13. Kai's Discovery
"Ellie, there is a call for you." Kai's voice spoke from behind the door.
"Go away!" I had locked myself inside of my room ever since the party by the lake two weeks ago. Except for feeling like shit, I feared that what Deniz had been suspecting was true, Uncle Alvaro was a drug dealer. Poor Enea, I thought. His only living family is a criminal. How would he cope? Or better yet, who is gonna tell him?
"It's Deniz Öncü." Said Kai, still standing behind the door.
"Leave a message!" I shout from underneath the bedsheets. I had yet to open his snapchats and the fact that there were several wasn't a good sign.
"It's the third time he's calling Ellie, please leave him a message yourself." Kai was heard descending down the stairs. Dad would go on to take him to the bait shop. Enea has been receiving new surfing gear from his sponsors to have him all set for the world tour starting next week. Kai had been one of many locals to go down there and check them out and fangirl over Enea's first inputs after trying them out. I have been staying away from the baitshop, from uncle Alvaro. How could he do this to Enea just as he is about to have the career break of his life?
There is another knock on the door, it's mom and she lets herself in.
"Honey?" She said in her most loving voice. "How is it, are you still feeling under the weather?
"Yes." I groan from my hiding place under the sheets. There is a dip at the end of the bed and soon mom goes to stroke my back.
"You know, It's better for you to get up and face the day instead of fighting what is inevitable."
I poke my head from up under the sheets. "And what's that supposed to mean?"
Mom's face is full of compassion like she understands my pain.
"I'm sure you'd feel better spending time with Enea during his last few days here, rather than distancing yourself."
I am silent, trying to read my mothers uninterpretable expression.
"So you know?" I said, returning to the sheets.
"That you like him, yes. I am your mother. I know everything about my children."
"Hah!" I laugh.
"You don't believe me? Well, I know that there is a sweet boy called Deniz Öncu who is desperately trying to reach you on the homeline."
"So?"
"Well those phone calls from Greece can't be cheap."
I return from underneath the sheets, my eyes red with tears. "How do you know when to do the right thing?"
Mom looks to ponder the question. "Well it depends on what the right thing means for the people involved. Does it mean being truthful to them or will it only damage them?"
"What if it does both?" I cried.
"Well then it is a matter of doing what is best for them and not yourself." She said and got up and left the room. I reflected over what had been said.
Kai and dad were still at the bait shop by five o'clock and so I decided to join them. I could spot the boathouse as I came down the gravel road overlooking the seaside. What a coincidence seeing Uncle Alvaro empty a bucket of fish guts over the docks. He looked dreadful wearing his striped bowling shirt with those fishing shorts of his. Once he spotted me coming down the hill he greeted me with a smile.
"Eleon, surprised to see you here. Your brother says you've been wrestling with the flu."
"I'm all better now, thanks." I said short, observing the criminal that stood before me. The way I kept it simple must have made an impression on him because an awkward silence lingered between us.
"Well...I best get this cleaned up." He said waving the bucket that had contained the fish guts. I watched him return to the water. I went on to the shop.
"Ellie!" Kai greeted me with an unexpected cheer. Heads turned my way. There was Dad, Kai and all of Enea's surfing buddies, including Enzo, I guess they made up.
"Eleon, come come, have some food." Dad had set up a BBQ around back and was feeding all of the hungry spectators.
"It's okay, I'll have some later."
In the middle of the shop lay a deck of surfboards along with a handful of gear to go along with it. The crowd had made a circle around it, observing all of the items impressingly.
"It's from the sponsors." Kai enlightened me. "Enea is out trying some of the boards now." And as he said this, emerging voices entered from around back. Enea and Raul Ferenadez, deep in discussion about the feeling of the ocean waves underneath the boards. They had come straight from the beach, dripping water onto the floor. Our eyes met and he made his way across the room.
"Ellie you came?"
"I did." I muttered slightly embarrassed that he had called out for me amongst the eyeing crowd.
"I'm glad you're feeling better."
"You should have seen her." Kai budged in. "She looked like a zombie coming down for food, which only happened once a day."
