4| The Beach, Growing Closer

This is the fabled "beach episode" but it's the beach chapter. I honestly have no fucking idea why I decided to do huge timeskips in the next chapters, but the next chapter is near the end of summer break and it'll be the firework episode as it was shown with Hachiman and Yui. As always, this chapter could be bad, but I tried my best to make this chapter good, and for it to not be as cringy as possible, so it all comes down to whether you enjoyed this chapter or not.

Anyway, have fun reading. If you have feedback, feel free to comment it.

It was another hot summer day, Y/N once again lazing about his home. This time, he was lying down on his back on the couch, staring aimlessly at the ceiling. Y/N often wondered why Japan always had hot summers. During his time in America, some summer days were pretty hot and humid, but never to the extent of what he was feeling here.

However, he wasn't the only one like this as well. His sister, Akari, was lazing about on the cushioned chair they had. The mother of the two trudged down the stairs, looking to her children with a deadpan look.

"What are you two doing?", Riko questioned, "Why haven't you two gotten ready?"

"Huh...? Ready for what...?" Y/N was confused.

Riko raises her eyebrows, "Did I not tell you two yesterday that we'd be going to the beach?"

And after hearing this, Akari's previous mood brightens up. Her eyes now had stars in them as her mouth widens into a smile. She instantly shot up from her seat, rushing past her mother while Riko giggles.

Y/N only rubs his eyes in exhaustion and sighs.

"How the hell does she change moods so quickly?"

"Young man, what did I say about swearing in my house?"

"Yeah, yeah."

"Don't 'yeah, yeah' me. Now get your butt up there and go get ready."

With a roll of his eyes, Y/N heads up the stairs as well. Riko sighs, but her mouth had softened up to a smile. If anything, Y/N did act like his father as he himself would act like that sometimes. But, Y/N did have his shy factors, as does his father.

Riko remembers when Y/N's father first asked her out on a date. The blonde man had a huge blush on his face and he stuttered a little with the words he spoke to her. Riko fondly smiles at the memory and went to the table that held the pictures they've taken as families, picking up the family portrait. Putting the portrait down, she heads into the garage and gets the car started, opening the back of the trunk to put their luggage in.

Akari was the first to come out, excitement written all over her face. Tossing her bags in, she was met with Y/N's bag to her face, the tall blonde teen having threw his bag into his sister's face. Loading it all up into the car, Riko sat in the driver's seat with Y/N sitting at the front passenger seat. With Akari sitting in the middle passenger seat, the mother of the two backs up and begins heading for the beach.

The car ride was fairly silent, Riko occasionally humming to herself, Akari taking a nap, and Y/N scrolling through his phone. As soon as they found their parking spot, Y/N opening his passenger door, he looks up and let out a surprised sound. Coming out from her own passenger door was Saki Kawasaki, her heading to the beach with her family. The blue-haired girl blushed, realizing what she was wearing. Sure, she was wearing a jacket to cover the bathing suit she had on, but she left the zipper open.

Saki had only one thought running through her mind. "Why the hell do we keep meeting like this?" She didn't want to believe this was all "fate," believing that kind of thing is bullshit. But here she is now, and here Y/N is, sitting in his passenger seat with a slightly surprised look on his face. Before she couldn't utter anything out of her mouth, Akari had poked her head out from where Y/N was.

"Oh! Hi, Kawasaki-chan!," Akari says, beaming with a smile.

Riko then pokes her head above the car, "So this is 'Saki Kawasaki', huh? You're right, Akari. She's cute."

Y/N blushes heavily. "Mom!"

"What? I'm just being honest," Riko replies honestly.

The rest of Saki's family look to her, the girl quickly covering her face as a blush on her face. Some time later, Y/N could be seen walking with the bags him and his family had brought. Saki stood next to him, walking alongside him with a ticked off face.

Riko and Saki's parents were currently in front of them, talking amongst each other. Akari and Taishi were talking with each other as well, the younger Kawasaki siblings walking alongside the two.

