24. It's over Enzo
Sara stepped on the gas. We were on our way to the lake.
"He's not answering." I sighed. Deniz's call went straight to voicemail.
"Try Gwendeline" Sara said.
I dial the number.
A beat.
"Hello?"
"Gwen, it's me!"
"Ellie?" Her voice was muffled. In the background a TV is broadcasting a football match.
"Yes, yes it's me, is Enzo there with you?" I said, cutting to the chase.
"Enzo?" She said and I imagined her frown.
"No, why?"
"Just hang up." The voice of Raul Ferndandez said somewhere in the background. Gwendeline sighed, the sound wheezing in my ear. "Just leave it Ellie, Öncu has it coming to him."
The line went silent and I was left with my phone pressed to my ear.
Sara's eyes left the road. "What did she say? Where is he?"
I wiped the tear irritating my eye and swallowed the last of my fear. "Enzo is alone, but he's got Deniz."
"Well, where did he take him, did she say that? Are they by the lake?"
I felt my body trembling but not with fear but with rage. I looked down as my phone vibrated in my hand, there was an incoming call from my mother. I looked at Sara who looked at me.
"If we hurry we might catch him." I said, dismissing my mother's phone call.
I didn't have a plan of action. Even if we reach the lake in time we have no idea of what Enzo is planning on doing to Deniz. What will he do to us if we try to stop him?
Enzo' crappy car was parked not too far from the lake, it was parked close to the spot where Enea and his friend held that party after the bike race around the lake.
Plan of action or not, I jumped out of Sara's parked jeep. I made her dim the headlights and approach the lake house in first gear. We were able to approach the cabin without anyone ambushing us.
"We should call the police." Sara whispers.
I shook my head. "If Kai made it home they should already be on their way up here."
"How? You never told them where we were going."
A virtual punch in my gut. How could have I been so stupid?
"Get me to the window!" I hissed.
"What?" Sara frowned.
"The window." I said, pointing to the one above our heads.
Sara nods and takes to the ground, supporting herself on all fours. "Do you see anything?" She said through gritted teeth. My weight on her back was demanding.
My eyes narrowed. The window was dirty but it didn't prevent me from making out two figures. One of the figures lay on the floor, whilst the other stood above it. It was Deniz on the floor, weeping and begging for mercy. His face looked devoured, swollen and bloody from a blow. Enzo stood above him grinning from ear to ear.
"Well?"
Sara spoke just as Enzo clenched his fist.
"I see them." I said, voice thick and heavy. I looked away. The window was sound proof, trapping the sounds of Deniz cries.
I jump off Sara's back and curse my unwanted tears. "I'm going in."
"Are you crazy?"
I made my way towards Sara's car, asking her to pop up the trunk. She does so but not without stating her concerns.
"We can't go in there. A full grown man versus two seventeen year old girls."
"I'll be eighteen in a year." I said, grabbing the tire iron.
"Ellie?"
My steps towards the cabin altered. "What?"
Sara was crying too, her cheeks glossy with tears.
I nodd assuringly, the tire iron clenched in my hand. "Wait for when the police arrive."
"Why can't we wait together?"
"Please Sara, otherwise it will be too late."
"Fine." She shook her head but made a run towards where the road cut into the lake area, where she would be able to signal any passing vehicle. I had already made my way around the cabin before Sara had made it to the road.
"It doesn't matter." I said to myself. There was a door around back and so I crunched below the window ahead of it. Once I reached the door my trembling hands clenched around the handle.
"Stop!" I shouted, heart in my throat.
At the time of my grand entrance into the cabin, that was really a small abandoned shed, Enzo had been crouching down beside Deniz 'limb body. Deniz 'breath hitched but he looked to be conscious, although his arm was twisted in an unnatural angle.
"Look who we have here." Enzo stood, a sour grin on his face. The slight shock of seeing me left him quickly. "If it isn't your little girlfriend Öncu?" He said kicking Deniz 'limb body on the floor. Deniz gave away a slight groan.
Enzo's eyes shifted to the tire iron that trembled in my hand. "You shouldn't have come here." he said and took a slow step towards me.
"It's over Enzo." I said, my voice shaking. I held the tire iron in front of me, ready to defend myself.
"Little, Ellie Muscotti. "He laughed. "Does Enea know that his girlfriend is out past her bedtime?"
I spat on the floor. "I couldn't care less."
"Oh?" Enzo said mockingly, tilting his head to the side. "How about your other boyfriend then." He grinned.
A shadow appreded over my shoulder, but before I could turn my head to see who it was, I was knocked to the ground, the tire iron ripped out of my hand. Enzo laughter echoed throughout the abandoned shed. I lifted my head to see Augusto Fernadez tower over, smiling as he held up Sara's tire iron.
"Check for others outside." Enzo orders and out of the shadows sprung two other boys whom I recognized from Gwedline's party, the guys that had brought Agusto and I all those beers. There were his friends, I thought. They were all Enzo friends. Augusto was with Enzo.
"Please!" I winced. I had a cut in my lip, causing blood to trail on the wooden floor below me. I tried making my way towards Deniz who lay unresponsive not too far from me.
