20. Crashing Waters

"There is a call for you!" Kai shouted, from behind the door.

"I said leave a message!"

It was back to square one for me. I hid underneath the bedsheets anxiously pondering on how to do the right thing.

"But it's Deniz Öncü, he says it's important!"

"Go away Kai!" It was a good thing that he seemed to have come to his senses, Kai. Perhaps he had chosen to direct more of his anger towards Enea and not me. After all Kai looked up to Enea more, idolizing him in a way. To then find out that your idol is sharing saliva with your big sister can't be easy. I had been selfish in this way, I know, however I had worse things to deal with. It was true, Enea was one of them, a junkie, a criminal and drug dealer. He told me so himself. I couldn't possibly tell Deniz and so I left him a swift message telling him I couldn't go through with collecting the evidence, that he was right, it would be too dangerous.

"Mom and dad left for the store so you have to take me to the beach!" Kai still hadn't left the door.

"Ugh!!" I sighed. "Just go ahead without me, I'll be right there!"

What was I gonna do, lives were at stake. If Enea got arrested his whole life would shatter to pieces. He'd no longer be able to participate in the world tour and he'd never look at me the same, or so he said. He looked me straight in the eyes as we stood in the shadows of the boathouse. His reasons for dealing drugs was none other than to pay for his surfing expenses during the world tour. I had objected by mentioning the fact that he had several sponsors doing just that, paying for his expenses, not to mention his new surf gear.

"Yes, but they won't pay for food and housing." He had said, his voice deep. "Sponsorships comes with a price Ellie, if I stop performing they stop paying. I can't afford that"

"Can't afford." I muttered to myself from where I lay on my back on top of my bed. Somewhere in the distance Kai was heard shuffling things around.

If Enea had gone so far as to sell drugs, actual hard drugs, then perhaps he really was desperate and in that case I felt for him. His dream has always been to become a professional surfer and now he can be, with the help of drug money, of course. Still, his heart was in the right place, right? He never meant to hurt his uncle, me or Kai, he could never.

Speaking of Kai, I only then remembered hearing the front door having slammed shut.

"Shit, shit, shit!"

In my pajamas and slippers I was running, running towards the beach. I arrived in a frenzy, not too many people left wandering the shore.

"Come on Kai, where are you?"

I asked strangers if they had seen a little boy run around with a foam board.

"No sweetie, I'm sorry." Said a lady walking her golden retriever.

"Are you sure, he's about this tall..." I measured with my hand against my hip. "...and his foamboard is blue with alot of stickers on them." I remember helping Kai with the stickers. Mom had finally gotten him his own surfboard. Although foam, he had imagined he'd write the waves just as smoothly as Enea.

"Perhaps you should alarm the coastguards to look for him in the water." The lady said, walking off with her dog.

The water? I thought alarmingly. Kai wouldn't go into the water without anybody watching him, surely we've taught him better than that?

"Ellie!" Someone calls my name up the beach. To my surprise I turn my head and see...

"Deniz?"

His skin was a shade darker than when I last saw him and there was something shimmering from the lobe of his left ear, an earring, but yes, it was him. Deniz Öncu back from Greece.

"You didn't answer any of my calls. I went to your house and...I thought that was you, sprinting down the street dressed in only..." He looks me up and down. "...pajamas."

"Deniz I....I don't know what to say. You're here! How is this even possible? I thought you'd be gone for another couple of weeks."

"Well that was the plan but mom got sick. Actually she has diabetes and ran out of insulin and so we had to return home so that she could get her insulin pump. Now I'm here, with you." He wore a brimming smile on his lips. "I've been thinking about you alot, about our last night together. How have you been, did you have a good summer?"

"Erm..." I look around. The beach was almost deserted by now. The ocean breeze stirs my hair and so I have to remove a string of it from my face. "I've been good. Actually, no." I shook my head. "I lost my brother just now."

"Kai?"

"Yes, he's out here somewhere. I was supposed to take him to the beach myself but he went along without me. I dropped everything and came down here, as you can see..." I flapped around with my butterfly pajama pants.

"Do you need help looking for him, cuz I'll help."

"Please."

We walk up and down the beach shouting his name. "Kai!!! Come on buddy, where are you!" However, of no use, almost everyone had left the beach by now and if Kai was amongst them we would have found him by now."

"I'll call my dad," Deniz said, fishing up the phone out of his pocket.

"No!" I protested. The thought of getting Deniz dad involved in anything surrounding my life right now would be a nightmare. "Why bother when there is a coast guard?" I said, pointing towards the lifeguard tower.

Rushing over there we noticed that the hut was empty, no one was standing post.

"Maybe they have all gone home for the day." Said Deniz.

