Chapter 2: His Awakening

"It's impossible." I cried.

I laid my head on my desk, giving up on my worksheets. I don't get why he makes me do this everyday! It's absurd! It's totally unfair.

Some things are impossible. This is one of them.

There was an urgent knock at my door. I lifted my head from the table and stared at it, perplexed. "Yes?" I called.

It swung open and in came a flustered Yukio. "Nee-San! Nii-San got a job!" My eyes went wide and I stood. "Eh?! Nii-Chan did?! Huh? EH?! He's not cooking tonight's dinner?!" I complained with a frown.

It's not that nobody else knows how to cook or anything, it's just that Rin is the best.

Yukio sweat dropped. "Nee-San . . . huh? You're not done with the worksheets yet?" I fell to the ground and twitched a bit.

I quickly sat up and pouted up at him. "It's impossible! It's every single day! My brain is broken!" I cried out, making him laugh nervously.

Dad's head popped from the doorway. "Hurry up and finish. We're celebrating your brothers tonight with sukiyaki."

My eyes lit up and I stood fast with newfound determination. "Sukiyaki?! Alright!"

I sat at my desk and worked vigorously on the worksheet. Rin got a job, Yukio is going to a prestigious school tomorrow, both of them are great.

An hour later and I finished my worksheets. I wonder if Rin is back yet? It's already nightfall.

I headed to the dining area to see everyone was getting ready to sit. "Oh! Great timing." I grinned at them, taking my seat across Yukio and next to dad.

An empty chair is next to Yukio, where Rin usually sits.

Everyone smiled at me. "Yeah. Once Rin gets here we'll start." Dad said, patting my head fondly as we all settled in our seats.

So we waited.

And waited.

And waited.

And waited.

"Rin's late, don't you think?" One of the guys asked.

He is. We've been sitting here for god knows how long.

I thought Rin would be here by now.

Yukio and I exchanged glances and nodded, standing simultaneously. "We'll go see if we can find him." Yukio spoke for us as I headed out.

Some of the other guys came along so we could cover more ground. But we already have an idea where he might be.

Rin would never miss sukiyaki unless something happened to bum him out. And whenever he's upset, he always goes to this park we played at when we were kids.

Yukio knew this too. We headed in the same direction, knowing something had happened.

When we arrived it was no surprise to see him sitting on the swing dejectedly.

Ah-ah. What a sad face.

"I thought I'd find you here. The sukiyaki will be all gone." Yukio spoke as we walked over to him.

I walked over in front of Rin and crouched down. "Nii-Chan?" I asked, genuinely concerned. He refused to meet mine or Yukio's eyes, careful to keep them hidden with his bangs.

"I couldn't face anyone there if I went home." He spoke, voice hoarse and laced with sadness.

Eh? "What are you talking about?" Yukio questioned him. Rin merely closed his eyes. "She fired me."

What? No way. But why? "Said they couldn't have a violent thug like me in her store."

I stood from my crouched position, very confused. "What happened?" I asked.

Rin wouldn't attack anyone. Not unless they were attacking him or someone else.

Rin's grip on the swing tightened and he shook his head. "I don't even know myself." Just what on earth happened?

"Don't give me that! Everyone was so happy that you'd found a job Nii-San. So how could you-how could you drop the ball like that?" Yukio demanded.

My eyes widened slightly. "Hey, Yukio-" He shot me a scolding look.

"No. You need to explain it so that it makes sense to everyone." He continued to push.

Rin looked over at our younger brother. "Listen, there are things you can't understand even if you do explain them!" He shouted.

"Nii-San . . ."

"Nii-Chan . . ."

The way he had said it, it was kind of like, could it be? "My bad." Rin cast his gaze back downwards.

"C'mon. We should head home. Dad's waiting." I tried. Yukio nodded in agreement, backing me up.

After a moment of silence, Rin stood.

We headed home, but he still seemed pretty down. I guess today just isn't his day.

We soon made it home in no time. On the porch is dad and another man.

A guest at this hour?

Dad noticed us and smiled. "Ah, you're home!" The other man turned as well and his gaze settled on Rin. "Okumura Rin?" He asked him.

Uh-oh. A man Rin beat up? A detective? A father of a hoodlum? "I'm her- Yui's father."

He stepped aside to reveal a little girl clutching at his leg. "I don't know how to thank you for what you've done for her."

Recognition flashed through Rin's eyes and we stopped in front of them. "Oh. Is she okay?" He asked him.

The father nodded. "Thanks to you, she only suffered a slight scrape." Rin's once gloomy face held a relieved smile.

He looked down at her kindly. "Well that's a relief." She smiled in return and nodded as well.

Rin always had a way with kids. Such a kind hearted older brother.

"Yui's always been a scatterbrained child." As soon as he spoke those words her face fell, as did Rin's.

"Falling down the stairs, tripping . . . she's never without fresh wounds." Doesn't that mean something else though?

