"Virginia and Samira I should warn you.We keep a, uh, rigorous pace in AP English. The AP students take this very seriously. So if my class proves to be too much I suggest you both move down to regular English.,OK. I'd hate to see you girls bite off more than you can chew." The balding English teacher says speaking to the both of them and Samira grimaces at his breath which smelled like sardines.
"Uh we cover all greats. Steinback,Salinger,Miller,Homer,Fitzgerald,Shakespear of course. There's 16 books in total okay?" He says continuing on as Samira breathes for fresh sardine free air. "It's Ginny" Ginny says walking off along with Sammy. The two girls sit down and Samira rolls her eyes. "It's like we're living in a Crest commercial" she says under her breath and Ginny laughs making her smile.
Maybe she didn't hate her
"I'm sorry for being rude to you yesterday. I was mad at my mom and I took it out on you. Can we start over? My names Ginny" She says extending her arm out and Samira smiles accepting the handshake. "Samira but you can call me Sammy" she says smiling and Ginny does the same as the teacher gets the classes attention.
"Welcome back AP English! Hiding in the back there you'll find our two new students Virginia and Samira Miller. I trust you will make them feel welcome." he says and Samira rolls her eyes. "It's Ginny. Her name is Ginny." she says speaking up which he ignores. "Now I know it's our first day back from summer vacation, but I thought it was an excellent opportunity for a pop quiz. Those of you who haven't read the summer reading The Crucible are in a world of pain" He says and his eyes land on the two girls, one who had been reading over the list infuriated.
"Don't worry Virginia and Samira. I don't expect you to have read it" he says and Samira nudges Ginny to look at the reading list. She looks over it recognizing all the book and her eyes go into a distasteful look. She raises her hand and the teacher looks towards them. "Oh yes? You have a question?" he says and Ginny smiles fakely. "There are 16 books on this syllabus-Yes! Like I said you can always drop down" he says overly excited and Samira side eyes him. "Fourteen of them were written by men." Ginny says and Samira interjects. "Fifteen by white people overall" she says helping ginny and Ginny finishes it off with "And I guess the one black author crops up for black history month. Am I right?" she says deadpanning him. "Excuse me?" he says looking outraged by their statements.
"We're very serious about our education,Mr Gitten" Ginny says shrugging. "We're just worried I might internalize an ideology that the main viewpoint, the viewpoint worth studying in class, the viewpoint of the greats, is only that off the white male, thus eradicating my voice as immaterial" she says feigning a look of innocence knowing she touched a nerve.
"And finally we're both worried we won't be stimulated intellectually. Also I have read the crucible and i'm confident I can take the quiz today-Same" Samira says agreeing with Ginny making Mr.Gitten turn more red. "Are you finished Virginia and Samira?" he says fuming and Ginny shakes her head placing it on the table."No.Please call me Ginny" she says smiling and he lets out a mad sigh. "Well, I don't know how things we're done at your last school,Ginny, but here we don't tolerate political outbursts and grand standings at the expense of your peers class time. Same goes for you Samira." he says and Samira squints. "It wasn't an outburst because you technically called on her and then she said her statement Mr.Gittten. An outburst is-I know what an outburst is!" he says frustratedly and this girl with a neon pink jacket raises her hand.
"Yes Maxine?" he says flustered and Max smiles at the two girls. "Hi.I'm like also super concerned about my subconscious digestion of the superiority of the white male perspective and also can I go to the nurse I have period cramps" she says flashing him a smiles and Mr.Gitten lets out a sigh making him look like an angry cartoon character. "Okay thats it. For the rest of the class we will be silent and take the pop quiz" He says as Maxine gives the two girls a handclap which Samira smiles at.
Samira got her laptop out of her locker slamming it to be met with the boy from yesterday. She jumps again and he smiles. "Can I get that number now?" he says and she looks down at his shirt. "It's Monday" she says looking up at him. "What kind of cultural wasteland are you from? You've never heard of the band 'Wednesday'? He asks peering at her. "Chicago, And nope and i'm not planning to either" she says giving him a fake smile. "You're right. I just made them up. Grabbed the first shirt I saw this morning" he says clicking his tongue and she smiles. "Pass me your phone" she says and he grabs it out of his pocket unlocking it. She inputs her contact info and passes it back to him. "Be gone Marcus" a voice says from behind her and she turns around to see Ginny and Maxine coming up to her and Marcus.
"See you around neighbor" he says walking away and Maxine leans against the locker. "Sorry about Marcus. He's an asshole" she says smiling and Samira nods. "Yeah. He's my twin brother" she says and Samira pannicks. "Oh shit. I didn't mean-No i'm sorry. I should've strangled him with my umbilical in the womb and done humanity a solid" Max says interrupting her and Samira laughs a little. "I like you" she says nodding her a head a little and Max brightly smiles. "Same" she says extending the last vowel as she leads her and ginny as she talks about random shit. She follows along with their conversation when she feels a buzz in her pocket. She takes it out and immediately smiles at the message