"You shouldn't have come here." Enzo said, leaping forwards to get me to stand. He did so by lifting the collar of my shirt, strangeling me slightly.
"Let me go!" a voice shouted, a girl, Sara. The door flung open, one of Enzo's goons carried her inside.
"Ellie!" She gasped at the sight of me, at the sight of Agusto Fernadez with her tire iron and the sight of Deniz 'body crumbling up on the floor.
"Is he...?" She said,
"More children." Enzo sighed. "Look Deniz." He said, crouching down beside his body in order to lift his head. "Your friends have come to save you." He said, before letting Deniz head hit the floor with a pound.
Both Sara and I jumped at the noise.
"So." Enzo said, looking at us. "What to do with you two?"
Augusto Fernandez prevented us from taking a step back as Enzo approached. I groaned in disgust as he went to caress my face. ENzo breath was close enough for me to smell the alcohol.
"If it wasn't for the fact that Enea told me not to touch you." He said. "Good thing you brought a friend." He said moving on to Sara, grabbing her face and forcefully bringing her in for a kiss. Sara's eyes pressed together.
"No!"
Augusto Fernandez had been slow in his movements when I snatched the tire iron from his hands.
Enzo let go of Sara and held onto his head. I had managed to hit him, before Augusto tackled me to the floor.
"Fucking bitch!"
I elbowed Augusto to get him off me but just then Enzo had jumped me, pinning me back down. Something sharp was brought to my neck, a knife.
"Is this what you want, for me to kill you!" Enzo shouted, his warm spit splashing across my face.
"He man?" Augusto Fernandez came to a stand, He looked equally terrified like Sara who stood trembling beside her.
"Hey man." Augusto said, he looked hesitant to the knife Enzo had pressed to my throat. "I thought we were here to get Öncu?"
"Get me the gun, it's in my coat." Enzo said.
"Gun? No way man."
"Get me my fucking gun!"
"No man, I'm not going to jail for some homicide shit.." Augusto said. "Thought you said we were getting Öncu for ruining our business. You've taken things to far Enzo"
"Ellie?"
Whilst the cluster was going on around me, a frail voice called my name. Through the crease of my eye I could see him moving, Deniz, trying to get to me. Enzo had failed to notice this as he stood. "Fine." He said, putting the knife in his back pocket as he marched towards a leather coat that hung on a chair.
"Run Sara, run!" I shouted.
She had sprung out the door faster than Augusto could react.
"Fuck!" He said and made quick steps to follow her.
Enzo's eyes widened as he turned his head. his bloodshot eyes gazing at the room. Only Deniz and I remain.
Deniz had gathered enough strength to bring himself to his knees, his head resting against mine as we sat pressed together.
"Ellie." He whispered.
I shook my head, "It's okay, it's gonna be okay."
He didn't have enough strength to lift his head, if he did he would see the gun pointed towards our heads.
Enzo looked menace, pointing the revolver at us. He had no traces of a human left in his hollow eyes. His hand was trembling from the drug he was on but I had no doubt that he wouldn't hesitate to pull the trigger.
Like Deniz, I bowed my head not to let the view of Enzo and the revolver be my last image of the world.
"I love you." I whispered.
Deniz groaned beside me. He was falling unconscious again. Good, I thought, it would spare him.
I thought of Kai, I thought of my parents and I thought of Enea. My last thought would be of the people I loved.
"I love you.'' I whispered once more. Deniz supported his weight against me as he had fallen unconscious.
I clenched my body at the sound of Enzo adjusting the safety on the revolver. His breath was fast and heavy.
I looked up at the sound of a distant noise. Even Enzo turned his head towards the door.
"Sirens!" I gasped. The sound of sirens approached.
Swiftly Enzo turned his head to look at me. "You fucki..."
My breath hitched as all went white. I closed my eyes before the sound of the gunshot. There was a ringing in my ear. A swift wind passed my face, a coolbreeze. A thud vibrated the floor as something came down before my feet, a body. I was still able to think and so I figured that I was still alive. Enzo had shot Deniz first and now it was my turn.
"Ellie?" A voice spoke. I opened my eyes to large warm hands stretching to cup my face.
"Enea?"
He went to wipe away a tear with his thumb.
"Enea, you're here. "I cried. The sound of sirens increased. The weight of Deniz still lay beside me. He was still unconscious but not dead. But how?"
"Enea look out!"
A shadow moved behind him as he had his back turned to me. Enzo's hand was pressed to his stomach, preventing blood from gushing out of his gunshot wound. He received the weapon from where Enea had left it on the floor and rose to his knees. With the last of his strength he pointed the blood stained weapon towards us.
"Enea." I gasped but in the blink of an eye a gunshot was fired, hitting Enea in the back. His hands that cupped my cheeks clenched along with all of his muscles.
"No." I uttered helplessly as his body fell onto the floor, his arms letting me go.
The sound of sirens had stopped, but the blue light was blinding. Enzo had crumbled to the floor beside after firing the last gunshot. The police had heard it and dashed into the cabin with their weapons drawn. I had fainted the moment they sighted the two bodies of Enea and Enzo lying next to each other, like twin brother's sharing a bed.
