Old Friends

As the headmaster of a school, Ozpin shouldn't be out for too long. Leaving your post means leaving your domain vulnerable. It wasn't much of a matter since Glynda is the headmistress. The woman had a great love for her students.

The crunching leaves underfoot were enough to give anyone around the recognition of his arrival. His silver hair was a show of time passing once more, mistakes made and remembered, his friends coming and going.

Ozpin took the time to make his way at the home of a friend he has taught in his times in Beacon. It was the same as he remembered. A simple home in the Cliffside Forrest, quiet and humble.

The last time he came here, the place was a forest of magical herbs he simply remembered from long ago, flowers from lands he visited in his past lives grew on the ground as they have always been there. It was full of magical life.

The sound of wood being chopped from somewhere in the place came to his attention. Ozpin was glad that someone was home.

But like the last time he came here, he didn't bring good news to any of the residents. The last time he was here was to tell the news of Summer Rose dying.

It has been decades since then but time goes slowly for people like him. Just the same as the people in this family. Perhaps it was only fitting he visited. The bearing of keeping so many secrets can take a toll on him.

He struck knocks on the wooden door of the home, calling for the attention of a middle-aged blond man, chopping down wood to stack them. The man turned to face his visitor but the headmaster was unable to fathom if Taiyang took his visit ominous or otherwise.

From the look on his face, he was debating about it.

"What brings you here?" Taiyang asked, finishing the stacking of wood on the pile.

Ozpin gave him a small smile, pained to hear such dislike in his voice. "I came to visit. A check up on you. Perhaps Qrow."

On top of a tree branch, a crow flew off only to land as Qrow, dressed down for the day. "Oz, your visits this century seem to be bad ones. I'm not hoping for good news."

Tai dusted himself off before he opened his home's door. "Come in. It's time for lunch." Ozpin entered the home, Qrow behind him.

It's been a while since someone visited the house but everything was kept clean and orderly. Picture frames lined up on top the hearth with the wall lined with weapons and trophies. Wooden furniture, floors, and walls made the home feel rustic. Not a speck of silver was around but gold treasures were subtle around the place. An ornament on the coffee table, a trinket on the window. No one would guess that it was home to many kinds of beings.

A simple home built so charmingly by people to house a family. Ozpin admired such a place.

Taiyang brought out a few things to make coffee while Qrow brought out snacks and chips from the pantry. Seeing them both work around the house will give you a different image that what they are at work. It was a refreshing sight, like brothers helping each other.

"Have you heard from the girls? I heard from Ruby she met a Schnee." Qrow asked as he placed snacks on the dining table.

Ozpin took a seat, holstering his weapon at his hip. "She did. They make a great team." He answered, reaching for pastry.

"Huh, that's an odd thing to say. I'm glad my niece is doing fine." Qrow replied as he brought them mugs. Taiyang brought the coffee and poured them some, the men helping themselves mix their drink.

"How about Yang? Are they doing alright?" Tai inquired, not just asking for his daughter but her lover as well. After all, those two had grown up together.

Ozpin took a sip of his drink before answering. "They're going doing well. They're training and improving faster than anyone in Beacon."

These two grown men ask for their wards' wellbeing like loving guardians. How he wished that Weiss Schnee could experience such things for herself. A proper family that would care to know about you when they can.

"But, when Ruby called recently...she said they were all in a team. is that a good idea? To put all four of them together?" Tai asked, looking down at his mug with his brows knit with concern.

Qrow took a sip of his drink. "The Schnee girl should be a human right? Will they all be alright with that balance?"

Ozpin had seen the girls train and fight. Weiss Schnee was not inferior to her teammates. She is just as strong as the rest of them. "Miss Schnee is no way inferior to your girls. They all have magic running in their veins, all strong."

This put relief to Qrow and Tai who have been busy with work the recent times. Both of them intended to visit Beacon for the festival just to see how the girls and the academy have been doing.

"Have you seen her power first hand?" Qrow asked. Ozpin simply took a sip from his mug. No, he hasn't. Why would the girl use her powers in school where many were watching? Aside from reports, schoolwork, and asking for special permissions, even Ozpin was kept in the dark of the girl's abilities.

They were all very careful. They all have magic but they have a great way of hiding how they use it in school. It was impressive enough for Blake Belladonna and Tai's girl how they keep their magic which can easily go out of hand, Ruby's thirst and magic from her being a hybrid was also well kept. They were a band of tight-knit friends.

