Early morning sunlight poured through the window, casting a golden glow inside the quiet room that reflected off the cold sheet in contrast to the warm day. The bed looked neat without the person, and the pillows were neatly arranged near the headboard.
Below the room, there was another bedroom where a couple occupied a bed. The couple lay on the bed and slept under a light breeze provided by the high ceiling fan. Suddenly a loud clinking sound of keys startled awake the sleeping lady. Beside her, her husband snored softly, oblivious to the said sound. She narrowed her eyes at the noise, slowly raising herself in the sitting position, and leaned over the nightstand and took out her glasses.
"What's the time, Rani?" Her husband groaned in a sleepy voice.
"5.30 AM, go back to sleep. You still have a few more hours before you have to report to the court." She put on her glasses, adjusted her nightie, and moved towards the sound. The hallway from her bedroom to the living room looked like a tunnel with an open light at the end that reflected from the living room window as she walked towards the living room. Her feet patted softly against the cold marble, making her regret leaving the room without her slippers.
An angry sigh left her lips when she caught a figure moving across the hallway sneakily. The person tiptoed towards the stairs silently without making any noise.
"Prathyuksha! Is this the time you come home, young lady?" Rani questioned, crossing her arms across her chest angrily. The tall figure stopped on her track, one foot on the ground and another on the step, ready to climb the stair.
Wincing and cursing to herself, Prathyuksha turned around to face her mother, who looked dead into her eyes without any mercy. Her obsidian eye guiltily blinked while her lips stretched in a sheepish smile.
"Good morning, ma!" Prathyuksha greeted, walking towards her mother to hug her. The press ID card around her neck swayed as she moved. In contrast to her dark black formal shirt, the clip holding ID card and the robe together sparkled when the light fell on it.
But her mother moved back, avoiding her when she forwarded her arms. Shaking her head at her mother's stubbornness, Prathyuksha opened her bag and pulled an item, offering it to her angry mother, whose expression slipped for a second when a brown square caught her eye.
"Did you get it?" The mother and daughter flinched when a loud voice echoed through the room. Prathyuksha turned around to see her father, Manohar walking towards them as he eyed the parcel excitedly.
"You aren't going to ask her why she is late?" Exasperated, the lady asked, throwing her arms in the air as she looked at the father-daughter duo who indulged themselves in the parcel.
The duo royally ignored her as they moved to the kitchen. Rani followed angrily to see them opening the original Tirunelveli halwa parcel. Her husband looked love-struck as he waited for their daughter to transfer the content to the plate.
Seeing her husband fetch the spoon from the counter, Rani interrupted, "Stop right there. You haven't brushed yet!" Manohar's face fell as he watched her snatch the plate out of his hand.
Now pointing at her daughter, who was just walking back to her room without anyone's notice, she repeated the earlier question. "And you didn't answer my question yet. Do not even think of going to sleep now. In a normal house, people go to bed at ten and get up at six, but in this house, you sneak out at midnight and return after two days!
If I question your father, he won't answer me. Do you know how I find where my daughter is? In the news! I have to sit before the TV for hours, so I know about your whereabouts because my daughter switched off her mobile for two damn days!"
"I'm sorry, maa, but that's my job, and I have to be present and report back. My channel gave me this opportunity, and I would have missed my chance for promotion if I turned it down!" Prathyuksha exclaimed, closing her eye, feeling a headache rise. All she needed was uninterrupted eight-hour sleep, and she could answer whatever her mother hurled towards her. Her eyes snapped up when she heard a sob break free from her mom.
"Promotion? Three people were murdered in the middle of the street in daylight, and I know my daughter is there risking her life for just a piece of information. I have only a daughter! How do you think I felt when I saw the news?" Rani bellowed, palming her face as tears streamed down her face.
Manohar sighed gently, circling his arm around his sobbing wife as his daughter looked at them guiltily, but he quickly shook his head, not wanting her to feel bad. It's her job, and they knew the risks of it.
