Mama
1978, Chamberlain, Maine.
The Home Of Carrie White
June Third
Carrie was confused about this whole ordeal. She did like Tommy, but she now realized that Sue loved him. Loved him enough to make a whole new life, growing in her belly.
Carrie was afraid to go home that night. She was afraid to tell mama that she was a godmother; that she had fraternized with a sinful woman like Sue. But Sue was at her side. She could help.
Carrie stepped in the front door. "Mama?" She called. "I'm home." Carrie looked around. No one was answering.
Then Sue saw the huge crack in the closet door. "Whoa. Might want to get that replaced." She said. Carrie gasped. That's where she had locked mama up.
"Mama! Where are you!?" She called.
"What's wrong?" Sue asked calmly.
At the sound of Sue's voice, Carrie's mother appeared at the top of the stairs. "How dare you." She whispered.
"Mama, I-"
"You bathe yourself in sin, and then bring it back into this house." She pointed at Sue, shocking her a little bit. "That girl has the devil's child in her womb."
Sue touched her stomach. "How did you know?"
"I had the same look in my eyes when he... infected me. Infected me with her." She pointed to Carrie. "I was scared. I knew it was a curse, a punishment for being so weak." She spat out the "weak" with venomous hate.
Sue touched her stomach in nervousness this time, as if she was protecting whatever was inside of her. But then she thought; did she really want to? Did she really want the burden of a child, and at such a young age. "What did I do wrong?" She whispered. She didn't realize she said it out loud first.
"You were weak, just like me. You made a horrible, sinful mistake. But I have learned; a sin like this, it can be redeemed." Sue nearly felt compelled to listen. She knew it was the ramblings of a mad woman, she knew she couldn't understand. But redemption for this... sin, as it was called, seemed right at the moment. Carrie noticed that her new friend may have been buying into the ramblings of her mother, and tried to speak up.
"Mama, I wanted to tell you-"
"Carrie, do not speak to me right now. You are just as bad as her. If neither of you redeem your sins, then you're both going to hell." Sue looked at Carrie was a mix of intense confusion and fear. In an instant, she hated Carrie again. She hated her freaky mother, and she hated her freaky classmate. Going around, telling everyone that they were going to hell. Just like always.
But Sue hated that Carrie. The prudish one, who prayed at lunch and said they were going to hell. The Carrie she saw, she met tonight, she loved that Carrie. The Carrie that was a normal girl, just like her. The godmother of her child.
So she did the right thing again, for Carrie.
"Carrie hasn't done anything wrong." She said. Both Carrie and her mother stared at her. Her mother mostly angry, and Carrie incredibly confused and surprised. "Neither have I. I'm not like you, Ms. White. I did make a mistake, but it wasn't a sin." This time, she hugged her stomach, as a motherly, protective gesture. "And this child isn't a sin, either. It's not a punishment, it's a gift. It proves just how much I love Tommy."
"Tommy?" Oh no. She had brought the father into the situation. And if there's one thing Carrie's mother hated, it was men. "You may love that boy, but he doesn't love you. He infected you with this curse, like her father infected me!" She pointed to Carrie. "He infected me with the devil's child! A witch! And that thing in your womb- it will grow to be the devil's child in time!"
Sue looked to Carrie. "Witch?" She asked. "Carrie, what does she mean?"
"I always meant to do this." Her mother said. "I meant to do it at birth, but I was too weak. I asked God, 'Please, God. Let me keep my little girl for a little while longer.'" Her mother finally moved her hand from behind her back, revealing a knife. Carrie and Sue stepped back in horror.
"This... will save you both. Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live, Carrie." She looked between two things, Carrie's eyes, and Sue's belly. They realized what was going on. Sue screamed.
Something burned in Carrie's eyes. A near literal flame was kindled in her stomach. "Mama, stop." She said plainly. Her mother slowly descended down the stairs, as Sue fell backwards and stared to crawl backwards.
"Mama, stop."
Her mother raised a knife to her daughter's eye, but Carrie stopped her. Her arm froze in place. Sue noticed, and sat up a little. Suddenly, every sharp object in the house was floating, pointed towards her mother. Sue slapped a hand to her mouth to keep from screaming.
"Mama, this is your last chance. Drop the knife."
When she didn't, she and Carrie battled for control of the arm. Carrie held her ground. Her mind burned with power, she felt like every cell had been set on fire. With one mighty, agonizing scream, she forced her mother back, and the knives into her chest.
Sue, after seeing the whole ordeal, fainted.
