3| Summer Break, Sibling Bonding
Months have passed and it was now the month of August. Things were a bit different from America. For one, summer break didn't start in June, which is typically the end of the school year in American schools. Instead, summer break started in the month of August.
Since they were out of school, and it wasn't the end of the school year, which was about nearly in April, Y/N was lazing about in his home. He was sitting on a nice cushioned chair with his sister laying down on the couch, reading a light novel. Akari had recently gotten invested in a book series called Metronome in Love, and by the look on her face, which was a smile, she was clearly invested in it.
The ceiling fan in the room was put to the highest setting, Y/N still panting heavily due to the summer heat. He sighed out of exhaustion, due to the summer heat.
Akari looks to her brother with a questioned look, "What wrong, big bro?"
Y/N sighing once more, "Nothing really...it's just so fucking hot out..."
"...You've got that right."
Silence envelops the two Shiozaki siblings, Akari going back to her book. The only sounds in the living room was the spinning fans of the ceiling fans and the turning of the pages of Akari's light novel.
"...Nee, Onii-san."
"Hmm? What?"
"How about we got to the park? There's tons here in Chiba, right?"
"Well, yeah, but I really don't want to go out right now.?"
"C'mon! Think of it as some sibling bonding time!"
Y/N thinks about it for a moment. "Okay. Got get your stuff together, then."
Akari cheers, "Yes!"
"Just go change into something that is more...suitable for outside."
"What? Is there a problem with what I'm wearing?"
"Uh, yeah. There is."
Akari raises her eyebrows. "What's the problem with what I'm wearing then?"
"Hmm, let's see. First of all, your belly button is exposed, your shorts are too short, and you're aren't wearing bra underneath. I can tell."
"Pssshhh! It'll be fine!"
"We're not leaving the house unless you change into something more suitable. I'm fine with you wearing this stuff at home considering it's just us here and it's our own home. But if it's outside, wear something that is actually suitable."
"Ugh, you sound like dad."
"Can it, young lady."
"Whatever, 'mom'!"
The younger Shiozaki had got up from her spot on the couch and ascends up the stairs. Y/N sighs to himself and gets up, stretching as he does so.
Y/N thinks to himself, wondering how he deals with the carefree personality his sister has. Then again, considering his work style, him always working his ass off for the sake of his family and his sister's education for the future, he didn't have the luxury to relax like her. Either way, he still loves his sister, not to the extent of being called a siscon. If anything, he finds it strange. Or, "fucking weird" in his terms.
Y/N was tying his shoes at the bottom of the stairs, him having black gym shorts on and a blue sports shirt on. As he was tying the last shoe, he feels a slight jolt of pain in the back of his head. He turns his head around, slightly annoyed as he rubs the spot of where felt the pain. Behind him, his younger sister had kicked his head, a triumphant playful grin on her face.
He sighs and got up, staring at what his sister was wearing. She wore a green tank top with her own black running shorts. Beside her were her shoes, which she was getting on. Now ready to leave, Y/N opened the front door to their home and Akari was the first to bolt out. The girl ran in circles in front of their house as Y/N calmly locks the front door, turning to his sister with a deadpan look.
"What the hell are you doing? What are you, a little kid?"
"Technically, yes! I'm just enjoying my youth!"
Y/N sighs, "Mm-hm. You seem to be having fun. Alright, let's go."
"Yes! Oooh! We should get some ice cream to help beat the summer heat!", Akari says with stars in her eyes.
"We'll see if there's a shop along the way. I really don't want to head down to the store just to buy a box."
"Fine, fine. Let's just go already! I'm already craving some ice cream!"
"Yeah, yeah. We're going already, you sweet demon."
"Who're you calling a sweet demon!?"
"I wonder why, idiot. I still didn't forget about you snacking away at my Halloween candy supply a few years back."
"I said I was sorry, didn't I!? And that was a few years ago!"
"Just because I forgave you about it, doesn't mean I won't forget it."
"But I said sorry!"
"...Are you going to keep rolling around on the ground there, or are we going down to the park?"
The younger Shiozaki only pouts and gets up, hurrying down the sidewalk. Y/N raises an eyebrow and puts a hand on his hip.
"You know the park is the other way, right?"
Akari turns around and hurries down the other way, "Y-Yeah! I-I knew that!"
'...Why is my sister such a dimwitt sometimes?', Y/N thought to himself.
Shaking his head with a small smile, Y/N follows his sister down the road to go on with their plan for the day.
Heading down towards the park, with heat flaring above them from the sun, they did indeed see a ice cream cart. Akari sat down at a nearby chair to recollect herself, clearly tired from the walk from their home.
She knew it was going to be a hot day, but she didn't realize how hot today was. As the girl sweats profusely, Y/N walked up to the cart and asked for two ice cream cones. For himself, vanilla. Plain and simple. The other was mint chocolate chip for his sister.
As he goes to purchase the refreshing snacks, he turns around, seeing an unpleasing scene in front of him.
"Look, man. Can you piss off? I'm kinda busy."
"Aww, c'mon babe.~ We'll show you a fun time.~", some jackass said.
"Besides, you're a rare beauty here...let me guess. Half foreigner?~"
Y/N could see his younger sister was visibly uncomfortable. The salesman was about to hand Y/N his order until Y/N put his hand up. He simply said, "hold on to it for me for a second."
The salesman was confused as he watches Y/N walk back to his sister, pulling one of his sleeves up. As the two idiots continue to harass Akari, one of them shivers when the feel a tight grip on their shoulder.
"What the hell, man? Can you---"
"...What do you two think you're doing?"