"Ugh, this can't be happening." I slumped down against one of the poles holding up the tower. Deniz joins me in the sand, bringing a comforting arm around my shoulder.

"We should get you out of here before you freeze to death." He said, referring to my not so wind proof pajamas.

"We can't leave without Kai. My parents would kill me." I cried.

"Clearly he has left the beach, where else would he be?"

Suddenly it struck me.

"What?" Deniz saw how it lit up my face. I rose from the sand and began climbing the lifeguard tower.

"Look out there." I said pointing towards the horizon. Oblivious, Deniz looks to the drifting waters.

"Towards the cliffs." I said, directing his attention slightly to the left, where the ocean waves crashed against a set of high cliffs.

"It's where Enea and his buddies surf. The waves are bigger there."

"You don't think he went there do you?"

"It's the only place left to look."

We got into Deniz 'car and headed towards the cliffs. I feared more and more what Kai had gotten himself into.

"I swear to god, I'll kill him." I said and I knew exactly how I would do it. I'd drown him myself, I thought.

"Don't worry." Deniz said, letting one hand go off the steering, placing it on my knee, patting it slightly. It was subtle, still, his touch caused a swarm of goosebumps to appear on my forearm.

The sun had set in the horizon where the cliff overlooked the ocean. There were a few dots in the water, surfers waiting to catch their next wave. Deniz and I had to climb down the steep rocks just to reach the water and there he sat, Kai alongside his foamboard, observing the other surfers in the water, admiring them.

"Kai!" I shout at the top of my lungs. A frightened expression when he goes to turn his head.

"You better get away from there." I said, urgeing for him to come back to where Deniz and I stood, safe from the waves crashing against the rocks.

"Kai, I'm serious, don't make me come get you!"

"Please, you wouldn't do anything for me even if mom and dad paid you to."

His words brought me back. "What's that supposed to mean?" My voice drifted in the wind, but Kai had heard me.

"I mean that all you care about is boys, about kissing Deniz and Enea, It's because of you right, that he won't teach me how to surf?"

My heart stops "How do you know about me kissing Enea?"

"It doesn't matter, All I know is that you were much more fun before, when all you cared about was surfing, with me."

"Oh, Kai." I sighed, tears glistering in my eyes.

"It doesn't matter, I've learned to take care of myself. I even learned how to surf like Enea, here, I'll show you."

"Kai no!" I panicked, watching him grab his board and jump into the water. And for a second he was gone, no sight of him as the waves hid both him and his board.

"That's it, I'm going after him." Said Deniz, unbuttoning his shirt.

"Deniz no, you'll die." Just as I go to stop him, Kai appears with the rise of the ocean, laying flat on stomach, the surfboard holding him afloat.

"Kai, please please come back!" I shouted, however he had to paddle too far out to hear my voice, it was lost in the wind.

I turned to Deniz who looked as scared as me. "What do we do?"

"I'll call my dad." He said taking a step back for the phone call not to be disturbed by the wind.

I kept my eyes on Kai and watched how he drifted further and further out. The other surfers had yet to notice him. It was only when one of them were paddling back from riding a wave, that he noticed the little blue board and Kai desperately trying to cling onto it.
"Hey kid, what are you doing?" The surfer turns out to be Enzo, Enea's friend. And not far behind him was Raul Fernadez who had also spotted the little blue board rising up and down with the ocean waves. They understood that Kai had no business being out there and looked to the cliff to see if anyone was with him. That's when I caught their attention and started waving vigorously with my hands.

"Please help!" I shouted, I had blown my vocal cords by now. Nevertheless they had understood and I was relieved to see both of them padeling their wave towards Kai. Unfortunately Kai had noticed this too, which triggered his attempt to prove himself even more.

"Kai nooo!" I watched his board rise with the wave and miraculously Kai paddled in and caught it. He caught the wave and rode it like he had done it thousands of times before.

Instead of saving him Enzo and Raul began to cheer, alerting their friends, amongst them Enea, who had failed to see it all unfold until he looked to the cliffs and recognized me as well as the boy that was Kai. I watched him paddle to catch the next incoming wave but it was too late. Kai looked to be struggling with the wind that drifted his board towards the cliffs and before the two collided Kai abandoned ship.

"Kai noo." I acted out of pure instinct, a sister going to rescue her little brother. Deniz had only turned away for a minute. One second I was there and the other I wasn't.

The water was so cold without a wetsuit. My soaked pajamas weighed heavily on me and only slowed me down as I tried to swim towards the little blue board that I knew still had Kai attached to the other end of the footrope.

There was water crashing down around me, causing me to lose sight of Kai and his board. Just as I thought I had reached him, the wave would push me in another direction, further away, forcing me to start over. I had no strength, my body had gone numb in the water and that was it I thought. I would lose Kai and drown myself trying to rescue him.