Rin looked back up at the father. "You're wrong about that. It's not that the kid's scatterbrained. She's being tormented. They're pulling her hair, snatching things away from her."

I knew it! She's being bullied!

Dad and the girls father seemed surprised. "Can you describe the person who did this?" The father asked urgently. Of course he would. Someone is bullying his daughter.

"I don't know. It was someone I'd never seen before. Short and with a face like a monkey." Huh?

Face like a monkey?

The dad, still holding his daughters arm, started dragging her away, anger on his face.

"Where are you going?" Dad called out to him. "To the school. I need to contact the PTA and ferret out whoever it is who's bullying my daughter."

It's a good course of action. But it's kind of late for that isn't it?

The girl stopped, grabbing his arm. "You don't understand. I'm not being bullied by humans. It's the evil fairies. They come to my room at night and make all sorts of mischief. These days they even do it outside the house." She told him.

Evil fairies? Face of a monkey . . . ah! Those little ones huh? Eh?

I glanced at Rin, startled by the news.

He can see them? But how? He's never been able to before. At least not to my knowledge.

I turned back to the girl. I see. Those guys can be pretty mischievous. They're annoying as hell.

"Yui is a child with a vivid imagination you see. I've already heard such fairy tales from her countless times. Lately, it seems as if she can't distinguish her daydreams from real life." The dad explained, looking down at his daughter.

Well, it's not like I can tell him. It's an expected response from someone, especially an adult.

They would never believe because they can't see. "But they're not daydreams." Rin persisted, going to her aide. "Rin." Dad tried, but Rin didn't even hear him.

"Why don't you believe her? Whos' a kid supposed to rely on if her own parents won't believe her? Can't you be serious-"

He was cut off as dad struck his head. He walked on past Rin, who shouted at him.

He walked over to the girl and crouched down in front of her. Digging into his pocket, he pulled out a small vial with something in it.

He smiled at her, it's gentle as always. "Here, this is a four-leaf clover charm. Just holding onto it will protect you from evil."

Yui stared at it a bit before gingerly taking it. "Thank you." She's so quiet. Really cute.

Dad looked up at her father. "I urge you not to reproach your daughter. There is no one else in the world she relies on as much as you, her own parents."

The man looked back at his daughter, looking at her carefully. "Let's go home Yui."

He didn't seem mad. Not in the least. I can't quite tell what exactly.

The two then left, leaving us to watch. That charm is probably very much legit, since dad can see them too.

At least that's what Aira says. But even though she said that, I never told him myself. Afraid that he'd react like Yui's dad.

It's frustrating, having something to say but not being able to say it.

"What the hell. You think that was enough to convince him?" Rin asked, rubbing the spot dad had hit him.

"It's far too soon for you of all people to start lecturing others. Anyway, Rin, you're grounded for the foreseeable future."

Huh? Huh?! Rin looked at him in confusion. "Huh? But why?" He asked, completely befuzzled by dads words.

Dad walked back over to him. "Your ex-boss from that part-time job just stopped by and left this!" He held out a piece of paper to Rin's face.

Hm? I tilted my head to get a better view and winced at the numbers on it. "A bill for all the damage you caused to her store and goods!"

Please tell me she missed a decimal point somewhere. "You've got to be kidding me!" Rin's eyes went impossibly wide and his jaw dropped.

"Rin, no sukiyaki for you!" Dad declared.

Oh my. "What the? Hey no fair!" Rins' shout echoed through the night sky.

~

Man, Yukio didn't even say bye this morning. He just left me a note under my door. Can you believe that? Didn't even have time for his older sister!

I'm so gonna beat that four eyes. Huh?

Sensing her, I turned. There stood Aira in her human form.

Aira, in her human form, is a tall and slender woman with dark maroon colored hair that reaches just below her shoulders and round pinkish purple eyes with flecks of red in them.

She wore a long sleeved, pale yellow shirt and black pants. I smiled lightly, but I'm surprised.

She usually meets me in specific locations. I was only out for a walk, I was going to meet with her tonight at one of our designated meeting places.

"Hey Aira." I greeted.

She had a serious look on her face, even more so than usual. "What is it?" I asked, a tad worried.

Did something happen? "It seems Rin has obtained the sight. And one of the kings is paying him a visit as we speak. The one of rot." She informed me.

My eyes went wide. What? The Kings? Does she mean- "Where?!" I asked urgently.

She pursed her lips, not wanting to say. "Aira." My voice held a different tone underneath. Stronger, more commanding.

She sighed. "This way." She turned and took off in a graceful sprint. I quickly followed after, fear beginning to override me.

Why is a King here? Why is he with Rin? Why can Rin see now? Is it because of yesterday?

Tch. I gotta hurry. I have to hurry!

As we ran, a sudden energy flared nearby, causing Aira to falter and fall to her knees.

