Chapter 28
The night was heavy with an unsettling stillness as Jungkook paced back and forth in his dimly lit room. The moonlight filtering through the blinds painted his tense figure in silvery streaks. He ran a hand through his messy hair, his thoughts in chaos. Every time he closed his eyes, the image of Madhu flashed before him—the way her eyes had softened yet held unspoken questions when he had called her "Luna." The clock struck midnight, but sleep evaded him. He paced his room, running his hands through his dark hair as his heart thudded erratically. His chest felt heavy, as if the memories of the past were physically weighing him down. He couldn’t keep it bottled up any longer—he owed Madhu the truth.
He couldn’t keep it in anymore. He knew she deserved to know, especially after the way she had been quietly carrying her curiosity without pressing him. Taking a deep breath, he stepped out of his room, his heart racing with every step he took toward Madhu’s door. Her room was quiet, the faint glow of a bedside lamp spilling through the slight crack in the door. He hesitated for a moment, gathering the courage to face the storm of emotions he was about to unleash. Finally, he knocked softly.
"Come in," Madhu’s voice came, calm but laced with surprise at the late visit. Jungkook pushed the door open, his gaze meeting hers immediately. She was sitting on the edge of her bed, surprised and irritated at the same time by the such late visit. But her expression changed as she saw him there. "Jungkook?" she asked, tilting her head slightly. "What’s wrong? Is everything ok..?" Madhu went towards him a lil bit afraid and concerned for him as she knew her such kind of hesitance might have frustrated him.
He stepped inside, closing the door behind him. His movements were restless, his hands fidgeting as he struggled to find the right words. "Madhu, I... I need to tell you something. About earlier... when I called you Luna." Her brow furrowed, her feet stopped at the spot, she was unprepared for this situation to face off but she nodded, continued her steps softly towards him " I didn’t want to push you, Jungkook" she said gently trying to ease him at her best. "But if you’re ready, I’m here to listen."but still showed her interest in each and everything of him.
Her words softened his anxiety just a little, but the weight of the story still pressed on his chest. He sat down on the edge of bed beside her, leaning forward, his elbows resting on his knees. LUNA...on this a small painful smile crept on his face which made Madhu a lil bit confused. "Luna... she was someone I cared about deeply," he began, his voice low and heavy with emotion. "She wasn’t just anyone. She was...was my sister. My only sister. My best friend. She... she was everything to me.”
A tear slipped down his cheek, and Madhu’s heart clenched as she watched the pain etched into his features. She hadn’t seen him like this before—so raw, so vulnerable. She always thought he was the most jolly, flirty and dominant guy of their trio group but he seems to have pain deeply dubbed inside him which he suppresses very well unlike her. Her pains made her stone to everyone but he remained the same for everyone.
Madhu came out of her thoughts as Jungkook spoke further“She was beautiful,” he continued, his gaze distant, as if looking at a ghost. “Not just on the outside, but inside too. She had this light about her, this... innocence. But people couldn’t see past her skin.” Madhu’s throat tightened, understanding beginning to dawn on her.
“She went to this prestigious university,” Jungkook said, his voice trembling. “I was so proud of her. But... I didn’t realize what was happening to her there. They bullied her, Madhu. They made her feel like she didn’t belong—like she wasn’t enough—just because her skin was darker than theirs.” Madhu gasped softly, tears pooling in her eyes as she imagined the cruelty Luna must have endured.
“I didn’t take it seriously,” Jungkook admitted, his voice breaking completely now. “She told me once—just once—that it was hard. That they were mean to her. But I... I thought she was strong enough to handle it. I told her to ignore them. I told her to focus on her studies, to not let them win.” He clenched his fists, his knuckles turning white. “But she wasn’t okay. She was falling apart, and I didn’t see it. I didn’t... help her. And one day... one day she..." Jungkook's voice trembled as he continued, his gaze fixed on the floor, unable to meet Madhu's tearful eyes. His hands clenched tightly in his lap, knuckles white as he relived the worst night of his life.
