chapter 14; conversations and catastrophes

Harry's POV

The smile on Draco's face is enough to make me smile too. His entire face lights up and I see relief flood his eyes.
"Thank you, really. You don't understand how much this means." He rests his head on my shoulder and his hair tickles me. He pulls Teddy onto his lap and we sit quietly, watching as an owl flies by.
"Sorry about your owl. I don't think I've ever said that. I'm sorry about Sirius, too. And Professor Lupin, and Nymphodora, and Weasley's brother, and Dobby, and everyone else. I'm sorry you had to go through all of that. I'm sorry I was a part of it. I'm sorry that I did it by choice. I'm sorry that your entire life has been a mess and I really didn't help that whilst we were growing up. I'm sorry we were forced to grow up too soon. I'm sorry that it's been a year since the war and I've never said that."

He takes his head off my shoulder but I pull him back into a hug, Teddy laughing as he's squashed between us.
"I'm sorry too. I'm sorry that you blame yourself for the horrible things that you thought were right at the time. I'm sorry that you were raised to dream of being a Death Eater above anything else. I'm sorry that you aren't able to be with your family anymore, regardless of them being the people that they are. I'm sorry that you hear the screams of the people that couldn't be saved. I'm sorry that your father will never see you as anything other than the family heir."
"It's not your fault."
"It's not yours either. It's just one of those things."
He laughs quietly, "Did you really just say that? You're amazing, Harry Potter, you really are."
"I do try."
That makes him laugh harder, causing both me and Teddy to laugh.
We're laughing so much that we don't notice Ron until he sits next to me.

"What's so funny?" He asks.
"Nothing, mate. How've you been?"
He smiles, but his eyes are sad. "I'm alright. Still not really over anything that happened, but I'm alright. You?"
"I've been better, but moments like this help. Just sitting with friends, not doing anything in particular."
"Hungwy." Teddy suddenly says.
Draco stands up and takes Teddy in his arms. "I'll get some food for him, let you two catch up."
"Thanks, Draco."
He heads back up to the castle and Ron gives me a questioning look. "Since when have you two been on a first name basis?"
"Since last night."
"Ah, last night. What actually happened? Or do I really not want to know?
"You don't want to know, but it's not as bad as you probably think it is."
"Well I'm glad to hear that!"
We both laugh.
"So, uh," I ask, "does Ginny still hate me?"
"Merlin, I don't know. She won't talk to me, probably because I'm not angry with you. She's not against you being gay or anything, but you broke her heart. Personally, whilst I'm not keen on the guy you seem to be overly interested in, I don't have anything against you. Like I said before, I can't hate you for something you can't control."
"Tell that to her. I do find it funny though, that her two longterm relationships have both ended with the guy being gay."
"Yeah, that is funny." Ron says, laughing. "I never expected Dean and Seamus to get together, they just seemed so close as friends. They're a good match, though."
"They are." I agree. "I want to have that chemistry that they have. Not with you, though. You're probably the equivalent of them to me."
He laughs again, "You're great, but I'm taken."
"Not to mention you're straight."
"Yeah, that too."

We talk for a while, just like we used to. It's nice, sitting and discussing everything. We lose track of time and the next thing we know, a few hours have passed.
"Bloody hell, look at the time! We should head back to the castle." Ron exclaims.
We get up and walk up the steep hill to the castle.

***

Ash and Parkinson are with Hermione. We walk into the room and I notice Teddy playing with toy dragons on the floor. He smiles when he notices me.
"Hawwy! Play dwagon!"
I sit on the floor next to him and he hands me one of the toy dragons.
"You know, Ted, I once fought a dragon."
He giggles and shakes his head, "No!"
"I did, when I was fourteen."
"Ah, yes." Parkinson says, "Fourth year. The year that things started going to crap."
Ash looks at her dissaprovingly, "Language, Pansy! There's a child here."
"Oh, like he's really going to pick up a bad word after hearing it said once."
"Cwap!"
Everyone laughs, and whilst I tell him off, I can't not smile too.
"Teddy! You don't say that word!"
"Dway says it."
"Well, Draco's a very naughty boy."
"Am I, now?"

I turn to face him, "Don't start turning everything I say into something sexual."
Draco sits next to me on the floor, "Aw, come on, babe."
"Don't call me babe."
"Sorry, babe."
"I hate you."
"Love you too, babe."
"What do I have to do to make you stop?"
"Kiss me, babe."
I peck his cheek, earning a chorus of "aww" from the others in the room.
"Properly, babe."
"What do you mean, properly?"
"On the lips, babe."
I blush, "Not gonna happen."
"Well then, I'm just going to keep calling you babe, babe."
I groan, annoyed and slightly embarrassed."Do I have to?"
"Right now, babe."
"Are you just constantly horny or something?"
"Stop stalling babe, just do it. It's not the first time and it won't be the last."
I take a deep breath before muttering, "Oh, fuck it."
I kiss him. Hard. In front of everyone. He kisses me back. Hard. In front of everyone.
They cheer as we kiss. It doesn't last long but it's pretty damn good to finally kiss him sober.
We stop and he smirks, "Does this mean we're together?"
I grin back at him, "I suppose so, yeah."

"Shit."
"Jealous, Weasley?"
"Shut up."
"What is it, Ron?" Hermione asks.
"Well, there's this device that aurors get given. I just got a message on it. You see, the head auror can send all the other aurors a message on it. It's quite clever actually, and useful."
"Just get to the point, Weasley!"
"Uh, right. Well, um..." He looks at me, then at Draco, then at the floor. "Lucius Malfoy has just escaped from Azkaban."