"How the hell did it come to this?", Saki mutters with a sigh.

"You seem to be having a fun time."

Saki looks at Y/N with an annoyed look. "You think I'M having a fun time? Why are you and your sister here, anyway?"

"Uh, going to the beach? As every normal person does in the summer," Y/N replying with a smug grin.

"Ugh. Whatever."

The blue-haired girl picks up the pace, leaving Y/N slightly confused. Although, he suspected that she wished to spend time with her family and not run in to anyone she knows.

'Why the hell is he even here? Every since mom and dad found out about him being my co-worker, they've been nonstop asking me if I'm dating him. We literally met months ago and haven't even gotten to know each other! The only thing he's done for me is just take me out on apology meal...but...he is kinda cute...no, don't even think about that! No one else can know about this!", Saki thought.

Riko then slides next to Saki.

"So, Kawasaki-chan, is it?"

"Y-Yes, Miss Sh-Shiozaki?", Saki nervously replies.

"Please, call me Riko. All I want to know is, what do you see in my son? Hmm?"

"I-I...well...um...he's...nice...I think...?"

"I will agree with you there. Despite him looking like a scary, tall blonde, Y/N is quite a softy on the inside. And he's a hard worker like yourself from what I've heard from your parents."

"I-I see."

"But...if you do anything to break his heart like the last one, I'll--"

"Mom, can you not?"

"What? I'm just looking out for you."

"Mm-hm. Sure you are," Y/N says, rolling his eyes as he was unamused.

The blue-haired girl stopped walking, only to look at the blonde Shiozaki, then back to Riko. She wondered what she meant by, the "last one." Sure, she could infer it was maybe one of Y/N's ex's, but now she was quite curious as to what happened. Y/N notices that Saki was staring at him intently.

"What?"

"H-Huh? Oh...it's, uh...it's nothing."

"Okay then?"

Now taking a good look at Y/N, he had plain blue swim shorts with a white hoodie on. And like her, he left the zipper open, it showing his slightly muscular, but fit build. She blushed a little, but she didn't want it to be awkward, so she decided to strike up some conversation. If they were going to be co-workers for the next few months or more, she might as well get to know him.

"So..."

"Hmm?"

"For a high schooler, you're quite fit," Saki says, a bit impressed.

"Really? I guess. Everyone on the track team in America back in my old high school had a similar build to mine."

Saki hums as an answer, eyeing Y/N up and down. She then made the comparison to her cousin and Y/N. Yuzuru was fit, considering he was athletic enough to do sports, but doesn't really do them as he sees them as a "waste of time."

The only thing similar between Yuzuru and Y/N was the fact that they were both fit. The only difference between the two was that Y/N had a slightly muscular build to his. Y/N could see Saki was once again staring intently, him smirking a little as he decided to tease her.

"What? See something you like?~"

"H-Huh!? D-Don't be an idiot!"

"I don't know. The way your nose was bleeding and the way you kept staring really begs to differ."

"What!? ...My nose isn't bleeding, jackass!"

"Ah, c'mon, don't be mad. I'm just teasing.~"

Saki groans in annoyance. "I hate you."

"But do you really?"

"Sh-Shut up already!"

As the two older siblings kept arguing, Akari and Taishi were watching them. While Taishi was a bit concerned, Akari only watched with a smile on her face.

"Uh, should we stop them?" Taishi asks, raising a finger up.

Akari tilts her head, "Hmm? Why? Why should we?"

"Um, won't this thing get out of hand soon?"

"Nah, they'll be fine."

"O-Okay, then...", Taishi looks back, slightly bit concerned.

After finding a spot, the adults of the family deciding to set theirs up right next to each other, Y/N began to set everything up. The adults had gone elsewhere, leaving the children to do their own thing. Saki was currently applying sunscreen to her younger siblings, Taishi the first one to be done and eye the ocean.