"Doesn't your channel have on-field reporters there?" He questioned; even though he knew the answer, he wanted his wife to hear their daughter's explanation before jumping to conclusions.
"No pa, it was a sudden assessment. Two girls were abducted from Coimbatore to Tirunelveli because of a family feud. One of the girls was my friend's sister, and she called me directly when she felt someone following them. I quickly informed the police and my channel. The call came for my number, so the channel asked if I wanted to lead, and I accepted. Police from Coimbatore were also there with us." Prathyuksha calmly explained to her parents, who looked relieved after hearing that the police also accompanied them.
Being a journalist comes with many cons, but it's her childhood dream to become a journalist. Her father being a lawyer influenced her interest in politics and law, and mom being a professor and speaker played a significant part in her being outspoken and bold to speak in front of the crowd.
"I'm so proud of you, Prathy!" Manohar smiled, opening his arms for his daughter, who ran to him with a grin. Her talkative little girl was now grown into a beautiful, fearless woman. Whenever she appeared on TV or her article was published, he doesn't fail to share it with his juniors and colleagues.
"At least warn your daughter to inform us before she disappears out of nowhere," Rani grumbled, looking at them from her corner of the eyes as she opened the windows in the kitchen, letting the sun glimmer in.
The affectionate duo broke apart, casting her a glance, and burst into giggles. Her mother is one grumpy lady in the morning before her morning coffee.
"What's so funny?" Rani glared, placing her hand on her hips with a huff.
"Nothing, ma! If your inquiry is over, shall I go to sleep?" Prathyuksha innocently shook her head, her dark hair swinging at her moment, looking like a cute fluffy puppy after a bath.
"Hmm, go to sleep. I'll wake you up when I leave for my afternoon lecture." Her mother nodded in agreement, closing her eyes as she prayed before switching on the stove. Her movement halted as if she remembered something.
"Prathy!"
Upon hearing her mother's call, Prathuksha paused, her brow raised in confusion and her body leaning against the glass railing in fatigue as she awaited her response.
"You said the Coimbatore police accompanied you, umm- did the new DCP come with you? Did you meet him?" Rani smiled in anticipation, controlling her excitement as her daughter's face lit up in recognition.
"DCP Siddarth Krishnan? No, ma. He took charge just before that day, so he was busy meeting his higher-ups, but few constables came with us. Why are you asking?" She narrowed her eye when her mother's face fell like a child denied candy.
"Nothing, nothing. You quickly go to sleep!" Rani rushed to answer before her daughter suspected anything. She gently pushed the sleepy Prathy forward, urging her to proceed to her room.
"Rani ma, is there anything you would like to tell me?"
"No, nothing!" Prathy nodded, still suspicious as she glanced down to see her father hiding his face behind the newspaper.
'There's definitely something fishy!'
.
.
'What are they hiding?' Prathyuksha thought, rolling on her bed to find a comfortable position after a quick hot shower. After she found the right position, she squealed happily. As she closed her eyes, feeling the exhaustion hit her like a truck from the sleepless night travels. For some reason, the new DCP's name echoed in her mind before she fell into her dreamland.

My darlings from Yours from Birth, welcome to another journey with me. Love you <3
If you are new to my works, my books usually have these,
* Happy chapters (could say all the chapters!)
* Caring and sweet characters. (My fantasies are my characters.)
* Tamil cultural references (Only a few, and I will explain everything, so don't worry about not knowing them!)
* And a ton of romance! (I live for those so, there would be unlimited of that!)
* Happy ending! (Of course, I'm a sucker for that!)
Doesn't have;
* Unnecessary misunderstandings! (Eww!)
* Unreasonable characters. (Hate that)
* Sad scenes (who wants that in the book too!?) (Occasionally, I enjoy angst, so don't judge me by my happy chapters!0
* Cold main character (not for now, maybe in the future!)
~
