Best Enemies
Carrie and Chris stood alone in the classroom, staring at each other. The blood was still dripping from the roof. A drop landed on Chris's hand.
"How?" Chris asked. It was all she said.
"I don't know. I never have known." She said. "Do you remember how those girls said I killed my mother?"
"You knew I was there?"
"Yeah. I could sense you." She said. "They were right. I killed my mother." Chris leaned back. "In self-defense. I used... this power."
"I'm sorry."
"Don't be. She deserved it."
They were silent for a little while. "I'm sorry." Chris said.
"I said you didn't have to be."
"Not for your mom. For... being a b*tch."
"You're not the only one, Chris." Carrie sighed. "This would have happened, tampon throwing incident or not."
"I tried to dump blood on you at the prom." That brought back memories for both of them. To this day, they could still hear the drip-drip-dripping of blood on the stage.
"And what would have happened if you succeeded? Make me snap? Make me kill you?" Chris leaned back in fear. "No. This was the best possible outcome."
"It's a pretty bad outcome, though."
"Well, I prefer this to what might have happened." Carrie said. She sighed, and grabbed her backpack.
"Where are you going?"
"Home."
"Where is that?"
Carrie sighed. "I don't know. I'll find something. I just have to get out of this stupid school."
"Finally, we agree on something." Something about that made both Chris and Carrie giggle.
"You're not a bad person, Chris. You're not perfect, but then again, no one is." Carrie stopped. "Not even Sue."
Chris didn't say anything. She didn't want to admit how long she had been waiting to hear that. That Sue wasn't perfect.
"So... if your mom is dead, then... where are you living?" Chris asked.
Carrie shrugged. "Group home. They're nice and all, but I want to get out of this town."
"You're not the only one." Chris said. "After all the sh*t I did, I kind of want to run away from my reputation."
"Don't say that. Unlike me, you still have a little bit left. You have your dad. You have your house. And you have friends, no matter what you've done to get rid of them." Carrie said. "Talk to Sue. Try and make up with her. It'll be worth it." She looked down. "Because I'm going somewhere where this stupid power can't follow. Or at least what I've done with it."
"Where are you going to go?" Asked Chris.
Carrie shrugged. "I don't know. I heard I have a sister somewhere. I think her name was Rachel. Either way, maybe I can get to know her."
"You're really leaving?" Chris asked. Carrie nodded. Chris chuckled softly, staring at her lap. "It's funny, really. Before, all I wanted was for you to go away. I kind of expected that; in a situation like this, I would want you to stay, but..." She looked up. "I don't. I want you to go away forever. Does that make me a bad person?"
Carrie shook her head. "No, it makes you human. It makes you flawed. Like me. Like Sue. Like everyone." She chuckled. "No matter what happens to us, no matter how much we change, we can't cover up our flaws. I can never be TOTALLY normal; I'm stuck with this power. And you can never be TOTALLY be kind; you have, and will do, some awful things. But my power doesn't define me, and your actions don't define you."
"I never thought I would ever hear you speak, and actually believe it." Chris chuckled.
Carrie laughed. "First time for everything I guess." They stared at each other for a second, before Carrie started to leave. "Chris?" She said before leaving. She turned around and smiled. "You were the best enemy a girl could have."
Chris smiled. "So were you."
And then, Carrie left. She didn't come to school the next day, or the day after. Sue asked around at the group home, and found out that Carrie had been adopted. She was living in Seattle with her adopted family. Did she ever meet that sister of hers? No one knew. They didn't know if she was happy, depressed, old or new styled, all they knew was that Carrie White was finally gone. They only knew one thing; Carrie reveled in her confidence. What she chose to do with that was beyond them. And Carrie, for the first time in her life, accepted herself. Powers and all.
Meanwhile, Chris went back to... being Chris. But with a few changes. She was still a bitch, but not the kind she was before. She was snarky, sarcastic, and sometimes threw out a mean name, but she didn't do anything like throw tampons or drop blood. Because she learned something. She knew that she could never be a totally kind person, because she was Chris. She lost that a long time ago. But she also knew that people cared about her. Her dad, Sue, they were all banking on her being at least somewhat of a better person. So she gave them that. But she never gave up her flaws. The flaws that made her a bitch.
Because she was Chris Hargensen, and she wasn't perfect.
And it was only when she, and everyone acknowledged that, that the blood at the prom finally stopped dripping.