"If they're all magic users, won't it be dangerous to keep them together like that?" Taiyang inquired, growing more concerned over them.

The headmaster looked up at both of them, recalling just how much trouble they all attracted when they were just as young. "Your team survived Beacon with just as much trouble. Give them credit. Those four girls will be alright."

Tai huffed a chuckle. "Yeah, I remember that. Although, I do recall giving you trouble for that one time I turned and a whole village saw. All because of a flock of Nevermore."

Qrow laughed. "That was funny. The whole school was buzzing about it but good ol' Oz fixed it up."

Ozpin had a chuckle himself as he finished his first cup of coffee. "Indeed."

Tai turned to Ozpin with his smile from fond memories turning to a smile of concern once more. "They have to deal with that kind of problem too. What if they have no one else to help them like what you did? They will have to fight to keep peaceful lives."

Ozpin can see his point clearly but it wasn't as if he can have control over what the girls would do. He can only try to help.

"As long as I can, I will help." He assured them both. His words rang out like an echo from his past. How many times has he made such a promise? are they just as empty as the other ones?

Qrow leaned back in his seat, putting his mug down. "Oz, I don't trust your promises anymore. I just need you to try. If those girls are what you make of them, they will have ways to fend for themselves."

Ozpin nodded in agreement. Tai raised his head to look up at Oz and Qrow. "We can all help and hope."

"But they're not the only kids who've got magic in their blood there in Beacon, right?" Qrow inquired, looking up at them. "Let's be honest, Ozpin. You think I don't see you bringing in more fae blooded kids?"

Taiyang looked up at Oz, now thinking twice about trusting the man to keep an eye out for his kids and the other girls in the team. "What do you mean?"

Ozpin shifted uncomfortably in his seat. If Qrow knew about this, a few immortals are lurking in his school it seems. Perhaps even other kinds. He knows there are specially admitted ones that he has yet to meet closely but he didn't deny it.

"What do you need them for? A handful is enough but I heard a little sparrow that you specifically gave them 'scholarships'." Qrow quoted.

Ozpin shook his head. "You heard wrong. I have indeed seen a few students who are fae blooded but not a lot are as strong as Team RWBY. Perhaps Phyra Nikkos and a few other ones but I did not recruit them. A lot seemed to have flocked in Vale."

Qrow frowned. "That's...an odd way to say it." He slumped, crossing his legs as he thought through it.

Ozpin looked down at his empty coffee mug. "Something's coming this way and I'm afraid I can't protect Beacon on my own." He looked up at Tai and Qrow. "I didn't just come here to give you updates on the girls."

Tai stood from the table to get more coffee, unable to think about just what this old geezer will want. He simply focused on boiling more water and brewing more coffee as he listened to him. Qrow stayed in his seat, guessing what Ozpin wants.

"Qrow, I want you to teach in Beacon. You have a background in teaching and you know more than the professors in Beacon." Ozpin pointed out. "I heard you quit in Signal."

Qrow sighed. "I knew it."

Taiyang went back to the table to pour them more coffee. "You want him to teach?" He asked Ozpin, unable to comprehend just what the man was thinking.

The headmaster nodded, stirring his mug as he waited for any of them to ask anything regarding the matter. Tai looked at Qrow who seems to be thinking it over. "You're considering it?"

"What? The girls are there, I have nothing else to do but missions and you're fine here! You're even teaching in Signal!" Qrow pointed out.

"Who's gonna take care of the dog?" Tai asked. Qrow looked at him in disbelief.

"I thought you already sent Zwei to Ruby last week?" He asked. "Even if he stays here, he'll be fine. That dog isn't normal. He'll probably find a way to head to Beacon."

Ozpin simply sipped his coffee and watched as the two talked and discussed the matter. Qrow looked like he wanted to teach but Tai wants him to stay put. Just a while ago, these two were as tranquil as undisturbed waters.

The man was patiently waiting for them to stop bickering as it seemed like Qrow was going to agree to his offer. The headmaster's scroll buzzed and rang from a call. He quickly pulled it out and put it on loudspeaker for all of them to hear. It was Glynda.

"Ozpin, you need to know something."

Ozpin listened to Glynda. By the time the headmistress explained the situation, Qrow and Tai have called the girls from their missions.

Something was about to go wrong in Beacon.
