we can be alone."
*
It is dark inside the boathouse but not too cold. The walls protected us from the sea breeze, however, Deniz 'arms wrapped around my body generated enough heat. The smacking of our lips echoed throughout the room.
"Watch out!" Uncle Alvaro clearly used the boathouse as storage for the bait shop. Deniz had to hold me up to prevent me from tripping over the buckets scattered all over the floor.
"Over here." There is a freezer in the corner of the room stocked with god knows what. Fishguts perhaps? It's where we end up kissing like two slimy frogs, Deniz laying on top of me, his stiff erection thrusting against my thigh. His breath is warm against my neck and his teeth sharp against my skin. I don't want there to be marks tomorrow, however the closeness of our bodies, the entanglement of our limbs felt so damn good. I wanted more.
"Wait." Deniz rises to his knees, leaving me in the dark. His pupils are big and his lips are plumb from all the kissing.
"I don't have anything so we can't do anything."
"Huh?" I frown.
"Condoms." He whispers.
"Oh." I sit up. "Right, condoms."
Silence fell, our heavy breathing dialing down. The night seemed to be over, this, me and Deniz, seemed to be over.
"Other things!" A timid thought hits me. Deniz jumps at my sudden outburst.
"Sorry." I said embarrassed. I jump off from the freezer, Deniz is already standing up, having created distance between us. I close that distance by pulling the hem of his shirt and then dropping to my knees. Looking up, I see his eyes widened in surprise.
"Other things." I repeat, my voice is sensual. "We can still do other things." My hand traces the stiffness of what is hiding underneath his jeans. "If you like me too?"
Deniz 'breathing has picked up again. He can't get the words out but nods his approval. I am quick to pull down the zipper and he helps me unbuckle his belt. He stands fully exposed in front of me, his erected flesh pointing in the direction of the sealing. I exhale before my warm lips enclose around his bud.
"Fuck." Deniz throws his head back, basking in the pleasurable sensation.
"Fuck." He repeats, this time running his hand through my hair, eventually holding a bundle of it firmly in his grip.
I don't know if I'm any good, if I'm giving him any real pleasure. His moaning responses are affirmative, however it's a one way street when it comes to enjoyment. My knees had begun hurting once he came to an end, his warm fluid shooting into my mouth, some of it running down the side of my mouth. I spit it out in one of the buckets. I heard some girls like to swallow but I doubt I'll ever get into that.
"You're amazing." Pulling up his pants, Deniz helps me back on my feet.
My knees are still sore and so I rest my back against the freezer.
Deniz looks around the room. "A cool hideout this is." He said poking at the fishing nets hanging from the sealing.
"Uncle Alvaro is a hoarder. God knows what he needs all this junk for anyways, he barely goes fishing if you ask me."
"What's in the box?" He said, pointing to the freezer behind me.
"I dunno?" I shrug. "His storage of fish?"
"Or a dead body."
"That's not funny." Together we go to lift the top.
"What's this?"
"I dunno, but let's not touch anything. I know that Alvaro counts every...."
"Whata hell?"
I shut the freezer with Deniz 'startled reaction. He has got something in his hand, a bundle of tape, I thought.
"What is it?" I ask.
"Here bring me a knife." He gestured towards a toolbox nearby.
Reluctantly I hand him a small knife. "Deniz I don't think we should be touching anything, particularly since I'm not on uncle Alvaro's goodlist right now."
There is no stopping him. Deniz goes to rip up the bundle that he clearly recognized for something.
"It can't be." His lips quivered.
"What? What can't it be?" He has got his back turned to me, the bundle in his hand. Turning to me I am met with a pale gaze as if he had been struck by a sudden cold.
"Deniz? W...what is it?" I was a bit frightened by his ghostlike expression.
"Drugs." He uttered, almost too silently for me to catch it.
"What do you mean, '' I said, staring at the bundle in his hand. It contained a bundle of plastic wrap, with some white powder dusting off of it.