As Y/N began to set up the umbrella for cover against the sun, Akari grins, thinking she could get away from her brother. But it wasn't even one step forward, Y/N grabs her shoulder and eyes her with a menacing grin.

"What do you think you're doing?"

"Oh, you know, Nii-chan, just going to admire and test the water out...?", Akari nervously replies with a nervous smile.

"Not without sunscreen," Y/N replies with a straight face.

"Never! You know how cold they are when you apply them!"

"Then would you rather have sunburn, you idiot?"

"Yes, yes I would rather have that, thank you very much!"

Y/N sighs in annoyance, "The fact that you're this dumb. Come here."

"Never!"

The two Shiozaki siblings were now in struggle, Akari flailing her arms underneath Y/N as the blonde teen restrains his sister's legs with one hand. In his other hand was a bottle of spray-on sunscreen. He now begins applying it, Akari shrieking and complaining as to how cold it was when the spray hits her skin.

Taishi and his younger siblings had run off towards the water already, leaving Saki with the two. She had a deadpan expression as she stared at the two, wondering if this is their usual shenanigans. Now breathing with a pant, Y/N gets off, resting his hands on his hip.

"There...now you can...now you can run off into the ocean, you little rascal."

Akari hisses, then sticking her tongue out in a playful manner before she runs off towards the ocean. Y/N sighs once again and sits down on the towel that was set up.

"Why does she have to act like a little kid sometimes?", Y/N mutters with slight annoyance.

"...You're not going to swim yet? Isn't that what the beach is for?"

"Same could be said for you, Kawasaki-san."

"'Kawasaki-san'?", Saki repeats with raised eyebrows.

"I figured it's a bit rude to go with your first name, considering it's more proper here to call people by their last name rather than their first," Y/N firmly states.

Saki sighs. "I suppose so."

The blueish-haired girl then sits down on her own towel, hugging her legs into her chest as to while Y/N leaned back, his arms behind him. Sweat pooled down both their faces, Y/N running his hand across his forehead to wipe some of his sweat off.

"...It's too damn hot out here..."

"Yeah...it is...", Saki agrees.

Y/N then stands up and stretches, "Need something? There's should be a local snack stand down there or something."

"Just a water. Something to cool off from this heat."

"Water, gotcha. Be right back, then."

With that, Y/N departs down the beach, walking for about ten minutes before he came across the local snack stand he had heard about. It wasn't packed, but it wasn't empty neither. Had a good amount of people that was easily able to maneuver around to get to the places.

Getting in line, patiently waiting, he reaches the front. Ordering a few water bottles for when his sister and the other Kawasaki finish to come back, he begins to make his way back. As he did come back, the spot they set up coming into view, he lets out an annoyed grunt. Not only did he see the two same jackasses harassing Akari some days back, but there was also a third person, him being a bit bigger than the other two and about an inch shorter than Y/N. However, his build for a person was quite fit, but not to the extent of Y/N's. As he got closer, he could hear the conversastion.

"Aw, come on, babe. Let me show you a real good time.~"

Saki sighs and grunts in annoyance. "I told you, I'm not interested."

"Come on, it's not like your seeing anybody. It'll only be thirty minutes of fun."

The other two stooges snicker before they felt the familiar touch they felt that day. Freezing in fear, they turned their heads around, seeing Y/N's plain straight face. It didn't take long for them to shake Y/N's hands off their shoulders, high-tailing it out of there. The third jackass turns around and sees Y/N, laughing.

"So this little pimp your boyfriend? Talk about a joke."

"Says the guy who needs twiddle dick and twiddle dee to back himself up. That goes to show to how small your dick is."

"Wanna say that again, punk!?"

"Hey, at least I've dated girls before, unlike you, who is a sad sack of shit that needs help preying on girls."