"It was a normal evening," he began, his voice hoarse and broken. "She had been quiet the past few days, but I thought she was just stressed about exams. I should have known better. I should have seen it." He swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing as he fought back tears. Madhu was continuously caressing his back to keep him calm a lil as she has never seen him like this.
"That night, I came home late from work, as I was new in my dad's office as being the new boss..." he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "The house was dark, too quiet. I called out to her, but she didn’t answer. At first, I thought she’d gone to bed early. But then..." He stopped, his shoulders shaking as he took a deep, shuddering breath, she started caressing him more softly and went pulled her near to him more.
"I found her in her room," he continued, his voice cracking. "She was on the floor, so pale, so still. Empty pill bottles were scattered around her. There was....there was a note on her desk, but I didn’t even read it at first. I just dropped to my knees and held her, screaming her name, begging her to wake up."
His hands trembled as he relived the moment, he turned at her side but still facing the floor and started explaining her the moment with his painful expressions "Her body was so cold, Madhu. Her lips were blue, her face... peaceful, almost like she was sleeping. But she wasn’t. I could feel it. She was gone. I called for help, even though I knew it was too late. I—I couldn’t accept it. I held her until the paramedics came, but they couldn’t do anything. She was already gone. And it all happened because of that night...that ducking night..if I would have known that night will cost me so much I would have burned it from her life..."
Jungkook’s hands trembled in pain, fear and anger as he spoke, the weight of the memory pressing down on him. His voice, thick with regret, wavered as he recounted the night that still haunted him.
"It was prom night," he began, staring at his clasped hands. "She was so excited. She had saved up for months to buy this beautiful silver dress. She looked... radiant, like she belonged on a red carpet. I remember telling her how proud I was of her, how stunning she looked. She was nervous but hopeful, you know? She thought maybe that night would be different. That they’d see her for who she really was."
His jaw tightened, his voice dropping lower. "I was supposed to pick her up after the prom, but she told me to come later, said she wanted to enjoy herself for a bit. So, I waited. And then I got this... call. From a friend. They told me to come to the school immediately."
He paused, swallowing hard. "When I got there, I saw her outside, sitting alone on the steps. Her dress was soaked, ripped in places. Her makeup was smeared from crying. She wouldn't even look at me. She just kept saying, 'I'm sorry, Jungkook. I'm sorry I embarrassed you.'"
Madhu’s eyes widened, her heart breaking as she listened. "What happened?" she whispered. "They poured punch all over her," Jungkook said bitterly, his voice shaking with anger and shame. "They laughed at her, called her names, told her she didn’t deserve to be there because of her skin. One of them even tripped her on purpose in front of everyone. Her dress tore, and they just kept laughing. No one helped her. Not a single person." He clenched his fists, his knuckles white. "I should’ve been there, Madhu. I should’ve gone earlier. I should’ve protected her. But I wasn’t. She didn’t even tell me everything—they made her feel so small, so unwanted, and she just kept it inside." His voice cracked as he finished, his eyes glistening. "That night broke her. She never really recovered after that. And I... I failed her. I let her face that alone."
Madhu reached out, her heart aching for him, for Luna, for the injustice of it all. "Jungkook," she said softly, her voice trembling, "you didn’t fail her. They did. They failed her humanity. But you... you loved her. And that mattered more than anything."
But even as she spoke, Jungkook’s gaze remained distant, lost in the memory of a night he wished he could erase.
He finally looked up at Madhu, his eyes brimming with anguish. "I read her note later, after the chaos died down. She said she was sorry. That she didn’t want to hurt me, but she couldn’t bear it anymore. She wrote about the things they said to her, the names they called her, the way they made her feel like she didn’t deserve to exist. She blamed herself for being 'different,' for not being strong enough. But it wasn’t her fault, Madhu. It was mine. I should have protected her. I should have done more."