"This is drugs Eleon. Cocaine to be exact." Deniz throws the bundle back onto the freezer.
"A...are you sure? How can you even be sure?" For some reason my heart had begun to beat violently.
"My dad....." He swallows, barely giving the bundle a second glance, almost as if he despised it, feared it even. "My dad has told me all about it and the fact that it was stored in a freezer proves it."
"That doesn't prove anything." I said, defensively. "Why would Uncle Alvaro store drugs in his freezer?"
"You tell me Ellie? You were the one that brought me here."
"Yes, to make out, not to find drugs in an abandoned freezer in a random boathouse."
"Perhaps he sells it to his customers in the shop." The thought aroused him I could tell.
"You're delusional. How could you even prove that it is drugs, particularly cocaine?"
Deniz looks at the bundle, determination in his eyes. "I can't but my dad can."
"You can't be serious." I leap forwards, my arm preventing him from grabbing the bundle. He looks at me enraged but I don't care.
"This is a serious allegation Deniz, Enea's uncle could go to jail."
"As he should." He said coldly. "Or whoever junkie that stored his stash here."
There was no way that Deniz was gonna drop this, no way. I had seen this look of determination on him before, once in primary school. Someone had stolen a grape from his lunchbox. Even back then he had threatened the thief that his dad, a prime officer, would lock up whoever the guilty person was.
"Enea!" I blurred out, desperate for Deniz not to take matters in his own hands. "We should ask Enea what to do, it's practically his boathouse as well."
"Are you stupid?"
"Pardon?" I was taken back. Deniz Öncu had just insulted me, worse, called me stupid.
"What if Enea is in on this as well? We better not tell."
"Well, we are not going to the police with this." I said, hurdling up the bundle into my embrace.
"You're right!"
"I am?"
"We should look for more evidence. Let's open her up again." Deniz was quick to approach the freezer. But I stopped him by tossing my whole weight on top of it.
"No, I shout, please don't"
Deniz 'chest was seen rising up and down with excitement. More so than when I had been down on my knees, sucking his dick.
"You're right." He said. "We must be careful not to leave any fingerprints. We'll come back tomorrow, early, before my flight."
"You can't be serious Deniz?"
He was.
The walk from the boathouse into town was spent in silence. The bundle that was cut open had been chucked back into the freezer, at the bottom to be precise, Deniz advice of course. We stopped underneath a streetlight. Deniz's gaze fell onto the ground.
"I should probably get home. We should meet here early tomorrow."
"Deniz." I shook my head. "I wouldn't want to get anybody in trouble and we don't even know for a fact what is kept in that fridge and who put it there."
"Don't be so naive Ellie, who else could it be?"
I nod understandingly. However, after tonight I'm not sure how to feel. Would I want Deniz as a boyfriend? I think the fantasy of us being together was much much better than the reality of it. Not that these past few days had been a drought, but I couldn't shake the feeling that real love felt differently. My mother always made sure that everything around the house was done on time, the dishes, the laundry, helping Kai with his homework. All of this just so that all there was left to do in the evening was to snuggle up against my dad on the couch. I imagine that that's how true love really feels. Longing for a person so much that every thought and every action you took ensured you'd be one step closer to them. That's not how I felt about Deniz Öncu, at least not right at this moment.
"I understand." I said. I was ready to leave it at that, perhaps shake on it before we parted ways, when Deniz cleared his throat. "When I come back..." He coughed. "Perhaps we could get together again?"
"At the end of the summer?"
"And after that." He shrugged. His way of asking me to be his girlfriend.
I stepped forward and pecked his cheek. I watch it slowly transform into a soft shade of pink. "Let's see what tomorrow brings" I smiled, although I was left with a bad taste in my mouth.
"Don't worry." He said. "If it really is drugs in that freezer my dad will know what to do."
I nod before turning my back on him, heading in the other direction.
Leaving Deniz Öncu underneath those street lights that night had been one of the easier things in my life.