Goosebumps formed across my skin and I shivered as a familiar power revealed itself.

I looked towards the direction it came from; an area where delinquents like to fight.

That power, it can only be him. "Nii-Chan. Aira, I'll go on ahead." I took off.

"Wait! Fuyuko-Sama!" She shouted after me. I ignored her and pushed myself to run faster and pumped my arms at my side.

A few guys ran out from around a corner where I sense that strong presence.

Fear oozed off them as they ran past me, slightly screaming.

Rin!

I rounded the corner to see Rin sitting on the ground, covered in blue flames.

A guy is kneeled in front of him, hand outstretched.

It's that rich snob. But his appearance . . . he's possessed. That's one of the Kings. Aira said he's the one of rot. Then he is . . .

The two glanced over at me. I narrowed my eyes on the man and ran towards him. "Get away from my brother, Astaroth!" I roared.

Once I was in front of him I brought my leg up to kick him, but he jumped away in the nick of time.

I stood in front of Rin, glaring at him.

I knew by the look in the demons eyes that my own have changed, showing a brilliant blue fire inside.

"Go!" I shouted, my voice having the undertone of my command.

A wicked smile stretched across his face. "Evil's are in their heart." Huh?

I suppress my power and turned in the direction of the familiar voice, along with Rin.

Dad.

"O Lord, give them according to their works, and according to the wickedness of their inventions."

Dad began to walk towards us, no, the possessed boy. "According to the works of their hands give thou to them: render to them their reward. Thou shalt destroy them, and shalt not build them up."

He's speaking verses. "Curses. Are you an exorcist?!" Astaroth demanded in anger.

Dad just grinned, but it wasn't one I have seen before. "Blessed be the Lord." Is all he said.

Aira had told me he was, but I have never seen an Exorcist exorcise demons.

"I'll rip that mouth of yours apart, so you can never again utter such spells!" Astaroth charged towards dad, who is still spilling out verses.

Astaroth struck out, but dad turned and avoided his strike, still reciting.

He grabbed the demons outstretched arm and twisted, making him turn and tumble to the ground painfully.

Dad placed his index and middle fingers together and moved them to the side before pointing at him, finishing the verse.

The possessed guy let out out a scream as darkness quickly rushed out of him.

As soon as it did, his appearance turned back to normal and he passed out.

So that's an exorcism. I've never seen one before. It was kind of . . . I don't even know.

"Are you alright?" Dad asked. Huh. Rin! I turned to my brother to see the blue flames disappear. But it is definitely still residing in him, it has to be. At least, somewhere. I don't sense it anymore.

"Wait, nevermind me. Is that guy gonna be alright?" He asked, pointing at the unconscious bully.

"I exorcised the demon who had possessed him. I'm sure he'll come to in a moment." Dad explained.

Rin's face has confusion and shock written all across it. "Demon?" He asked, still not quite understanding.

"You can see them now too, can't you?" Dad asked, blowing one of the tiny charcoal demons away.

One had landed on Rin's shoulder and he brushed it away quickly. "Those aren't anything to be afraid of Nii-Chan." I told him, forcing a small smile.

Dad nodded. "It's a Coal Tar, which possesses fungi. They're attracted to dark, dank places, as well as introverted humans."

Dad's gaze turned to me. "It seems you've been able to see for a while now, huh?"

I jumped and quickly averted my gaze elsewhere, not knowing what to say.

"This world is comprised of two dimensions joined as one, like a mirror. One is the material world we live in-Assiah. The other is the empty realm inhabited by the demons-Gehenna." Dad began to explain.

Of course I knew of this. Aira taught me.

"Normally there can be no contact between these two dimensions, nevermind travel. But having possessed all material substances in this world, the demons are now intruding. Now stand up. Thanks to this uproar, they have learned of your awakening. Doubtless, demons of all species will come after you for every kind of reason. Before that comes to pass, you must hide!"

I looked down a bit. I'm conflicted. Aira did tell me that Rin had inherited most of Satan's power.

Those blue flames I sensed, I saw, they were the strongest ones I have ever come across.

Rin holds the ultimate power of him. Yukio seemingly has inherited nothing as far as we know. And I have only inherited some. Not nearly as powerful as Rin

Should I tell them? "Hey, hold up! I don't know what you're talking about! Demons? And what the hell do you mean by awakening? What the hell am I anyway?!" Rin shouted at our father.

The man who knows the truth about us and this world we live in.

"Rin, you are not a human being." Dad told him, to which his eyes widened a bit. "You are the son of a demon borne by a human woman." Rin is taken aback by his words.

The shadows moved and some beings began to take form all around, also having sensed Rin's power.

Dad walked over and grabbed his arm and pulls him up.

"And not just any demon either. The demon of all demons. The offspring of Satan."

I have waited ten years for him to tell the truth. But when he did, a deep sadness built up within my chest.
