The Blue Angels
You have just completed your latest sortie on board the USS Gerald R. Ford. You are thinking about the tricks you pulled to get away from the enemies. You are also making sure the paperwork is finished. Hopefully you will be selected for the blue angels. Your thoughts are interrupted by your RIO.
"that was some fancy flying," Your RIO remarks as he sits down next to you.
"Believe me Jason It was nothing," you retort out of sheer modesty. Any navy or air force pilot can pull the maneuvers you did. It's still a nice compliment especially from one of your teammates.
"But still I think your going to be called for the Blue Angels," Jason remarks
"And how is the paperwork going?"
"First of all I'm not that good and second of all it was going well until you interrupted," you retort. You sign the last page. It's a good thing that you were doing it whilst Jason was complimenting you.
"I'm going to get a snack," you get up and head to the line for the food. Thirty seconds later you've made it back to your spot but you are interrupted again.
"Jamie come with me," It's the captain.
"Yes sir," you follow him to the briefing room. You arrive to find Commander Brian Kesselring of the US Navy Blue Angels. You are impressed but at the same time you are worried.
"You must be Lieutenant Jamie Markham," Commander Kesselring remarks
"Yes that is correct sir," you stammer. You sit down before your legs crumple with the weight of your excited dread. Hopefully it doesn't dhow.
"I hope you don't mind if I sit down," You feel a little odd asking when you have already sat down.
"That's all good now where was I," he has lost his train of thought.
"Yes that's it Jamie Captain Eliot was telling me that you are a good acrobatic flyer would that be correct?" He remembers what he was talking about before you came.
"Well if the Captain says so it must be true," you remark. It gets a chuckle from Commander Kesselring. You realise that he is asking so he can see if you're worthy of joining the Blue Angels.
"And she also works well in a team," Captain Eliot remarks. He is referring to a sortie you did a while back where you took command and led the team to victory. Again anyone can do that so you don't know why it is a big deal.
"Lieutenant Markham how would you feel if I assigned you to the Angels?"
"It would be an honour sir," you reply as sincerely as possible. You get up and adjust your uniform.
"It's settled them Jamie welcome to the Blue Angels," Commander Kesselring responds. He is happy that he found the last member of the team.
"And we leave tomorrow,"
"Thank you sir," you salute both officers as you leave. Ten minutes later you are relaxing in your bunk after doing the paperwork and talking to Commander Kesselring.
"Congrats," Jason remarks as he throws himself on the bunk next to you.
"What do you mean?" You are a little confused.
"You are a part of the blue angels," Jason explains
"Wait how did you find out?" you are not surprised that the scuttle but has travelled.
"Scuttle but spreads like flies," Jason clarifies. It is the day after the meeting and you are standing by the waiting Blue Angels F-18. You are excited to get under way with the blue angels but at the same time you don't want to leave your friends behind.
"Hey Jamie," Jason remarks. He is getting ready to marshal the F-18. You can tell he is a little jealous. It makes sense that he would be because you are joining an elite team.
"You're a little jealous aren't you?" you ask even though you know his answer.
"I'm pretty sure you'd be jealous if your friend is in the Blue Angels," He responds playfully. Commander Kesselring arrives which causes you to fall silent. You will miss the banter between you and Jason.
"Well up you go Lieutenant," He gestures to the ladder. You take his lead and climb up. You take your place in the passenger's seat. Five minutes later you are in the air. There is a bit of an awkward silence in the cockpit.
"What's your call sign?"Kesselring asks
"Raven," you respond. Three hours later you've made it to El Centro, California. Commander Kesselring has everyone assembled in the classroom.
"First of all I would like to welcome our newest crew member Lieutenant Jamie Markham call sign Raven," Kesselring starts his briefing.
"Second of all our first show is a month and a half away I was thinking we could use this time to run through the diamond drill amongst other things,"
"Boss will I be taking Jamie up in number seven," one of the other members asks.
"Yes Kelsey you will for the first week," you are not surprised because you need training. After all it's a new system.
"Everyone is to meet back here in an hour. Dismissed," Thirty seconds later you are approached by one of the men.
"You must be Jamie. My name is Kelsey call sign, 'Penguin',"
"Yes it's nice to meet you," you respond as you stand up.
"Let me introduce you to the rest of the team," Kelsey remarks. Another man approaches
"Hey Kelsey I was wondering if number two was going on the left or right, would you know by any chance?"
"No that's a question you'll have to ask Brian and Jamie, this is Daniel, call sign DJ," he answers Daniel's question and introduces you at the same time. The thought of flying with these men puts a smile on your face.
"Welcome," Daniel offers his hand for a handshake. You take him up on his offer.
"Thank you," Thirty minutes later you have introduced yourself to everyone and you are back in the briefing room. You are also ready for flight training. Commander Kesselring is looking over the flight plan.
"So boss what formation will we be doing?" Scott Maroni asks.
"The diamond sneak past followed by a sharp pull up. We will also be ending on a flyby,"Kesselring remarks. Your heart skips a beat because you've always wanted to do a legal flyby. A smile creeps up on your face.
"Kelsey as I said before you will be taking Jamie up in number seven,"
"Yes sir," Kelsey acknowledges the reminder with an unmatchable enthusiasm.
"After the sharp pull up we will do a diamond one formation with number seven at point. We will then break away and do individual tower flybys," Kesselring adds to the briefing further explaining his . Cheers roar across the room. You assume it's because the team often doesn't get permission to do those kinds of flybys.
"That's all. Let's head to the aircrafts," Those are the words you have been wanting to hear all day.