"Shut up Kai!" I said, as the crowd around us laughed. Enea shot Enzo a look, knowing that I hadn't been the same since the incident at the party. Enzo got the message and wiped the smile off his face.
The night turned out to be better than I thought. Mom was right, I would have regretted not spending these last few days with Enea knowing he'd be far away soon.
"Ellie, could you help me?" Kai came forward with a plate of BBQ in his hands. His white shirt was stained with grease and his little hands were glistening with sauce.
I sighed. "Come on, I'll help wash you off."
I took him upstairs to Enea's room. In the adjoining bathroom I helped wash him off.
"Make sure you use soap before washing your hands." I left him to it, finding more interest in Enea's collection of shells. He had them stacked alongside the window frame. It was adorable. I couldn't help but to bring my attention towards his closet, the one Enea used for both clothes and storage of surfboards. I bite my lip remembering what I saw through the gap in the door, Enea naked, perfectly sculptured down to the structure of his v-line. And let's not forget the size of his...
"What's this?"
Kai had disrupted my fantasy by emerging from the bathroom, a bag containing little blue pills laying in the palm of his outstretched hand.
"Where did you get these?" I said, hurrying to snatched the bag out of his hand.
He shrugs his shoulders. "They fell out of the pocket of the pants laying on the bathroom floor."
"What?" I exclaimed. "Show me."
Kai takes me back to the bathroom. "I was looking for a towel to wipe my hands with and as I lifted the pants, they fell out." He said, pointing to the bag of pills as well as a roll of money that had rolled onto the floor."
"Come on Kai, we best get out of here." My heart was rising. I put the pills back in the pocket of the jeans that clearly belong to Enea. After all, it was his bathroom.
"Is it medicine?" Kai asked, as we hurriedly descended the stairs.
"I dunno Kai but it is time for us to go home."
I grabbed Kai by the hand and went out back to tell dad that we should leave. I'd make up some excuse about coming down with a fever again, unfortunately dad stood chatting with none other than Uncle Alvaro.
"Shit." I cursed.
"You said a bad word!" Kai gasped beside me.
"Shit is not a bad word."
"Oh." His shoulders withered. "Can I say it?"
"No, let's go." I dragged him inside.
"Ouch, Ellie you're hurting my arm."
Just as we moved across the shop I bumped into Enea who had been chatting with Gwendeline and Raul Fernadez.
"Hey, guys. Where are you hurrying off to?"
"You know." I coughed. "Kai has got to get to bed by nine so..."
"No I don't." He frowned, yanking his arm out of my grip. "It's summer, mom lets me sleep whenever I want."
"Well that's not true Kai, everyone needs their beauty sleep." I said this coming off as very nervous.
"Ellie what's going on?" Enea could see through it. "Why are you in such a rush?"
"She wants to talk to Deniz." Kai teased.
"Shut up Kai, Deniz won't be back from Greece in weeks and you know that."
"Deniz?" Raul chuckled. "You mean Deniz Öncü?" He looked to Enea, who remained silent but confirmed it with a slight nod to the head.
For some reason I found myself bowing my head in shame, hiding my face behind a curtain of hair.
"How do you even know that guy, isn't his dad some kind of..."
"Narc..." Enzo had filled in. "His dad is a fucking narc."
"Wow, hey. There are children present." Said Enea, hopefully only referring to Kai as child, however he had said children, a plural. God I felt so embarrassed.
"Anyway, we better get going, right Kai."
"Fine, I'll go get dad."
"Ellie, I can give you guys a ride if you like?" Enea was being so sweet, his friends on the other hand.
"Or you could get Deniz to pick you up in his dad's police car."
"Come on Raul, that's not funny." Said Gwendeline. I could tell that she felt sorry for me, the way they all were taunting Deniz. Apparently he was a well known ass amongst the lawless, mainly because his father had probably arrested all of them at some point in time. Perhaps for minor marijuana possession, which was known amongst some of the surfers. Not Enea, I thought. He took his sport seriously, an opportunity for his future.
Kai returned with dad. "What's this kids, you're already ready to leave?"
"Girls and their hormones." Kai said bitterly.
"Let's just go." I muttered, ushering Kai and dad out of the bait shop.