The two freeze at Y/N's voice, turning their heads around slowly. The two idiots were around 5'6" or 5'7". So, as soon as they turned their heads around, all they could see was a tall blonde with menacing blue eyes.
"So? What do you two think you're doing with my little sister?"
"Sh-She's y-your little s-sister?"
"She is...you got a problem with that?"
And just like that, the two quickly take off, screaming like little girls. Y/N sighs and looks to his younger sister.
"You okay?"
"Y-Yeah...but did you have to scare them that much?"
Y/N only smiled and pats his sister's head. He turns back to the cart and goes back to talking to the salesman. Akari looks at her brother with a slight frown.
Over the years, he had always been overprotective of her. She could take care of herself, but Y/N would always make sure that she and their family were top priority. In fact, when Y/N was on a trip with a few of their friends back when they were in America, Akari had called him during said trip.
She herself had a boyfriend and he pretty much ended up on cheating on her. The girl was in tears and when she told her brother, he simply asked, "what was his name?" Akari was confused as to why he had asked the sudden question, but she thought nothing of it and simply told him. Y/N would later come home the day he returned with his friends, coming home with a bruise on his cheek. Akari asked him what happened and he simply said, "just took care of something."
The next day she had went to school, she had saw her ex-boyfriend with many bruises on his face and his arms. She put it all together and came to the conclusion that her older brother had beat up her ex-boyfriend. The reason, most likely for Akari's heart.
When Y/N came back from the ice cream salesman and goes to offer the ice cream to his younger sister, Akari buries her face in Y/N's shirt.
"What's wrong with you?"
Akari doesn't respond and she continues to hug her older brother, Y/N hearing light sniffling coming from her. He only let out a light chuckle.
"You know, the more you continue to cry into my shirt, the more this ice cream will melt and fall on your head and my hand, right?"
And just like that, Akari stops crying and takes the ice cream from Y/N's hand, her enjoying the delicacy. Y/N only smiles even more at how his sister can turn her own frown into a smile very easily.
He himself couldn't do that. He remembered his last girlfriend. What she did. He then felt something poking his cheek, turning his eyes to see his sister with a look of concern.
"You were thinking about 'her'...weren't you...?"
Y/N sighs. "Yeah...I was."
"Well, hey. It didn't matter what she said. You're the best person I could ever have aside from mom and dad. Don't let her words sway from what you think."
Y/N chuckles and pats his sister's head, "Yeah, you're right."
"Now c'mon and finish that up! The sun hasn't gone down yet!"
"Alright, alright. Calm your horses."
And so Akari drags her brother around in order to get his spirits up, to take his mind off his previous girlfriend. She first dragged him to a swimsuit shop, asking for his opinions. But if anything, it just ended with a flick to her forehead.
They then went down to the supermarket, having not bought any swimsuits as they were browsing. Y/N pushed the cart around as he looked throughout the aisles, checking each and every can, going through different produces and meats for dishes later on in the week to make. In the end, they bought more than they should've had.
"And why did you feel the need to buy more than one cookie box?", Y/N asked.
"Don't judge me! Cookies are delicious!"
"I'm not judging you. I'm just asking why you bought more than one cookie box. I'm not rich, you know that, right? And if you're going to buy your own food, find yourself a job."
"I can't since I'm doing basketball right now!"
Y/N only shook his head and flicks her forehead, to which Akari pouts. Upon entering their house, they see their mother coming down the stairs. Her name is Riko, the mother of the two looking at her children with slightly confused looks.
(A/N): Appearance wise, Riko Hakozaki from Bloom Into You. Again, I just like the character designs of that anime/manga.
"Where were you two? It's already getting dark," Riko says, slightly concerned for her two children.
"Oh, you know, having some sibling bonding time, heading down to the park, then did some grocery shopping, the normal thing," Akari says, beaming with a smile.
Riko frowns, "Didn't I tell you two I'd do that tomorrow?"
"Sorry, mom. Can't let you do all the work sometimes. Besides, we know how hard you work all day," Y/N says as he sets the grocery down on the table.
Riko sighs in defeat and begins to help her son with putting the grocery in the right place. "So? Have you two been adjusting well here?"
"Well, it's not a terrible place. It's just...different to what I'm used to," Y/N replies honestly.
"Oh! Nii-san found another girl he likes!"
Y/N sighs for the fifth time, "It's not like that."
"Ara? Then what is it then, Y/N Shiozaki," Riko states as she puts her hands on her hips.
"She's just a co-worker. Nothing more."
"From what it sounds to me, you didn't deny it. So, my son of mine, who is this girl you're interested in?"
"...Kawasaki. Her name's Saki Kawasaki."
"Kawasaki? Akari, didn't you say you're friends with someone named Taichi Kawasaki?"
"Hmm? Oh! That's Saki-chan's younger brother!"
"I see, I see." Riko turns to her oldest. "If you're interested in pursuing her, just make sure she's not like the last one. That skank, using my son for such--"
"Mom...it's fine. She's not here to bother you. You don't have to worry about it."
Riko sighs, "I'm just making sure that this new girl you're interested in won't break your heart like her. I'm just watching over you, just as a mother should."
"Yeah...I know. I'm hitting the sack. Night."
The two watch as Y/N heads upstairs to his room. Before moving here, as Y/N had dated many girls before coming here, there was one that stood out from the rest.
Her name was Chelsea, the girl having auburn hair herself. From what Y/N's family saw, it seemed that Chelsea and Y/N looked to be really in love. But all that, it was just an act and a lie. As Y/N lied down in his bed, he wasn't sure what he saw in Chelsea. In fact, he wasn't sure why Chelsea chose him of all people to do that to him. He just hoped he wouldn't have to see her.
