Godmother

The Home Of Susan Snell

June Third

Sue sat laughing with Carrie on the bed. Carrie had wanted to blot her makeup, so she was using a tampon to blot her lipstick, but Sue told her that it wasn't for that was for. Carrie then threw the tampon at her, causing Sue to laugh. After a few seconds, Carrie did too. It felt so nice to finally have a friend.

"I need to go to the bathroom, okay?" Sue said, letting her laughter fade. Sue looked in the bathroom mirror, looking at her stomach. "Hey Carrie?" She asked. Carrie leaned into the door. "Do you think I've put on weight?" She asked. Sue stepped out of the bathroom and showed Carrie her stomach. "I mean, it doesn't make sense. I've been sick lately, so shouldn't I be loosing weight?" She asked.

"Hm." Carrie started thinking. Oddly enough, she felt an odd presence in Sue. She reached out to her stomach, and her mind did so much more than flex. It burned. It burned, spurring from the spark that Carrie saw in Sue's stomach. Carrie's hand jerked back.

"What- what's wrong?" Sue said, holding her stomach.

Carrie gave a tiny, breathy laugh. "It's okay, you can kick, sweetie." She said.

"Did you just call me-" Sue was cut off by an odd feeling in her stomach. Something kicked her. "What the-" Then her eyes went wide. "Oh. That's why my period was late." She started to wobble on her feet. "I think I need to sit down." She looked pale and faint. Carrie helped her to sit down.

"Do you know who the father is?" She asked. Carrie couldn't imagine that Sue would be a teen mom, but then again, her mother would. Would have said something like, of course that wh*re would get herself pregnant. Maybe Sue was lucky though, maybe she was still pure, like Mary when she had Jesus. Sue was actually really nice, maybe that was the case? Wouldn't that be nice, for Jesus to be reborn and punish the sinners, like Mama said he would. And she and Sue, and Tommy would be just fine. And then Mama would see that Carrie and the kids at school weren't all bad.

"I can only assume it's Tommy. He's my first." She said.

"Oh." Carrie was disappointed. I really liked Tommy... She thought. She had hoped that someday Tommy would like her instead of Sue, but now that he was a father, he couldn't.

"I'm sorry Carrie." Sue said. Carrie was caught off-guard. " I know you like Tommy. I saw that look in his eye. He was conflicted." She said. "I think, even just for a moment, he loved both of us. He just didn't know which one he loved more."

"You!" Carrie said. "He has to love you! He's nice, so he wouldn't abandon you like this."

Sue smiled. She looked really pretty, especially when she smiled. "I'm sorry for being so awful to you." She said. "I don't know why I was."

Carrie stopped Sue in her tracks by putting a hand on Sue's stomach. She smiled. "It's a girl." She smiled.

"How do you know?" Sue asked with a bit of a giggle.

"Uhh...." Carrie wasn't telling the truth. She wouldn't dare tell Sue about her powers, or how she actually felt a presence in Sue. "It's a superstition. If the baby kicks when you ask, it's probably a girl."

"What?"

"I don't know."

Both girls laughed and smiled to each other. "Carrie?" She said. "My mom said that a godmother is someone who promises to take charge of the kid's religious education. If that's the case, then..." She took a deep breath. "Would... would you be her godmother?"

Carrie fell back in shock. Sue bent over to grab her before she fell. "Whoa! You okay!? Sorry, that was a little-"

"Yes! Sue, I'd love to!" Carrie said, still dangling off the side of Sue's bed.

"Thanks, Carrie." Carrie then slid out of her hands and banged her head on the floor. "Sorry." She said.

Carrie smiled. "It's okay, Sue."