The room was silent except for the sound of Jungkook’s ragged breathing. He wiped his face roughly, as if trying to erase the memory, but it clung to him like a shadow. "After she died, I couldn’t stay in that house anymore. Every corner of it reminded me of her—her laughter, her smile, her voice. It was unbearable. I threw myself into work, into anything that would distract me. But no matter how far I ran, I couldn’t escape her. Or the guilt."
His voice dropped to a whisper, and his hands fell limp in his lap. "She was my baby sister, Madhu. The person I loved most in the world. And I let her down in the worst way possible. I couldn’t save her. And I’ve hated myself for it every single day since."
Madhu, unable to hold back any longer, pulled him in her embrace, squeezing him tightly. "Jungkook," she said softly, her voice thick with emotion. "You didn’t fail her. You loved her. And that love is still with you. It’s okay to feel this pain, but you don’t have to carry it alone anymore."
Her words pierced through the heavy fog of his grief, offering a glimmer of hope. For the first time in years, Jungkook allowed himself to believe that maybe, just maybe, he could begin to heal. Jungkook looked up at her braking the hug, his eyes glassy and full of tears. “I didn’t just lose her, Madhu. I lost everything. The man I was died that night, too. After Luna, I told myself I’d never let anyone in again. It felt too dangerous. Too painful. But then you… you showed up. And I don’t know why, but being near you feels like... like a chance I don’t deserve. Like a reminder of what I failed to do for her.”
Madhu froze, his confession stirring a deep ache in her chest. A memory she had buried surfaced again with cruel clarity, and she withdrew her hand slightly, her shoulders tensing as she tried to hold back her tears. “I… I understand, Jungkook,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “I know what it’s like to lose someone you gave your whole heart to. My first love… he wasn’t taken from me by fate, though. He chose to leave. He chose to betray me. And you know it very well” Her voice cracked, and she looked away, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. “I trusted him with everything. I thought he was my forever. But he lied. He broke me in ways I didn’t think were possible. When he walked away, it wasn’t just him leaving—it was like he tore my soul apart and took a piece with him. That night when he...he tried to assualt me, i killed him with my own hands...but i died too that time..i died tooo...”
Jungkook’s heart clenched as he watched her unravel. For the first time, he saw the depth of the pain she carried, the vulnerability beneath her quiet strength and the willingness to express it all on her own. Without hesitation, he moved closer, he was sensing that she was believing him slowly slowly, so he kneeled before her and gently took her hands in his, pulling her close.
“Madhu…” he murmured, his voice soft yet firm. “You didn’t deserve that. No one does. I can’t take that pain away, but I want you to know… you’re not alone anymore.”
Her walls, carefully constructed over years of hurt, began to crumble under the genuine care in his voice. A tear slipped down her cheek, and Jungkook reached up, brushing it away with a tenderness that made her heart ache even more. “We’ve both been hurt,” he said quietly, his dark eyes locked on hers. “We’ve both lost pieces of ourselves. But maybe… maybe together, we can find a way to heal.”
Madhu stared at him, the sincerity in his gaze breaking down her last defenses. She felt the warmth of his hands, the strength and reassurance in his touch, and for the first time in a long time, she allowed herself to lean into someone’s comfort. Jungkook pulled her into a gentle embrace, his arms strong and steady around her trembling frame. The unsteady rhythm of his heartbeat as he also broke, against her ear grounded her, and her breathing began to slow.
As the night wore on, exhaustion from their shared confessions and emotional release overtook them both. Madhu, cradled in Jungkook’s embrace, let her eyes flutter shut, her heart heavy yet oddly lighter at the same time. Jungkook leaned back slightly, holding her securely as he rested his cheek against her hair.
Sleep claimed them both, cocooned in each other’s warmth. For the first time in years, neither of them felt alone. Under the quiet glow of the bedside lamp, two broken souls found an unspoken promise of healing in each other’s arms.
