23. Last Kiss

It appeared to be a normal day, at least as normal as it could be. I was with Sara in her mother's smoothie café. It was just before closing. We were discussing who could have thrown a stone through The Öncu's kitchen window two days ago, when Kai suddenly Bursted into the café in a frenzy.

"Kai?" What are you doing here?" I said. He had been running all the way from the beach. Mom doesn't allow him in the water anymore and so he and his friends flew kites on the beach.

"Enea...is back!" He said, catching his breath.

"Back from...jail?" I said.

"How?" Sara frowned.

"His uncle..."

"Alvaro?"

Kai nodded. "He took his place saying he did it."

We were off in Sara's car headed to the surf shop. We arrived at the sight of Raul Ferndadez, Gwendeline and Enzo on their way out. None of them looked very pleased to see us pull up.

"You have a lot of balls coming here." Enzo said darting right at me as I stepped out to the car. I froze midstep, waving for Kai to stand behind me.

"Stop it Enzo, it's not her fault." Gwendeline said from where she stood.

"Yeah that's right, it's her boyfriend's." He spat on the ground near my feet. "That pig's son Deniz." A filthy smile roamed his face. "Don't worry we sent them a warning."

"You?" I said. "You smashed their window."

Enzo smiled complacently "I should come for you next."

"Me? What did I do."

Enzo's steps were uneven and his expanded pupils told me that he was under the influence of something. "It's your fault Enea's uncle is in jail right now."

I frowned. "How is it my fault if he confessed to your crimes?"

Kai pressed closer behind me as Enzo swung an arm at me but only to point at my chest.

"You should learn how to stay out of other people's business." He said.

"Come on." I said, waving for Kai and Sara to come through. We walked towards the shop, Raul Fernadez avoided my eyes perhaps in agreement with what Enzo just said. Perhaps this was my fault?

"He's really upset." Gewndeline said, nodding towards the shop.

I marked for her to step aside and let us through by squaring my shoulders.

The shop appeared abonded. No one had bothered turning on the lights and old buckets of bait had begun to smell.

"I should go see him." I said, turning to Sara and Kai as we stood at the bottom of the stairway to the loft. Kai looked to protest, opening his mouth only to close it.

Sara put a comforting hand to his shoulders. "We'll be waiting right here." She said assuringly.

"Thank you." I whispered.

My steps were rapid up the stairs.

The door to Ena's room stood open and although he had heard me coming he hadn't bothered getting out of bed. He lay on his back, fiddling with a white shell brought from his window seal.

"Enea?" I said, leaving the doorway and stepping into his room.

He avoided my gaze as long as possible. Only when I appeared at the foot of his bed did he acknowledge me.

"You shouldn't be here." He muttered.

"I...I came to see how you 're holding up."

He snorted. "How do you think I'm holding up?"

"Enea I..." I was brought back as he sat up abruptly.

"Does your parents know that you're here?" He asked.

I shook my head. "No."
"Good, let's leave it that way. Now go home Ellie."

"But I..."

His eyes were red from crying or perhaps he was on drugs?"

"There is no reason for you to be here, your friend might be looking for you."

"Friend?" I frowned.

Enea raised his head to look at me, his eyes reflecting nothing but pure hatred.

"Who Deniz?"

Enea shrugged. "He's already taken everything from me, he might as well take you too."

"Don't say that." I said, plotting down beside him on the bed. He rejected my hand that reached for his face, turning me the other cheek.

"Deniz doesn't have me Enea, you do." I said, my voice shaking.

"My uncle is in some deep shit all because of..."

"Enzo." I said, meeting Enea's surprise gaze with a serious one.

He shook his head. "Enzo is trying to help me."

"By throwing stones through people's windows? How mature."

Distance was created between us as Enea rose to his feet. "You're on his side then, you're with Deniz?"

"I'm not on anybody's side." I said, rising to my feet, failing to meet his height. As we stood like this face to face, something mellowed in his eyes.

"Ellie." He whispered, bringing a hand to cup the side of my face. His thumb slowly caressed my cheek. His eyes looked to my lips and then to my eyes, then back to my lips again. His arm around my waist brought me to stand on my toes and that's how our lips met. His tongue was eager against mine, devouring me in lairs between his hot breath. I stood breathless once we parted, observing the sudden passion in his eyes. "Deniz and his pig of a father has it coming to them." He said, voice deep and distant.

I frowned. "You're not..." I brought his hand away from my face. "You're not serious are you?"

The room had fallen dark by the emerging night outside and so Enea's expression was impossible to read. All I saw was his eyes batting at me and the steady breathing that expanded his chest.

"Enea please." I felt something emptying inside, a realization of some sort. Somehow I knew that I had shared my last kiss with Enea that night. I shook my head in disbelief, tears running down the creases of my eyes. "If Enzo and his friends are planning something please make them call it off. As crazy as it sounds, Deniz only believed to be doing the right thing."

"It's too late." He said. "They are already on their way."

I shook my head, but headed for the stairs. Sara and Kai stood waiting for me at the bottom.

"So..." Sara said. "What did he say, is he gonna be alright? What's the news about his uncle?"

"Keys" I said, ignoring her many questions.

"Why do you...?"

"Please Sara, do you have the keys to your car?" I cried.

"Yes, yes, they're in the car."

"Okay good. Kai?"

"Yes?" He looked up at me frightened but determined.

"I'm going to need you to run home."

"Home?" He frowned.

"As fast as you can!" I demanded. "Tell mom and that to call the police station and ask for Mr Öncu and tell him his son's in trouble, got it?"

Kai nodded his head, understanding the seriousness in his mission. He was on the way out when he stopped in the doorway. "But where are you...?"
"Just go!" I yelled. This had him out and down the street. If he ran fast enough he'd be home in twenty minutes flat. Meanwhile Sara and I got into her car.

"What's going on Ellie, where are we going?" She started the engine but without knowledge why.

"Where would they take him?" I cursed to myself. I should have asked Enea where they were taking him. I could always go back, I thought, looking out the window towards the shop. No, I shook my head. I don't want to see him, I don't want to see him ever again. I turned to Sara.

"Think! Where would Enzo take Deniz?"

She frowned. "Wait. You think he took Deniz?"

"Yes! Now help me figure out where he will go."

" I dunno..."
I sighed "Think Sara, think!"

"Er....The lake!"

I gasped. "The lake, of course!"