"You little--"

The jackass goes to punch Y/N's face, Y/N letting out a sigh as he pushes the oncoming arm out of the way. The other teen was confused as to how Y/N did it so easily, him raising his leg for a kick. But Y/N simply grabs it, pushing the jackass backwards as he lost balance. He quickly gets charging at Y/N, but Y/N side-steps before he does a roundhouse kick into the person's side.

The person falls onto the sand in slight pain, grunting as he goes to stand up. But Y/N wraps his arms around his neck and puts him in a headlock, the other person tapping his arm to let him go.

"How the hell--!?"

"My dad's military. Taught me a few things. So what're going to do now, 'tough guy'?", Y/N taunted.

"Y/N...let him go," Saki pleads.

"You sure?"

Saki takes a deep breath, "Just...let him go. I think you've humiliated him enough."

"Well, I'm sure he can take a bit more, but if that's what the pretty lady wants."

"P-Pretty lady?", Saki questions with a blush.

However, Y/N ignores Saki's response for a moment, briefly sending a wink her way. Looking back down to the jackass, who was struggling and kept furiously tapping Y/N's arm to let him go, Y/N finally does so. Falling to the ground, gasping for air, he looks up at Y/N, the Shiozaki boy only leaning down and giving him a stern look.

"High-tail your ass out of here. Before I go kick your ass some more. It is very kickable."

Further proving his statement, Y/N kicks the stranger's ass, the teen yelping as he runs off in the direction of the other two stooges. The blonde Shiozaki rubbed and pinched his noise in annoyance, heading back to where he put the water bottles. Picking them back up, he heads back to their spot and sits down, putting the other water bottles at his side and offers one to Saki.

"Here."

"Th-Thanks," Saki says, nervously taking it as her hand shakes.

He nods in reply, Y/N opening one for himself. He takes a few drinks out of his, looking out to the ocean as he can see Akari and the Kawasaki siblings having fun. He let out a small smile, watching them interact.

Saki, however, still had the blush on her face from what Y/N said. "Pretty lady." Sure, she was called pretty by her family and her cousins, but it's what they would tell each other as they have a good bond with each other. Well, except their uncle. From what Yuzuru and Saki could summarize, their uncle, Yuzuru's father, is complete asshole and dick.

Nervously, she looks to Y/N, who wasn't paying attention to her as he took small sips from his bottle from time to time, staring off into the ocean. Her cheeks warmed up even more. She really questioned to herself.

'Does Y/N think I'm pretty?'

"...You okay? You've been staring at me a lot lately."

"I-It's nothing."

"Right," Y/N says, clearly unsure of the answer. Although, he shrugs and looks back to the ocean.

"H-Hey..."

"Yeah?"

"Th-Thanks for...you know..."

"...It was no problem. Just doing what any good person would do," Y/N bluntly replies.

"D-Did you mean what you said? About calling me pretty?", Saki shyly asks.

Y/N lets out a soft chuckle, "Well, I'm not one to lie about when it comes to complimenting a girl. You ARE pretty. Cute, even."

"Th-Thank you. You're quite the smooth talker."

"That's what my ex-girlfriends would tell me." Y/N says with a shrug.

"You've dated more than one girl?," Saki asks raised eyebrows.

"Not at the same time, at least. Most of them didn't work out and some of them decided that we just be friends. But if anything...I regret dating the last one."

"...What happened with the last one?"

Y/N shook his head with a smile. "Nah, it's okay. Don't worry about it."

The blueish-haired girl only narrows her eyes at him, before she giggled. This catches Y/N's attention.

"What's up?"

"Nothing. Here, hand me your phone."

"Okay?"

Doing as he was instructed, Y/N hands his phone to Saki. She seemed to fiddle around with it, pressing some buttons here and there before she handed it back.

"I'll call you sometime. As thanks for taking care of that guy."

"No, no. It's fine, really. I just--"

"Let me make it up to you. Just think of it as repayment for the last time you took me out that one time."

Y/N sighs with a smile, "If that's what you wish, Kawasaki-san."
